Be it known that I, HARMON P. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Stencil-Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing machines wherein the printing characters are borne by stencils and has particular reference to a hand operated stencil printing machine.
For lmany purposes, it is desirable to duplicate the printing or make multiple imprints of certain characters, as a name and address, upon separate portions of the same sheet or upon diderent sheets.A Various bills for instance, require a name and address to be printed upon a detachable portion or stub of the bill sheet and also the same name and address upon the main body of the bill sheet.
This invention relates to and has as an object to provide a stencil printing machine, and particularly a hand operated stencil printing machine, with means whereby the machine may be operated to make a single impression from each stencil and also a plurality of impressions from a single stencil. I
It is a further object to provide means associated with a hand operated stencil printing machine, and as an attachment therefor, to enable the repeated printing of the characters borne by a single stencil.
In carrying out the invention, means are or may be provided to move the stencils and the sheets to be printed upon simultaneously while recording on the sheets the impression ot the characters borne by the stencils; and means to cause a selected stencil, or all of the stencils, in succession, to be returned to the initial printing position for a second printing of the impression carried by the stencil. Means may be provided whereby the stencil may be returned to its 1n1t1al printing position while the sheet to be printed upon is held without movement whereby the same characters may be multiplied on the same sheet by successive operations of the machine.
A further object is generally to improve 4the construction and operation of lstencil printing machines and particularly hand operated stencil printing machlnes. l

As here shown, the hand operated stencil printing machine embodying the invention comprises a base l() which is adapted to rest upon a table or other suitable support. Said base 10 is formed with a Hat top 11 which forms a table or bed adapted to support the work sheets, as envelopes, bills, and the like t0 be printed.
The type of stencil more particularly adapted for use in this machine is shown most clearly in Fig. 5 and comprises a relatively stiff frame 12 having a. window therein occupied by a stencil sheet 13, whlch sheet is adapted to bear the characters to be imprinted. Said stencil sheet 12 is disposed to lie entirely within the opposite faces of the frame 12 as is indicated more clearly in Fig. 6, although the particular form of stencil is not of especial importance so far as this invention is concerned.
The stencils are adapted to be moved above the bed 11 in parallel and spaced tracks 14 and 15 which tracks are formed or provided with grooves 16 in their opposed parallel fa'ces, in which grooves the stencils are adapted to slide freely. A superimposed pile of stencils are adapted to be supported in position to be introduced one at a time into one endA of the Stencil track whereby to be moved along said track for the printing of the impressions carried by them. The stencils are contained in a stencil holder carried by and disposed at one end of the stencil track.
The stencil holder may comprise the channelled end- plates 18 and 19, which plates may be secured to the stencil tracks 14 and 15 by suitable means as screws 20, and said stencil holder thereby serves to provide a rigid support for the tracks.
A supporting bracket 21 may be secured to the base 10 of the machine at one side thereof, and extend upwardly and over the bed 11 of said base and be secured to one of said tracks as the track 15 whereby to support the track and the stencil holder in elevated position above and spaced from said bed 1l. A superimposed pile of stencils is adapted to be supported freely within said stencil holder and in such position that the lowermost stencil of the pile may be transferred from the pile into and moved along the track into a printing position.
The printed stencils are adapted to be discharged from the track into a stencil receiver 23, which receiver is pivotally connected dependently with the ends of said tracks 14 and 15 as by means of a bracket 24; and said stencil receiver may be swung upwardly into an inverted position above said tracks and bracket as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, when the machine is not in use.
The printing mechanism includes two superimposed stencil driving and printing sectors 25 and 26, which sectors are approximately semicircular in shape and the faces thereof may be covered with a relatively yielding material as rubber, for instance.
The lower sector is fixed to an operating shaft 27 and said sector may extend through an aperture 28 in the bed 11 of the base 10.

