BOOKBINDING.
Application filed AAugust-,111, 1921.
T all whom t may concern.'
Bc it known that I, lViLLIAM B. PinmsoN, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Bookbinding, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to book binding and its principal object is to provide a book l0 binding which will securely retain the back of the book and iy leaves together, and is such as to obviate the fly leaves breaking away from the back.
A further object of thc invention is to l provide a book binding Which will render the assembling of the book comparatively simple and at the same time .vill not materially increase the cost of manufacture of the book.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a book binding Which will be employed with either stiftl cardboard book backs or" flexible n'iagazine book backs.
lWith the preceding and other objects and 5 advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts and operations to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective of'a book having the binding secured thereto;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail view after one of the binding strips has been secured to the y leaf;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sec tional view of'a book including my improved binding;
Figure 4i is a fragnientary elevation before the binding strip is secured to the Hy leaf;
y Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional vieW of a book having a stiff back including my improved binding;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating one form of stitching embodied in the invention;
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line of Figure 6;
Serial No. 489,762.
- second modified form of stitching;
Figure 9 is a horizontal sectional view i taken on line 9 9 of Figure 8;
Figure 10 is a perspective of a second modified embodiment of the invention; and
Figure 11 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Referring in detail to the drawings Wherein similar characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates the usual leaves of the book and G the fiy leaves thereof. Secured to the opposite faces of the leaves 5 at its rea-r longitudinal edges by means of stitching or gluing are strips 7 which extend from one end of the leaves to the other. Held between the opposite faces of the leaves 5 and the secured edges of the strips 7 are strips S Whose ends stop short of the ends of the leaves.
lAs disclosed in Figure 3, the strips 7 are bent around the rear longitudinal edges of the fly leaves 6 yand are secured thereto, as at 9, while the strips 8 are secured to the inner face of the book back 10, as indicated at 11.
Upon referring to'Figure 3, it Will be noted that the lower strip 8 is illustrated in a position before it is finally secured to the cover 10, as above stated.
In Figure 5, the binding is illustrated in connection With a type of book employing a stiff cardboard back 12. In this instance, the strips 7 and 8 are disposed upon opposite faces of the back 12 and secured thereto, as at 13, the back in this instance being glued to one of the fly leaves 14. The usual covering 15 is secured to the outer face of the back 12 and embraces the bound edges of the leaves 5.
In Figures 10 and 11 a second modiication of the invention is illustrated. In this construction, pairs of tabs 16 are employed in lieu of the longitudinal strips 8 embodied in the structure shown in Figure 1.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herein shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the saine, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the snbjoined claim.
Having thus described iny invention, what I claini as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United Sta-tes, is
The combination with book leaves, of a pair of adjacent strips of different lengths secured to a face of the leaves extending adjacent a longitudinal edge, the longer of the pairs of the adjacent stripsv extending to the transverse edge thereof and a stiff cover elenient secured between the strips, the strips contacting the surface of the cover element, one of Said strips extending to the opposite ends thereof.
"WILLIAM B. PEARSON.
