IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-BOOKS.

7 tions, made attachable and removable with respect to the cover or envelope, by means of separately-acting fastenings, affording facilities for rotatory succession in the employment of the severalsections of the book, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, the object being to facilitate the keeping of a constant supply of blank" space to be filled up together with a given extent or quantity of that already filled-as, for instance, the memorandums of one entire year last past always in hand for reference.

With reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the complete book, section a being a removable almanac. and b, 0,

. d, and e removable sections. Fig. 2 illustrates one of the sections; Fig. 3, the same, with diiferent form of fastening-slits in the back. Fig. 4 illustrates, in twoviews, a link, usually of metal, made to enter the slits in the back of the sections, for holding them, while itself is secured to the back of the cover or envelope. Fig. 5 illustrates, in two views, a link,

with divided spring-bow adapted to hold in slits or openings, of a form shown in the back of the section seen in Fig. 3, with or without the blade or needle of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 illustrates, in two views, a needle or blade used in connection with the links, as illustrated in Fig. 7, to secure the sections. Fig. 8 illus trates the sections and arrangement for notes, memorandums, &c. Fig. 9 is a section with one large opening in back. Fig. 10 shows the divided link of Fig. 5 closed ready for entering the slit in the back of the book-section. Fig. 11 shows the link secured to the cover or envelope by slipping an attached shank, g, between an inner and outer part thereof. Fig.

12 shows the divided link applied in a similar manner, the leaves of the link being open, as when holding the section of Fig. 3, without the use'of the needle of Fig. 7. These links may, however, be secured to the cover in any other convenient manner by sewing, riveting, &c. Fig. 13 shows same link expanded and holding the Section of leaves. Fig. 14 illustrates the application of a guard attached to the link to assist the link in retaining the book-sections.

The drawings, with the above description thereof, sufficiently explain the improvement and its application; but the use for which it is designed, and which it is expected to lead to as a comparatively new result or practice, deserves further explanation, viz.: Keeping in hand blank spaces for recording memoranda, notes, &c., for each day in the year, both on its date and in advance of its date, as reminders before the time, and holding therewith in the same book the record for a given time past entire, as for one year, for instance.

In doing this, the book is first filled blank with its detachable almanac, as seen in Fig. 1. The book is now used like other diaries till filled. When filled, if the almanac is now out of date, slip it out by compressing leaves it it together, and drawing it gently forth; or,

when the needle m is used, by slipping that out first, then removing section. Where reminder-notes are to be placed considerably forward, two or more blank sections may be kept in constantly, with more or less of the filled-up ones to suit.

The links maybe made, as also the needles m, of thin metal, or any suitable material.