Said operating shaft 27 is journalled in a lever support 29, which support is pivoted at 30 t0 the base 10. The other end of said lever support is engaged by a compression spring 31 whereby yieldingly to maintain the rinting sector 26 in printing relation with the stencils in the stencil tracks and also with the work to be printed upon and permit said sector to yield downwardly whereby to compensate for various thicknesses of the work. Said operating shaft 27 is extended freely through a vertically elongated aperture 83 in the base 10 and a gear 34 is fixed to the outer end thereof. The upper sector 25 is fixed to an operating shaft 35 and said-shaft. is supported in the spaced arms 36 and 37 of a bracket 38, which bracket is secured to the base 10. A gear 39 is fixed to the end of said shaft and meshes with the gear 34 and is of equal pitch diameter therewith whereby both sectors may be rota-ted at the same peripheral speed.
An arm 40 is fixed to said gear 39 to provide means by which the printing sectors Said arm is provided `with a detachable connection with the operating handle 41. Said operating handle is carried loosely on the extended end of the upper shaft 35 beyond said arm 41. Said handle is provided with an intermediate cylindrical portion 43, which portion may form a crank arm, vand a spring-pressed pin 44 is slidably received within said, cylindrical portion 43. Said pin is adapted to enter a recess in the end of said arm 40 whereby to lock said f arm and handle releasingly for conjoint rotation. Said arm may be released from said handle by moving said pin 44 toward the right, Fig. whereby to remove the end of said pin from position within the recess in said arm 40 and the handle may then be rotated independently of said sectors whereby the stencils may bc fed between said sectors without. being printed therefrom and for a purpose with which this invention is not concerned.
A pivoted latch 46 is secured to the bracket 38 and is adapted to support said arm 40 against counter-clockwise rotation; yet said latch is constructed and arranged, in an obvious manner, to permit the arm to rotate in a clockwise direction.
Stencils are adapted to be fed successively from the pile of stencils in the stencil receiver and delivered into the 'stencil tracks in a position to be engaged by the printing sectors by suitable nicans including the pusher 50. Said pusher is arranged to be reciprocated within the slots in the tracks 14 and 15 and to engage the lowermost stencil of the pile and move it from its position under the pile of stencils and into such position in the track that it may be engaged by the sectors 25 and 26, as said sectors are rotated, which sectors are arranged Yto move the stencils further along the track while 53, whereby to permit the pusher 50 to end portion of the connecting rod.

