To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. MoMUR- DIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State. of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan- Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fan blowers.
The object of this invention is to provide in a blower of this type a fan wheel or rotor which is built up of units so that the size of the wheel or rotor may be readilyincreased or lessened as circumstances may require, and which affords a very strong and rigid construction.
Further objects and objects relating to details and economies of structure and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. i
A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 is the base or standard'carrying the casing or housing 2. The housing 2is provided at one side wlth an lnlet cone 3 which is funnel shaped and leads toward the I intake opening in the side of the housing. The housing is also provided with the outlet openinge. A shaft 6 is journaled in suitable bearings on the base or standard 1 and said shaft 6 carries a driving pulley 5 by means of. which the shaft is revolved. Said shaft 6 extends through a suitable bearing in the side of the housing 2 into the interior thereof and a suitable hub 7 is secured upon the end of the shaft 6 so as to rotate therewith.
8 is a solid disk or back" plate which is secured to the hub 7. The fan wheel is provided with a plurality of rings 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 which are supported frointhe back. plate 8, in spaced relation thereto, by
means of a plurality of bolts 13 extending through the back plate 8 and the several rings and spacing sleeves 14 which-space the said rings and the back plate from each other, as is clearly shown in Fig. IV. These rings are all of the same diameter and of:
the same diameter as the backplate 8, but the diameter of the openings'in the center of these rings is greater as the rings are dis. posed towardthe front or intake end of the wheel, that is, the ring 9 which is toward the back of the wheel has a smaller central opening than the ring 10, and the ring 10 has a smaller central opening than the ring 11, a
and so on, passing from the back end ofthe wheel toward the intake end thereof. Each of the rings 9, 10, Hand 12 is provided with a deflecting flange 9, 10, 11 and 12 which is curved toward the intake end' of the wheel'and assists in deflecting the entering stream of air toward the discharge ports of the wheel. The outer ring 13 is not provided with a flange of this type nasmuch as this ring serves merely as ;a support for the outer row of-buckets. To each of these rings and to the innerosurface of theback plate 8 are secured a plurality of curved buckets 15, which buckets are provided on one er ge with an attaching flange 16, the buckets being secured in place by rivets passing through said flange. Buckets are secured on both surfaces of the intermediate rings 9, 10, 11 and 12 but these buckets are staggered with relation to each other, that is, no two of the buckets secured to the inner and outer surfaces of the ings are secured in line with each other. The rings are assembled in such relation to each other that the buckets carried by each ring are disposed between the buckets carried by adjacent rings, is clearly shown in Fig. III. In each case there is a short space or gap between the free edges of the buckets opposite the attaching flanges and the next adj acent ring.
In Fig. X I have shown a modified arrangement of the buckets in which they are secured to the inner and outer faces of the rings in line with each other. In shape the buckets are curved, as shown in Fig. V, that portion of the bucket which is disposed toward the intake chamber being curved on a shorter radius than that portion which is disposed toward the outer or discharge end of the bucket. The particular curvature of the buckets may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. The angle at which the buckets are secured in place relative to the rings depends upon the use to whichthe fan is to be put. For some purposes it is desirable to secure the buckets in place with the outer edge thereof in advance of the inner edge in the direction of rotation, as shown in Fig. III. For other purposes it is desirable to secure the buckets in place with the lower edge in advance of the upper edge. The angle at which the buckets are secured in place forms no part of my invention, the same being adapted to be changed according to the purposes for which the fan is to be used. In Fig. VII one of the buckets is shown by dotted lines secured at different angles relative to the supporting rings.
In Figs. VIII and IX I have shown a modified form of my invention. in which I have provided spiders 18 which are fixed upon the shaft 6 to rotate therewith and upon the arms of which a plurality of rings are supported by means of bolts 13 and spacing sleeves 14 in substantially the same way as in the preferred form of my invention. This modification differs from the preferred form in that the rings 19 are all alike instead of some of the rings being extended inwardly into the intake chamber and provided with curved deflecting flanges.
From the description of the parts given above, the operation of my device should be very readily understood. The fan wheel is rotated by means of power applied to the driving pulley 5 and by-means of such rotahen the air 18 drawn 111 between the lnner edges of the bucket 15 and discharged between the outer edges thereof. This draws the air out of the intake chamber, which comprises the space within the wheel or drum, and an- 1s drawn through the inlet cone?) into the intake chamber. The a1r;en-.
tering thus is deflected upwardly to the ports between the buckets'by means of the deflecting iiangest), 10', 11 and 12 on the rings 9, 10, 11 and 12. The distance to which the rings extend toward the center of the wheel is proportional to the distance at which said rings are located from the intake end ofthe wheel so that a proper proportion of the air is deflected toward each diminished in size by removing the outer ring. such as ring 13 in Fig. IV, andadding or removing the required number of intermediate rings with the buckets carried there by. In this way it will be seen that I have provided a unit wheel which is built up in units, the wheel being built up and assembled to the dimensions required according to the use to which it is to be devoted.
I am' aware that the particular structure which I have here shown is susceptible of considerable variation without departing,
from the spirit of my invention and, hence, I do not wish to be restricted to the same. I have .fcund however, that this form is to be preferred, and, therefore, I desire to claim the same specifically as well as broadly as indicated by my appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a shaft, of a drum mounted thereon to rotate therewith, said drum comprising a back plate secured;to said shaft, a plurality of rings carried by said back plate in spaced relation thereto, said back plate and said rings being of the same external diameter, the central openings of said rings varying in diameter in proportion to the distance from the back plate, de-
flecting flanges provided on the intermedi ate rings at the inneredges thereof; said flanges being curved toward the intake end of said drum,and curved buckets carried by said rings at the periphery thereof, said buckets being disposed in staggered relation to each other, and said rings being secured together so that each bucket is disposed be-.
