MULTIPLE-IMPELLER PUMP. l
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom 'it Be it known is seated and rotates. e pairs I, J, 'and K, L, of diffuser rings are alike. l h ring.` is provided with a circumferential rib M, which is seated in a may concern: rings the impeller B that I, ALBERT E. GUY, a citi' Th residing at Tren- Mercer and State of ton, in the county of have invented a certain new and New Jersey,
useful Improvement in Multiple-Impeller uct, and with a circumferentlal flange N Pumps, of which the following is a specilihe flanges N N of eac pair of rings as I, cation. J, flare outwardly at their inner circumferparticularly i the walls 3io G `modified and commercially preferable form .diffuser ri The invention relates to multiple impeller pumps and consists in the combination in a multiple impeller lump of a plurality of impellers "constructecf to operate in parallel and having a .common suction,
ential edges so that an annular flaring space or nozzle is formed' between the rings through which thev delivery of the impeller passes before entering the box F. The pair of rings thus forms a diffuser which transforms the velocity of the discharge into' pressure Vwithin the box and so avoids shock.
It will, of course, be stationary portion of the macl made 1n removable sections so a dehvery chainiine may be in the various combinations more 'as to permit recited in the claims. t e' accompanying drawings`-l3`i,f ,1furesl l, 2 and 3 represent a simple form of multiple impeller pump embodying my inven. tion: Fig. l eing a' verticalsection on the line c of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 a vertical section on the line y y of Fig. l and Fig. 3 a section on the line e a of Fig. l, the impeller being removed. Figs. 4 'to 7 inclusive show a sure; also in Fi s. 4, 5, 6 `and 7, which a preferable form of the apparatus. In this form the suction ducts D, E, G, communicate with the inlet duct P which is here hori- The various fiuidpassages are curved to reduce friction and direct the flow Withoutrshock and the middle suction duct G is cast integrally with the box F. Said box with the suction ducts may bedivided horizontally intol two flanged parts united by bolts as shown at 7, in order to admit introduction of the rings and impellers.
In Letters Patent No. 907,040, dated December 15, 1908, and issued ing application,l I have claimed a of the pum Fig. 4 is a plan view, the uper separab e portion of the stationary part eing removed. Fi 5 is a section on the line a, b, c, d, of Fig. 4, the impellers and gs being removed. Fig. 6 is a section on the line c, j', of Fig. 7, and Fig. 7 is a section on the line L,`of Fig. 6.
Similarnumbers and letters of reference indicate like arts.
eferring rst to the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The impellers A, B, are mounted upon the shaft C, which is journaled in the walls l, 2, of the suction ducts D, E. ducts are d' tering said box isa third suction duct Gr.' he'three suction ducts D, E, G, form a suction chamber which communicates with the source of supply by the common inlet H. In circular o enings formed respectively in duct D and one wall t of duct A are seated two diffuser rings I, J and in said diffuser rings the vimpeller Aris seated and rotates. In circularl openin ,formed respectively in the Wall 5 of duct and the oposite wall 6 of ductf G areseated two d1 user rings K, L, and insaid'diiluser erein.
It will be noted that ithe'diflusers formed l IIatented Nov. 23, i909.
understood, that the ing the impeller are caused to move a curved path with a progressively decreasing velocity. It the curvature of the vanes o the diffuser corresponds exactly to vthis curved path of the stream of iuid such vanes are useless; while if saidvanes are of any other curvature, they may, according to de sign, cause the direction of the water to be modified, btt since in practice, pumps generally do not work .constantly under fixed conditions of Ahead and discharge, it follows that when these conditions vary the water leaves the impeller at a diiierent angle from f ber, said chamber having a free space out side of said diiusers into which the discharge from said diffusers may pass in a direction normal tothe axes of the correspondingiimpellers, said boX adapted to receive interchangeably impellers and diusers of different design and different diameters to suit different conditions.
2. A centrifugal pump comprising in coinbination-a shaft, a plurality of double suction impellcrs thereon, and a bonrl having supply passages for said impellers and a single discharge chamber for said impellers and having, between said inipellers and discharge chamber, unobstructed diffuser pas- -said chamber having a and discharge chamber and ar.
sages arranged to receive radial discharge from said impellers and to deliver such discharge radially into said discharge chamber, free space outside of said diiuser passages to receive such discharge and being adapted to receive inter ohangeablyinipellers and diiiusers of difierent design and diameters to suit diicrent conditions.
3. A centrifugal pump comprising in combination a rotary inipeller, and a box having supply and discharge passages, and a dit fuser interposed between the ixnpeller and discharge passage comprising two rings each seated in a Wall of said casing, each such ring and the corresponding portion of the wall having the one a groove and the other a rib fitted within said groove, whereby the rings are held in place, the space between said rings forming an annular diuser passage receiving the discharge from the im-v peller and delivering same to the discharge passage.
4. A. centrifugal pump comprising in combination a rotary ilnpeller, and a casing hav ing supply and discharge passages, and a diffuser interposed between the impeller and discharge passage comprising two rings each seated in a wall of said casing, each such rin and thc corresponding portion of the Wal having the one a groove and the other arib fitted Within said groove, whereby Cle rings are .held in place, the space between said rings being unobstructed and constituting a diiuser passa fre.
In testimony whereof l. have aiiixed my' signature 1n presence i J of two' witnesses. ALBERT E. GUY.
