Description
l. M. DAVIS.
Methods of Making Boxes.
Patented Oct. 20,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE.
JEHIEL M. DAVIS, OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF MAKING BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,140, dated October 20,1874; application filed February 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEHIEL M. DAVIS, of Northampton, county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in the Method of Making Boxes.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
' My invention relates to that class of devices which are made use of for the purpose of joining the corners of boxes, cabinets, and arti cles manufactured of wood; and the nature thereof consists in the method of forming the corner, and in the novel combination of parts of which the corner is'constructed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention and forms a part of the specification thereof, Figure l is a perspective view of a corner of an article constructed according to my improved method.
At or near the point of intersection of the inner surfaces of the upright pieces M a triangular prism, N, Fig. 2, is fitted in such a manner as to exactly fill the angular space included between the said upright pieces. Af-
ter being so placed, the said triangular prism is secured and held in position through the medium of the device 1), the prongs d of which rest against the ends of the said upright pieces by the hand-clamp E, the jaws of which hold firmly together the said prism and the device D, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4, until the said prism is securelyfastened by means of the glue, which has been previously applied thereto, to the inner sides of the said upright pieces. The hand-clamp E and device D are now detached and removed, and an angular space, F, is cut or sawed out of the corner of the article for the reception of the corner-piece I, the outer surface of which may be of any desirable shape or ornamental form which I may prefer. The said corner-piece may be seecured in position by means of glue, or in any manner known to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
Having thus described the construction and method of operation in my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The method herein described of forming a corner upon articles manufactured of wood, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of February, 1874.
JEHIEL M. DAVIS.
