zen of the United States, residing at Allegany, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved hernial truss, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a truss of such class with means for not only affording relief to the wearer, but whereby the truss can be worn without inconvenience, as well as not interfering with the wearer when stooping or bending.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a truss of the class referred to, which is simple in its construction, strong, durable, thoroughly efficient in its use, conveniently applied and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists ofthe novel construction and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of a hernial truss, in accordance with this invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be had which will fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

'denotes a waist band or belt of substantial width and formed of any suitable flexible material. Secured to the outer face, at one terminal portion of the band 1, is a substantially rectangular plate 2. The securing means for the plate 2 are indicated at 3, and consist of two pairs of screws, with one pair arranged between the transverse center and the rear end of the plate and the other pair in proximity to the said rear end. rial and the plate 2 from leather, but it is to be understood that the band 1 and plate 52 can be constructed from any material found applicable for the purpose intended therefor. The forward end edge of the plate 2 is flush with an end edge of the band 1.

Positioned against the outer face of the plate 2, is a hook-shaped metallic coupling member with the hook 5 thereof or rlying the outer face of the body portion of the member 4, and the latter is positioned between the transverse center of the plate 2 and the forward end edge thereof. A pair of rivets 5' are employed for securing the member a to the plate 2, and said rivets are arranged at the rear end of the body portion of the member Connected to the member a by the hook 5, as well. as projecting forwardly thereof is a buckle 6, which coacts with the other end terminal portion of the band 1 for adjustably connecting the latter to the waist of the wearer.

Arranged against the inner face of that terminal portion of the band 1, to which the plate 2 is secured, is an inverted substantially pear-shaped laminated flexible pad referred to generally by the reference character 7, and which projects above and depends from the band 1. The pad 7 is so arranged with respect to the band 1, that the portion of the pad 7 which depends from the band 1 is of greater length than that part of the pad 7 which projects above the band 1.

The pad 7 is formed from a series of opposed flexible sections 8, of like contour and which are constructed of a heavy fabric, such as cotton duck, but it is to be under stood that the flexible sections 8 of the pad 7, can be formed of any suitable fabric found applicable. The sections 8 are secured togetherby stitching not only er;-

tendingthrough said sections,'in proximity to, as at 9, but also transversely of the edge of the pad 7, as at 10, whereby the edge of the latter will be wrapped byspaced lengths of the thread employed for securing the sections together. The stitching is extended onto both faces of the pad 7, at the perimeter thereof, as at 11, 12.

The outer side edge of the pad 7 has a portion thereof flush with the end edge of that terminal portion of the band 1, against which the pad 7 is arranged, and certain of the lengths 9 and 10 of the stitching, as indicated at 13, 141, Figure 3 overlap said end edge and extend through the band 1. Certain of the lengths 9 and 10 of the stitching, at the rear side of the pad 7 indicated at 15, extend through and overlap the band 1, whereby the latter is connected to the rear side of the pad 7. v V

The screws 8, not only provide means for securing the plate 2 to the band 1, but further act to secure the pad 7 to the band 1, as the screws are of a length to extend into the pad 7 to a depth substantially equal to half the thickness of the pad.

Garried by the band 1, is a slidable loop 16, formed of flexible material and which has pivotally connectedto its lower end, as at 17, a buckle 18. Extending from the lower end of the pad 7, and adapted to be adjustably connected to the loop 16, through the medium of the buckle 18, is a breeching strap 19. The forward end terminal portion of the strap 19, is anchored in the pad 7, between a pair of sections 8, by certain of the lengths 9 and 10 of the stitching.

When using the truss, the pad 7 is mounted at the desired position, the strap 19 connected up to the buckle 18 and the band 1 adjusted, and owing to the buckle 6 being carried by the bendable portion of the plate 2 the adjusting of the terminal portion 21 of the band 1, can be had without interfering with the position of the flexible pad 7.

The pad 7, preferably is threequarters of an inch thick throughout and when used lies perfectly flat against the body, does not bulge and is not clumsy to wear, or in other words the pad when worn does not inconvenience the wearer in any manner whatsoever.

It is thought that the many advantages of a. truss constructed in accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is 1-- 1. A truss comprising a waist band, a flexible laminated pad having its outer face secured against the inner face of one terminal portion of said band and having its' laminations formed throughout of like material, said pad depending from said terminal portion, a flexible plate having its inner portion secured to and its outer portion free of the outer face of said terminal portion, a buckle carried by said free outer portion and coacting with the other terminal portion of the band to secure it in position, a breeching strap having its forward terminal portion anchored between a pair of laminiations of said pad at the lower end thereof, and means for adjustably connecting the rear end of said strap to the rear of the band.

2. A truss comprising a laminated pad formed throughout of a series of flexible sections of like size, shape and material secured together by stitching having space-d lengths thereof extending throughout and against the edges of said sections, further extending through said sections in proximity to such edges and further positioned on the marginal portion of the outer face of each of the outer sections of said series.

3. A truss comprising a laminated pad formed throughout of a series of flexible sections of like size, shape and material secured together by stitching having spaced lengths thereof extending transversely throughout and against the edges of said sections, further extending through said sections in proximity to such edges and fur ther positioned on the marginal portion of the outer face of each of the outer sections of said series, and a. band having one terminal portion thereof extending transversely of the outer face of said pad and secured therewith by said stitching.

4. A truss comprising a laminate-d pad formed throughout of a series of flexible sections of like size, shape and material secured together by stitching having spaced; lengths thereof extending transverselyl throughout and against the edges of said sections, further extending through said sections in proximity to such edges and further positioned on the marginal portion of the outer face of each of the outer sections of said series, a band having one terminal portion thereof extending transversely of the outer face of said pad and secured therewith by said stitching, and a breeching strap having its forward terminal portion anchored between the lower end of a pair of said sections by said stitching.