The initial position of the sheet vto be printed upon may be lixed by a side guide 60, which guide may have a slot 61 therein through which a clamping screw 62 is adjustably received; and said screw may be screw-threaded removably in any one of a series of aligned and spaced apertures'63 in said bed 11. The sheet may be positioned relative to the stencil track by the top guide 65, which guide is or may be slidable in grooves 66 contained in the bed 11. A clamping bar 68 may be secured to Said guide and extended over one of the stencil tracks as the track 15. A resilient clamping member 69 may extend over said guide bar 68 and a clamp screw 70 may serve to clamp said guide bar 68 releasingly to the stencil track 16 in adjusted positions of said bar whereby to maintain said top guide in adjusted positions thereof.
The surface of the upper sector may be maintained in inked condition by suitable means as the ink roll 7 3. Said roll is supported in position above said uppersector 25 by the bracket 38 and is rotatable in said bracket. Said ink roll may be raised free from or lowered into engaging position with said sector 25 by a suitable means as an eccentric bushing 74, which bushing is rotatably mounted in said bracket 38 and is arranged eccentrically'to support the ink roll 73. Said bushing is provided with a handle by whichl the bushing may be rotated to raise or lower the ink roll.
Ink may be contained in ink reservoir 77, which reservoir is pivotally supported by the stencil receiver. A toothed ink wheel 78 is rotatably mounted within said ink reservoir, and with the periphery thereof immersed in the ink. transfer roll 80, which preferably is of felt or other absorbent material, 'is disposed above said ink reservoir and is adapted to be held yieldingly against and in rolling engagement with the ink roll 73 whereby to be rotated as the printing sector 25 rotates said ink roll. Ink may be applied to the transfer roll by moving said ink roll upwardly, whereby to cause the ink wheel 78 to engage and roll in engagement with said transfer roll. Saidtransfer roll is rotatably supported by a bracket 83, which bracket is pivotally supported on the upper operating shaft 35. A spring 84 connected between said bracket 83 and the fixed bracket 38 serves to maintain said transfer roll 80 yieldingly in engagement with the ink roll 7 3.
A protectivecover 86 may be pivoted to lthe stencil track and extended upwardly and over said ink roll 73 and transfer roll '83 whereby to enclose both and protect the surfaces thereof from accumulation of dust. Said cover may be moved about its pivot toward the left, Fig. 1, whereby to expose said rolls for inspection.
In accordance with this invention means in addition to the construction above set forth are provided to cause the stencils or any selected stencil to be returned repeatedly at will, into a position to be re-engaged by the sectors 25 and 26 whereby-to provide for making multiple imprints of the impressions borne by the stencils. Said stencil retriever is adapted to be associated detachably with one of the stencil tracks as track 14 and to be slidable thereon in response to movements of the stencils within the tracks and also in response to a retractileimeans as a spring. Said stencil receiver includes the ysuperposed and spaced upper and lower arms 9() and 91 which are preferably integral with the end connecting and separating portion 92. Said arms 90 and 91 are adapted to be disposed on opposite sides of the stencil track 14 and slide freely there-1 along in engagement therewith.
Said end connecting and separating portion 92 is provided with an upwardly reliexed shoulder portion 93 or is otherwise arranged to guide said retriever for movements along said track and prevent unintentional detachment therefrom; and said end connect-ing and separating portion 92 may be shaped to provide resiliency to said arms 90 and 91. Said arms, however, are adapted to be sufficiently resilient to permit said member to be applied to or detached from the track.
rlhe free ends of said arms 90 and 91 are adapted to extend inwardly beyond the inner face of the stencil track 14 and said arms are refiexed toward each other as at 90a and 91a. Said reflexed end portions 90a and 91* are adapted frictionally to engage yieldingly with the frames 12 of the stencil as they are moved along the track. Said stencil re- Meanies triever is formed or provided with an upwardly extended arm 95, which arm has a slot 96 therein in which one end of a retractile spring 97 is detachably received.
Said retractile spring is extended along and disposed above said track 14 and the other end of said spring is secured detachably in a slot 98 of a support 99, which support may be secured preferably removably to the stencil holder by suitable means as the screw 100. A forward stop member as the screw 101 is secured to the stencil track 14 in the path of forward movement of said stencil retriever whereby to limit the extent of such movement; .and the stencil holder is adapted to form a rear stop-member which .the friction between the stencils and the stencil retriever serves to move said retriever along the track into a position against said stop member 101 and said retriever will be held in said position inaslnuch as stencils are normally prevented from moving backward in the track either by being engaged by said sectors 25 and 26 or -by the pusher 50. lVhen the stencil retriever is in its forward position and the pusher is at the inner end of its stroke, and the sectors 25 and 26 are separated, the arrangement is such that said retriever engages but one stencil, and there is but one stencil disposed in the track between said retriever and the stencil holder.
Said stencil retriever is brought into action to cause the repeated printing of the characters borne by any selected stencil in combination with the means providing for disconnecting the connecting rod 52 from operative engagement with the operating handle 41. The operation of the device is or may be substantially as follows:
Normally the connecting rod 52 is arranged in operative connection with the handle 41 as indicated more particularly in Fig. 8, which figure illustrates the relative position of the handle and connecting rod with the driving sectors in spaced relation or as shown in Fig. 9 and with the pusher at the inner end of-its stroke and beneath the pile of superimposed stencils in the stencil receiver.
As thus arranged, each complete rotation of the handle will cause a stencil to be fed from the stencil receiver and delivered to the sectors 25 and 26 and impressions recorded from said stencils in the usual manner.
The stencil retriever will occupy a position against its stop member 101 as shown in Fig. 5, being moved to and held in such position by its engagement with and the move- `ment of the stencils. Vhen, however, a duplicate, impression of a stencil is to'be recorded, the connecting rod 52 is depressed to cause it to. be released from the operating handle; and said connecting rod maythen occupy some position as that illustrated in dotted lines Fig. 8. As 4thus arranged, the pusher will'not be operated when the handle is rotated, although the printing sectors 25' and 26 will rotate. Upon the rotation of the operating handle, the sectors will be caused to engage the stencily disposed between the stencil retriever and the stencil receiver and will move thatstencil forwardly in the track vand print therefrom. This stencil will be also moved into the stencil re'- triever and cause the forward stencil to be displacedtherefrom. A complete rotation of the i operation handle` 4:1 when disconnected from the pusher thereby eects the first printing of the stencil from which multiple impressions are to be made. Inasmuch as during this revolution of the operating handle the pusher 50 has been inoperative by reason of the disconnection of the connecting rod from its handle no'stencil has been delivered into the track from the stencil receiver. Consequently, when the sectors 25 and 26 have moved the stencil into substantially the position illustrated in Fig. 5 and have released the stencil, said stencil and the stencil retriever are free to move rearwardly along said track` by reason of the retractive effort of the spring 97 and consequently the stencil is again moved into its original printing position and.v comes to rest against the inner end of the pusher. If but one extra impression is to be made from the stencil, the connecting rod 52 is raised upwardly, when the handle is in the position shown 1n .f Fig. 48, whereby to cause the connecting rod to be operatively connected with the handle. On a second rotation of the operating handle, the retrieved stencil is again moved forwardly by reason of its engagement with the printing sectors and the second impression is made from said stencil. handle is rotating throughout the upper half 'of its clockwise movement the pusher 50 is being moved outwardly into position to engage and deliver a stencil from the stencil holder. During the lower 'half of the rotaltion of the operating handle, the pusher is moved inwardly and. thereby delivers a fresh stencil into the stencil track. rlhis fresh stencil is caused to engage with the stencil in the stencil retriever, thereby to hold said stencil from. being again returned so that upon the second rotation of the operating handle, the fresh 'stencil is engaged by the printing sectors and moved forwardly to displace .from the stencil retriever the stencil from which duplicate impressions have been As the operating4 recorded; and the stencil will be retrieved by` the stencil retriever as many times as multiple prints are desired. If duplicate irnpressions are desired from every stencil contained in the stencil holder, as for the printing of certain types of bills for instance, the
