IMPROVEMENT IN HOG-RINGING NIPPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,125, dated October 20, 1874; application filed May 2, 1874.

Be it known that I, ELIAS BLAIR, of Buoyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hog-Ringing Nippers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my nippers. Fig. 2 is an edge or top View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.

This invention has relation to ring-nippers for ringing hogs; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the jaws between the handles and the pivot which is located at the extreme end of the nippers, as hereinafter more fully described. The object of this invention is to facilitate the ringing operation. Many hogs of such size as to require two men to effect the ringing may, with this invention, be ringed by one, on account of the location and position of the jaws. Moreover, the ring can always be inserted straight instead of obliquely, as is frequently the case with nippers having the jaws arranged at the end on account of the reach required to get the handles in front of and in line with the snout.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the branches of the nippers, pivoted or hinged together at their ends, as shown at b, and provided with the handles 0 of any desired shape and length. D represents the jaws, which are designed to be grooved in the ordinary manner, for the purpose of holding and closing a ring-blank, at, through the snout. These jaws are arranged between the hinge and the handles, and at right angles with each branch, being cast as projections on one or both sides of each. The ring-grooves e are, therefore, arranged transversely, and the back of each jaw is formed by the metal of the branch or shank. When the nippers are thus constructed, the jaws may be located at any required distance from the hinge without increasing the length of the instrument; and, in consequence of the transverse parallel motion of the jaws toward each other, the handles, in operating the ring-blank, need not be so widely separated as those of the ordinary nippers, where the jaws have a pivotal motion. The jaws may be made wide enough to include two or more guide-grooves, of diiferent diameters, for rings of difierent sizes.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Ring-nippers, having lateral jaws with trans verse guide-grooves between the handles and pivot of the nippers, substantially as specified.
