Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL R. PRATT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
d IMPROVEMENT IN NuT-LocKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,234, dated October 27, 1874; applicationrfled July 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL R. PRATT, of the city of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in what I denominate Socket-Spring Nuts, and I do hereby declare the following to be a true and correct description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part and parcel of this my specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a socketed follower for springnuts, and its combination with a cup containing within it a spring, of rubber ory metal, the whole, being secured together in the manner hereinafter described, the socket above referred to being formed upon the upper side of the follower, and constituting a part of the same, and constructed in such aform as to receive a nut that engages with the bolt used.
The cup has projecting grooves upon its sides to receive corresponding projecting lugs upon the socket, and has also ears that, when bent down on the socket plate, retain the latter in position and firmly attached to such cup. The nut being placed within said socket can be turned upon the bolt, carrying with it the socket and cup, and thus forms a socketspring nut. The nut projects a sufficient distance above the socket to be operated by means of a wrench. Y
Figure 1 is a top view oi' the socket for the reception of the nut, secured to the cup or spring holder. Fig. 2 is a cross-section in line a: x, Fig. 1, showing the cup, spring, and socket. Fig. 3 shows, in detail, the socket, spring, and cup.
In the drawings, A represents the socket, in which the nut is placed; B, the cup,'within which the spring O is inserted, lling the space between the central iiange E and the inner Wall of the cup B. D represents, in dotted lines, the nut as applied to the socket; and E. an upward-projecting dan ge in the bottom of the cup B to secure the spring O in its proper position. The ears a a a, formed upon the upper riln of the cup B after the spring O and socket A are adjusted, as shown in Fig. 2, are bent inward upon the ange of the socket, thus securing the whole together.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the socketed follower A, cup or spring holder B, and spring C, in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
Witnesses: DANIEL R. PRATT.
Jos. T. K. PLANT, B. F. JAMES.