connecting rod will be disconnected from and` subsequently connected to the operating handle at every alternate complete revolution thereof.
ltwill be noted that while a stencilv may be returned into the printing position by the stencil retriever, the sheet on which the impressions areirecorded is not `returned but is maintained in'position to which it has been moved by the printing sectors and for the reason that the stencil retriever engages the stencil alone and not the sheet printed upon. During the second printing operation from the same stencil, however, the sheet is again engaged by the sectors, along with the stencil, and both are moved forwardly simultane-r ously while the second printing impression is being recorded.
There is a certain part of the operation `the stencil holder and preventsuch backward movement, while not restricting the forward movement of the stencils. Said latch may be desirable when multiple impressions are to be recorded of but certain stencils, but ordinarily is not necessary, when but single impressions are to be recorded, or when multiple impressions of every lstencil are to be recorded. Y
ln connection with the means for providing for theprinting of a plurality of impressions 'from the same stencil, means are also provided for imprinting identical characters as,1 for instance, a date, upon all the s sheets adapted to-bear the stenciled charac-- ters; and the dating device is or may be arranged to print the date each time an impression of the characters borne by each stencil is made and also veach time a duplicate impression -is made from the stencils.
The dating device includes a' sectorv 110 which sector is formed or provided with an arcuate T slot 111 in the peripheral face thereof, which slot is adapted to receive type slugs 112. Said sector 11() is formed or provided with a semi-circular hub 113, which hub preferably is extended laterally on one side only of the sector. Said hub is formed with a semi-circular recess 114 which recess is adapted to receive the upper operating shaft 35. Thesemicircular hub 116 is xed to said shaft 35 between the arms 36 and 37 of the bracket 38 and said hub may be complemental to the hub 113 of said dating sector 110.
Said dating sector preferably is detachably received on said shaft 35 between said arms 36 and 37 and in substantial alignment with the hub 116. An open ended circular spring member 117 is received over said fixed hub 116 and the hub 113 of said date sector and thereby serves to secure said date sector detachably in driving position on said shaft Said date sector may be removed for change of type by removing said spring member 117. A platen sector 115 may be fixed permanently to the lower operating shaft 27 and 30 disposed thereon as to support the sheet to receive the date borne by the date sector.
The type carried by said date sector may be inked by means of an ink roll 120, which ink roll'is disposed between said date sector and the stencil holder; and is rotatably lmounted on the bracket 83. Said 'ink roll 120 may be composed of felt or otherporous and ink absorbent material and isadapted to be engaged by the type on said type sector as the sector is rotated. Said ink roll is adapted to retain a suicient quantity of ink to render unnecessary the re-inking of the` roll except at extended intervals. Said date sector is so arranged on the operating shaft 35 that both the date and the characters borne by the stencils are imprinted simultaneously upon the sheet. If the machine is so operated that but a single impression is made of the stencils and a new sheet is disposed on the bed 11 of the machine and under the stencil track for each impression, then but a single date impression willbe recorded on a single sheet.` If, however, the stencil retriever is brought into action, a date impression will be made upon the sheet, at spaced intervals thereon, each time an impression is made from the same -stencilf A counting device may be associated with the machine above described whereby to record automatically the number of times impressions have been made thereby to record the numberof pieces of work printed upon. The counting device 130 may be xed to a suitable part of the frame of the maclii and may have a flexible arm 131 attached its movable component. Said arm is disposed within the path of movement of the arm 40 attached to the upper operating shaft 35, and said flexible arm 131 is adapted to be en aged at each revolution of said arm 40 where y to actuate the counting device.
The structure may be otherwise modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A. stencil printing machine comprising means to advance stencils in successive order toward a printing position and means to move a selected stencil repeatedly into and out of such printing position including means to disable said stencil-advancing means.
2. A stencil printing machine comprising means to advance stencils in successive order toward a printing position and means tol move a selected stencil repeatedly into and out of such printing position including means to. disable said stencil-advancing means, and means to advance a sheet progressively forward through said printing position.
3. A hand-operated stencil printing ma chine including means to advance stencils in successive order toward a printing position, means to receive a sheet to be printed upon in printing relation with a stencil, a printing device arranged to engage and print from said successively-advanced stencils, and means to make multiple prints from a selected stencil including means to move the sheet forward to present a fresh surface to be printed upon,- and means to rretract a used stencil into a position to be again operatively engaged by said printing device.
4. A hand-operated stencil printing `machine including means to deliver stencils in successive order to a printing position, means to receive a sheet to be printed upon in printing relation with a stencil, a printing device arranged to engage and print from said suc. cessively-delivered stencils, and means to make multiple prints froma selected stencil including means to arrest the action ofy said stencil delivery means, means to move the sheet to present a fresh surface to be printed upon, and means including said printing device to move the same stencil successively -into and out ofprinting position.
5. A stencil printing machine including mea-ns to deliver stencils in successive order to a printing position, means to receive a sheet to be printed upon in printing relation witha stencil, a printing device arranged to engage and print from said stencils, and means to make multiple prints from a selected stencil including means to disable the stencil delivery means, means to present the selected stencil to be engaged successively by said printing device, and means to move the sheet to be printed upon during each print-y ing operation.
6. A,I stencil prlnting machine including means to ,deliver stenclls 1n successive order to a printing position, sheet-moving means, a printing device Yarranged to engage and print from said stencils, and means to make multiple prints from na selected stencil including means to disable the stencil delivery means, means to move the selected stencill re- `peatediy -into position to be engaged by said printing device, and means to actuate said sheet-feeding means for each impression made of the stencil.

