Application Medium 5, 1923. SeriaLNo. 643,522.
ii-iilwaulrec. in the county of hlilwaul zee and State of i cousin, have invented certain new and useful improvementsin Caps, oft.
which the following is a specification, refer.- ence being had. tothe r companying drawing, forming a part thereof.
lhis invention relates more particularly to soft brimless caps.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a light, comfortable and attractive cap, havii'rg an outwardly and upwardlv folding bacl: band and necl; protector with inwardly and downwardly folding throat flaps at the ends which when unfolded, turned down and fastened under the chin will. effectively protect the ears and bacl: of the neck in cold or stormy weather and which when folded up will with a front reinforcing band, impart strength, stability and an attractive appearance to the cap; and
generally to simplify, facilitate and improve the construction and to increase the adaptability, convenience and coi'nfort of such caps.
It consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein after particularly described and pointed out in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing like characters designate the same parts in both figures. i
Figure l is a perspective view of a cap emhodving the invention, with the back hand il ie of the throat flaps unfolded and turned down: and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cap with the throat [laps folded inside of the back band and fastened therewith to the crown.
The cap. which may be made of knitted or other soft elastic fabric, comprises a crown u, an u iwardly and inwardly foldinc bacl; hand and necl: and ear protector brand fastening and throat protecting flaps c. adjacent the ends of the band adapted to fold inwardly and downwardly inside of the upturned band.
The several parts enumerated may be and preferabl are made from a single piece of fabric integrally with one another, as shown.
The fabric is cut to form a crown of the desired rounded shape, the curved edges of the twosides or parts of the crown being joinedtogether by. a median seam d, extend ing, from, a point in the upper part of the back of? the crown, as shown in Fig. 1, forwardly through the front side of the crown, as shown in Fig. 2. v
To reinforce and give the crown a more attractive appearance, thecap is provided with a front band 0, which is stitched along itslower edge to the crown and is preferably fastened at its upper edge or corners to the crown. Below the front band 6, the extension of the crown forming the band is cut away or terminates, as shown in Fig. 1, a short distance in advance of the ends 7 of the band 6, so that when it is turned down, the eyes of the wearer will remain in'icovered and when it is turned up, as shown in Fig. 2, it will overlap the ends of the front band.
'lhe flaps a, which join and fold along the free sides of the back band 6 adjacent its front ends, are made of such width vertically that they will fold out of sight inside of the back band when it is turned up, as shown in Fig. 2, and when it is turned down, as shown in Fig. 1, will pass under and lap each other under the chin of the wearer, thereby affording protection to the throat besides serving to hold the downturned back band in place snugly over the ears.
The flaps 0 are provided with suitable fastening means for holding them lapped together under the chin, such for example, as a button f, attached to one flap, and a button hole g, formed in the other, as shown.
The cap is also provided with. suitable means for fastening the bac band 7) and the flaps c in place when they are folded up against the crown, shown in Fig. 2. For this purpose, the flaps are shown as pro vided on their inner sides adjacent their front and rear edges and the horizontal lines on which they fold, with members '72 of snap fasteners, and the crown is provided with complementary members 2' of such fasteners, which are completely concealed when the flaps are folded with the back hand against the crown, as shown in Fig. 2.
When. they are folded, the flaps c are conipletely concealed, and the back band 6 forms in effect a continuation of the front band 6, giving the cap a substantial and attractive appearance for ordinary wear in mild or n ioderate weatl'ier.
Various changes in the details of construction of the cap may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the following claim.
I claim:
J cap comprising a crown having an upwardly foldable back band, a reinforcing front band secured along the lower edge thereof to the adjacent lower edge of said crown, the ends of said front band extending rearwardly beyond the ends of said back band whereby the adjacent ends of said bands overlap when said back band is fold-, ed upwardly thereby forming in effect a continuation of said front band, said back band being provided with throat-protecting flaps, the vertical dimension of said flaps being such as to permit folding of the same out of sight between said crown and said back band when the latter is folded upwardly,
said flaps being provided on their inner sides adjacent their front and rear edges and adjacent the line on which they fold with fastening members, said crown being provided with complementary fastening members adapted and arranged for coaction with said first-mentioned members when said back band is folded upwardly and said flaps folded between the latter and said crown whereby said members are completely concealed and act to hold said back band nature.
