COMPOUND TURBINE BLOWER.
Application filed August 18, 1924. Serial No. 732,601.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Cook County, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new ful Improvements in Compound Turbine Blowers, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to compound turbine blowers, and is in the nature of an improvement upon the compound turbine blower shown and described in my prior Patent No. 1,418,70i issued June 6, 1922.
Among the objects of the present invention are to increase the efliciencv of blowers of the type disclosed in my former patent, to simplify and reduce the cost of construction thereof, and to otherwise improve thereon. \Vith these and other objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in the several novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a View, partly in side elevation and partly in central vertical section of a compound turbine blower illustrating the preferred embodiment of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical, cross section thereof, taken on the broken line 22 of Fig. 1,. and Fig. 3- is a vertlcal, cross section. taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.

Briefly each fan 18, comprises a hub 17, a disc or plate 20 an annular ring or plate 21 spaced away from the disc or plate 20, and blades or vanes 22 secured to and connecting the disc 20 and ring As in my prior patent the tips 23 and use-'- somewhat distant from 19 rigidly secured to the shaft secured to the hub 19,
of the blades or vanes 22 may betwisted or bent back along oblique lines, whereby the air, in leaving the fans, vmayflow in an out ward and lateral direction. The inner edge of the ring or annular plate 21 of the fan defines the air inlet opening 18 of ,the fan, which opening is approximately of the same diameter as the inlet opening 1 of the easing. The circular plates 20, 21. and blades 22 form air passages through the fan, the inlet openings of which are at the inner edges of the blades, and the discharge openings at the outer edges thereof. Air enters each fan through the inlet opening 18, is thrown outward through the passages tween the blades thereof and discharges outwardly and in a lateral direction from the periphery of the fan into an annular channel or passage 24, located between the pe-- riphcrv of the fan and the cylindrical wall 14 of the casing. All of the fans shown'are substantially of the same construction as the one just described, and it is to be understood that such description applies to all of them.
The fans are spaced apart upon the shaft,
and between said fans are annular partition walls 25. \VlllCh are secured to the cyhndr wall and through lugs or angle brackets 27 welded or otherwise fastened to the annular partition walls 25. The fan 18 is placed adjacent and beyond the fan 18 is an annular part1- tion wall 28, similar to the walls 25 and secured to the case in like manner. The head 12, partition walls 25, 25, 28 and cylindrical wall-14 form chambers between-them,-
in one side of each of which, is one of the fans, and between each fan and partition wall 25, or 28 is a space which is divided into a plurality of air passages 29, by stationary vanes or blades 30, 31. Said stationary vanes or blades have angular outer ends and extend tangentially from places the cylindrical wall l i'toward the annular inlet openings 25 of the partitions 25, 28, the stationary vanes or blades 30 extending to said openings, and the stationary vanes or blades 31, extending only part way, preferably about half way so as to leave comparatively wide orts or openings between the inner edgeso the stationary vanes or blades 30, wherebythere may be unrestricted ,openmgs the head 12 of the casing,-

The stationa vanes or blades 30, 31 may be cast with the partition walls 25, 28 if desired, and they may extend to within a slight distance of an associated fan disc or plate 20, The outer end portions of the edges 32 of said stationary vanes or blades may project close to said fan discs and may be machined to fit fairly close to said discs. In order to obtain the desired results, the outer ends of the vanes or blades must be spaced sufiiciently distant from the cylindrical wall of the casing to leave an annular free and un-- obstructed air passage to permit of the unobstructed flow of the air in a circular path, because if the space between the cylindrical wall and ends of the vanes is not sufficient to permit of the free and-unobstructed circular movement of the air the efiiciency of the blower is immediately impaired. The cross sectional area of the annular air passage 24 is therefore made relatively "large, the distance between the ends of the stationary vanes or blades and the cylindrical Wall 14, being not less than that between the periphery of the fan and said wall. 2
The space between the partition wall 28 and head 13 comprises a chamber 33 for the accumulated air, and the discharge conduit 34 leads away from said chamber 33.

In the operation of the present blower, air is taken into the casing through the inlet opening 14 in the head 12 and enters the spaces between the fan blades 22 of the fan 18, where it is thrownoutwardly at great velocity and is'defiected toward and 1nto the annular air passage 24 by the tips 23 of the blades 22. The air moves at a high velocity through the annular air passage in a circular direction and thereafter flows into the air passages 29 between the stationary vanes or blades 30, 31 which direct itto the first opening 25, through which it flows and enters the spaces between the blades of the second fan 18, which throws it outward at an increased velocity and it enters the assages between the stationary vanes or b ades of the second set of passages 29, and thence into the third 'fan 18", its velocity being increased, progressively as it is acted on by each succeedin fan, finally enterin the chamber 33 an assing out throng the discharge conuit 34.

Furthermore blower of this type. The rounded end Walls of the air chambers of the construction is are reduced, the parts may be assembled b less skilled workmen, and less machine work is necessary without sacrificing efliciency in any manner.
More or less variation of the exact details of construction is'possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend in the following claims, closed herein.

A compound turbine blower comprising a cylindrical casing having an air inlet opening and an air discharge opening, and having a plurality of chambers separated by partition Walls and connected by reduced, the weight, and number of parts to point out all of the invention disthe space between each fan and a partition wall being divided into an outer free and unobstructed annular air passage of relatively large cross sectional area, into which the air is deflected by said end tips of the fan blades, and a ilurality of air passages leading from sai annular air assage to the opening in the partition wail.

A compound turbine blower comprisinga cylindrical casing having an air inlet opening and an air discharge opening, and having a plurality of chambers separated by partition walls and connected by openings through said partitionwalls, a drive shaft and fans mounted thereon, the fan blades of which have end tips that are inclined with respect to the remainder of the blades, and there being one tan in each of sand .chambers and located at one side thereof to leave a space at the other side thereof, there 'being an outer free and unobstructed annular air passage of relatively'large cross sectional area at the peripheral portion of said space into which the air is deflected by said end tips of thefa-n blades, and a plurality of stationary vanes inthe space between said fans and partition wall extending in a tangential direction from said annular air passage to the opening in the partition wall and forming separate air passages'for the air.