A stencil printing machine having the combination of superimposed stencil driving and printing. sectors arranged to engage a stencil and the work to be printed upon and move both simultaneously in engagement with each other 'while recording the stencilled characters on the work, and thereafter release said stencil andthe work, means to -rotate said sectors continuously to deliver moved forwardly by said sectors.
15. A stencil printing machine having the combination of superimposed ldriving and prlntlng sectors arranged to engage a stencll and the work to be printed upon for` approximately half a revolution of said sectors from the stencils, and means to make muland move the stencil and work simultaneously in engagement with each other while recording the stencilled characters on the work, and release and be free from engagement with the stencils and the work during the remaining portion of a complete revolution of said sectors, means to rotate said sectors in unison, means to deliver stencils in successive order into position to be engaged by said sectors, and means to make multiple prints or" said stencils including means to disable said stencil delivery'means, and means to return a printed stencil bctween said disengaged sectors and into a position to be again engaged by and moved forwardly of said sectors while retaining the work against return movement.
16. A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils Atherein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including means to return the stencils along the tracks into a position to be again engaged and driven forwardly by said sectors.
17. A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to more stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including means to return the stencils alongthe track into a position to be again engaged and driven forwardly by said sectors and means to disable said stencil moving means prior to the operation of said stencil returning means.
18. A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing tiple prints from the stencils in said track including detachable means to return the stencils along the track into a'position to be again-engaged and driven forwardly by said sectors.
19. A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive 'order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including stencil retrieving means varranged continually-in engagement withthe stencils in said tracks, and means to condition said retrieving means to operate to return a stencil backward along said track into a position to be again engaged by said sectors. v
20.,A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides ot said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing fromthe stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including stencil retrieving means arranged continually in engagement with the stencils in said tracks, and means to condition said retrieving means to operate to return a stencil backward along said track into a position to be again engaged by said sectors, said conditioning means including means to disable said stencil moving means.
21. A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including stencil retrieving means arranged continuously in frictional engagement with the stencils in said track and means to condition said retrieving means to A,operate to move a stencil backward along said track int-o a position to be again engaged by said sectors.

