Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT L. PLATT, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN D. GON- NERS AND THEODORE K. OONNERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NUTMEG-GRATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 138,191, dated April22, 1873; application filed April 11, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. PLA T, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NutmegvGrraters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a nutmeggrater, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section, of my device. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
A represents a wooden block, made in rectangular shape, with one corner out off, forming the inclined side a. Through this block is made a circular opening, 2', for the reception of the metal grater B, which is made in cylindrical form, with perforations punched out from the inside to form the usual gratingsurface on the outside. The hole through the block A is made larger in diameter for the grating-surface of the cylinder than at ends, where the smooth surface of the cylinder has its bearings. To one end of the grater B is attached a crank, G, as shown. Through the inclined side a of the blockis an opening, b, for the reception of the nut, said opening being closed bya hinged lid, D, when the grater is not in use. Through thebottom of the block is another opening, d, both of said openings 1) and 01 leading from the center opening, in which the grater is placed.
This device is held in the left hand by the thumb and middle or long finger, while the index finger presses upon the nut in the hole I), and the crank G is turned in the usual way. The turning of the crank will keep the nut in place; but to hold it steady the forefinger should press on it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy As an article of 'manufacture, the nutmeggrater shown and described, constructed of a single block of wood, A, with openings 12 i d, grating-cylinder B, and crank 0, connected to the rim of the cylinder, all as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of April, 1872.
v ALBERT L. PLATT.
