Description

J. KERCHER 'romcco SMOKING PIPE Nov. 17
Fired July 26, 1924 Patented Nov. 17, 1925.
JOHN rIKERCVIHiELR, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
" 'roisAcoo-sii/ronniev rien.
Application led July 26, 1924. Serial No. 728,285.
To all whom t may concern.'
Beit known that. I, Jol-1N Kiziufnnn, `a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Smoking Pipes, of which the following is a specication. V
My invention relates to tobacco smoking pipes, and has for its paramount object the vprovision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eilicient in use. Y y
Among its further objects, my invention has in view the provision of a durable, sanitary pipe of the character specified, constructed with an outer and an inner bowl, inner bowl being suspended within and from the top region of, the outer bowl. According to an important feature of the invention, the suspension means includes a medium that is a poor conductork of heat, and all of the space between the bowls below the region of suspension comprising a smoke or air chamber. The construction is such that liquid and poisonous substances resulting from combustion of thel tobacco, will gather in the bottom of the outer bowl, and the pipe stein has communication with this smoke chamber at a height whereat such liquid and poisonous substances cannot be drawn therethrough by the smoker.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood byv reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which, i
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of my improved tobacco smoking pipe.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and
F ig. 3 shows a side and a sectional View, respectively, of the inner and outer bowls in position for assembling, the ring in the outer bowl being shown as it appears before being' engaged by the screw threads on the inner bowl.
IVith more particular reference to the accompanying drawing, my improved pipe includes two bowls, an inner bowl 4 and an outer bowl 5, the inner bowl being considerably smaller in size than the outer bowl and being suspended within the outer bowl so as to provide a continuous smoke-or air 1,562,175* PATENT` orifice-i chamber 6 between the bottom and. si-fle walls of the bowls, the two bowls having a connection between them only at their top ends According to an'iniportaiit featureof Y invention, the outer bowl is mafie at its topv end with a thickenedregion, preferably in y the form of an exterior annular beadv 7. On its inner face, concentric with the' bead i', the outer bowl is providedwith an annular groove 8 of angular form in cross section,
having a horizontal wall 9 defining its bottom andan upwardly and inwardly inclined wall 1() opposite the bottom wall, so' that this groove may be saidy to decrease upwardly in cross section. The inner bowl 4 is made at its top end with Aan overhanging flange 11, having its top surface curved outwardly Vas shown. Immediately below this threads 13. f
For insertion in the groove 8, I provide a ring 14 having its outer circumference 15A f i formed to correspond with said` groove. In cross section this ring is of larger dimension than said groove in order that it' may be compressed into the groove and still have its -inner circumference 16 stepped inwardly from` the interior surface of the outer bowl. 1 This ring'is preferably produced from cork,
in order to provide a support thatv is a poor conductor of heat, that is susceptible to an appreciable degree of compression, and that is adapted to retain screw threads when cut therein. The inner `circumference of the ring 14 is made plain Vas shown-in Fig. '3, but when the inner bowl is inserted in the outer bowl, the male screw-threads 13 Vout co-operating threads 17, as shown in Fig. 2, in the inner circumference of the cork ring.
The inner bowl 4 is provided kat its bottom end with a plurality of apertures 18 through which the smoke may be drawn into the' smoke chamber 6 and thence through the pipe stem 18 which has threaded engagement at 19 with the outer bowl at a eeption of e convenient tool such es e knife blade for the turning oi' the inner bowl in applying or removing` the saine.
`While l have illustrated and described the preferred form o' construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable-ot variation :ind'modilica-tion without departing` from the spirit oi the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited te the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to eveil myself ot' such variations und modifications us come within the scope oii the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what i claim as new und desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. ln it tobacco pipe, the combination with un outer bowl und un inner bowl, of a ring member removably set in the outer rbowl and projecting` from the inner surface thereof, a threaded region which is'inclined inwardly und downwardly carried by the inner bowl'zind adapted to co-operuterwith seid ring, land to have u wedging action thereon, und ineens receptive of a turning` instrument formed in the top of the inner bowl, substantially as described.
2. n u tobacco pipe, an outer bowl having an annular interior undercut recess ut the top thereof, u ring member removably seated in said recessund having its outerperiphery correspondine` .in form to said recess whereby to be wedged therein, und having its opening us defined by its inner periphery oi' less diameter than the interior diameter of seid outer bowl, and an inner bowl fitting within said ring,` member und provided with screw-threads tapering inV cpposition to the undercut recess screw threaded into seid ring member, substuntially as described. i i
In testimony whereof Ihave'signed my name to this specification.
JOHN KERCHER.