A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors ldisposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including stencil retrieving means arranged continuously in frictional engagement with the marginal portions of. the stencils in said track and means to condition said retrieving means to operate to move a stencilbackward along said track into a position to be again engaged by saidsectors.

A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils n successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including stencil retrieving means arl ranged in engagement with the stencils in said track and constructed and arranged to act upon the stencils in adirection to move them backward along said track against the i action of said sectors and stencil movingI means, andl means to condition said retrieving meansfor retrieving operation .including means to disable said stencil moving means. v

A stencil printing machine including the combination of a' stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engagethe stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from lthe stencils in said track f including stencil retrievingmeans comprising a member having meansto engage frictionally the stencils in said stencil track,
means to guide said member for reciprocatory movement in the direction ofstencil movement in said track, means to move said member into a position yto re-present a printed stencil engaged by it fora second printinooperation and means to condition said member for operation.

A stencil printing lmachine including the combination or a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing sectors disposed on opposite sides of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them *therealong while print- `ing from the stencils., and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track includirA stencil retrieving means comprising a member having means to engage frictionalfly the 'stencils insaid stencil track, means to lguidev said member for reciprocatory movement inthe direction of stencil-movement in said track, forward and rear stop-members arranged to be engagedV by said member and'limit the extent of reciprocatory movement thereof, means' to move said member against said rearl stop-member and into a position to re-present a printed stencil engaged by it for a second rinting operation, .and means to condition said member for operation.

A stencil printing machine including the combination of a stencil track, means to move stencils in successive order into said track, superimposed driving and printing v sectors disposed on opposite sides 'of said track in position to engage the stencils therein and drive them therealong while printing from the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including stencil retrieving means comprisin a member having means through which the stencils in said track are passed and engaged frictionally, saidl member having a stencil-engaging extent which does not substantially exceed the length of a stencil,
4means to guide said member for forward movement in a direction substantially paral-` lel to the direction of movement of the stencils in said track, a forward stop-member arranged to engage and restrict the forward movement of said member in an engaging position with but one stencil in said track,
a rear stop member, means constantly urging said member and stencil therein contained toward said rear stop-member, and means to condition said member for operation.

A stencil printing machine including the combination of astencil track, means to move stencils 1n successive order into said track, superimposed drivingl and printing sectorsv disposed o-n opposite sides of said track in a position to engage the stencils thereinan'd drive them therealong while printing from -the stencils, and means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track includin stencil retrieving means comprising a mem er arranged for sliding vmovement upon vsaid track and having Vmeans through` which the stencils in said track are passed and engaged frictionally,v
said member having a stencil-engagin eXtent which is not greater than the lengt of a stencil, a forward stop-member arranged to restrict the forward movement of said member by said stencils and hold itin engaging position with a single stencil, a
rear stop-member, a spring connected with p said track inclu ing stencil-retrieving-means comprising a vmember lhaving opposed resilient arms adapted to engage and slide lfreely upon the stencil track, said arms eX- tendedinwardly into the stencil s ace in the track and having'inwardly reflcxed endportions arranged yieldingly to engage'the opposite Amarginal faces of the stencils in said track, the stencil-engaging end-portions of said arms having a stencil-engaging extent ynot greater than the len h of a stencil, a forward stop-member a apted-to restrict the forward movement of said member *byA the stencils' in said track and hold said member in engaging position with a single stencil, a rear stop-member, a sprin connected with said member and arrange to ur e it toward said rear stop-member where y to return a stencil engaged by it into osition for re-printing, and means to condition said stencil-retrieving means for operation including means to disable said Stencil moving means.

In a stencil printing machine having means to move stencils successively into an out of a printing position and simultaneously print from the stencils, a stencil retrieving device having means to grip each stencil as it moves into printing position with sufficient strength to return the stencils to the printing position, when sucli movement is not otherwise prevented, and to permit the stencils `to be moved thereinto and therethrough by the stencil-moving means.

A stencil printing machine having the combination of astencil track, stencil printing means disposed in operative relation with the stencils in said track, a stencil holder disposed at one side of said printing means and in position to deliver stencils t) said track, means to deliver stencils in successive order from said stencil holder to said track, operating means for lsaid printing means and delivery` means, andfmeans'- to condition said printingr means for operationl independently of said delivery means in- I cluding means to render said stencil delivery comprising means to ilisconnect said delivery means from operative relation with said operating means.

A stencil printing machine having the combination of a stencil track, stencil rintingv means ldisposed in operative yre ation with the stencils in said track, a stencil holder 'disposed at one sideof said printing means and in position to deliver stencils to said track, means to deliver stencils in successive order lfrom, said stencil holder to said track, common manual operating means for said printing means and delivery means, and
means for operation independently of said delivery means comprising manual disabling means for sai'd delivery means `i posed for operation at said operating meaiis.

A stencil printing machine having 1the combination of a stencil track, stencil printing means disposed in operative relation with the stencil in said track, a stencil holder disposed at one side vof said printstencilsin successive order fromsaid stencil holder to said track, operating means vrfor v both said printing rmeans and delivery means, and means to arrest the reciprocatory y` movement of said delivery means and operate said printing means Yindependently ofk said delivery means. A stencil printing machine having the combination of a stencil track, stencil printing means disposed in operative relation with the stencils in said track, a stencil holder disposed at one side of said printing means and in position 'to deliver stencils to said track, means to deliver stencils in successive order from said stencil holder to said track, including a pusher reciprocable below said stencil holder and arranged successively to engage the lowermost stencils in said holder and move them successively into said tracks, operating means for said pusher, and printing means including a rotatable crank arm, a connecting rod connecting said crank arm and pusher, and a breakable connection between said connecting rod and crank arm. A stencil printing .machine comprising the combination of a stencil track, intermittently operating means todeliver stencils successively into said-track, intermittently operating means to engage and move the stencilsA 'along said track" and at the same time print therefrom, means to make multiple prints from the stencils in said track including a member arranged continually to act upon the stencils in said track and move v them backwardv therealong in position to bev re-engaged. by said printing means, and means' to hold said stencils from backward movement in said track during the period of operation of said printing and delivery means. f

A stencil printing machine having the combination of a stencil track, means to feed stencils successively into said track, upper and lower sectors arranged to engage the stencilsV in said track and move them therealong and simultaneously print therefrom, upper and lower operatin shafts on which said sectors are mounte and auxiliary printing means including superimposed upper and lower sectors carried by said operating'shafts, means to secure said upper sector detachably to its operating shaft, said upper sector having means removably to receive printing characters, inking means arranged in operative relation with said upper sector, and means tor drive all sectors simultaneously. v

A stencil printing machine having the combination of a stencil track, means to feed stencils successively into said track, upper and lower sectors arranged to engage the stencils in said track and move them theref journalled on said pivoted arm and disposed in .operative relation with said upper aux-- iliary sector, and means to drive all sectors simultaneously.
