LOUIS H. YOUNGER, 0]?` AUSTIN, TEXAS.
COTTON-PICKERS SACK.
Application led January To all whom it may conoewt:
Be it known that I, Louis H. YouNenR, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Pickers Sacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cotton pickers sacks, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel and simple protector or wear sustaining attachment for that portion of a sack of this character that rests upon and is dragged along-the ground while in use.
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of novel and simple means adapted to permit the protector or wear sustaining attachment to be readily applied to or removed from the sack.
lVith the above and other` objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement ot' parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is atop plan view of a cotton pickers sack embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the cotton pickers sack,
Figure 3 is a detail plan view of the proector or wear sustaining attachment,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a similar view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a similar view taken on the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 designates the upper side, 2 the lower side, and 3 the shoulder strap of a cotton pickers sack embodying my invention.
In accordance with my invention, the lower side of the sack is folded upon itself and stitched as at 4 to provide a plait or attaching element 5 which extends transversely of the sack and which is secured at its ends to the edges of the sack by the stitching securing the lateral edges of the sides 1 and 2 together. This plait or attaching element 5 15, 1925. Serial No. 2,646.
is located adjacent the front end of the sack and provides a pocket 6 which is closed at its front and lateral sides and fully open at its rear side. The plait or attaching element 5 is provided with a plurality of eyelets 7.
'Ihe protector or wear sustaining attachment 8 is made of duck or any other suitable material, and it comprises a body portion 9 and side flaps 10. The body portion 9 is applied against the lower side 2 of the sack, and the flaps 10 embrace the edges of the sack and overlie the upper side 1 thereof. The protector 8 extends from the plait or attaching element 5 to and beyond the closed end of the sack, and due thereto and to the 'fact that the flaps 10 of the protector overlap the edges of the sack, the under side of the sack will not be subjected to wear while the sack is being dragged on the ground. The front end of the protector 8 is reinforced by a fold 11 and by a strip of leather or other suitable material 12 secured beneath the fold. Eyelets 13 are carried by this reinforced end of the protector 8, and Vthis end is adapted to be inserted in the pocket 6, and when this is done the eyelets 13 register with the eyelets 7. A flexible `retainer 14 is threaded through the eyelets 7 and 13 to secure the protector 8 tothe plait 5. The flaps 10 are provided with eyey lets 15, and flexible elements 16 pass through these eyelets to hold the flaps in contact with the upper side of the sack 1. If desired any other .suitable retaining elements `may be used 1n place of the flexible elements 14 and 16.
As the front end of the attachment 8 is secured within the pocket 6, and as the flaps 10 of the attachment embrace the side edges of the sack, there is no possibility of dirt, leaves and the like accumulating between the protector and sack. As the protector underlies that portion of the sack which is dragged on the ground during the operation of picking cotton, there is no possibility of such portion of the sack being subjected to Wear. The means provided for securing the protector 8 to the sack permits the latter to be readily applied or removed, and as the protector is exible it will not interfere with the placing of cotton in the sack or the emptying of the sack.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those While 'Ihave described what I now consider' to be the best embodiment of the invention I desire to have it understood thatthe device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
In combination, a Cotton pickers sack provided with a transversely extending plait,
eyelets carried bythe plait, a protector for the under side of the sack and provided With folds embracing the side edges thereof, one end, of `the protector being positioned beneath the plait, eyelets carried by said end ofthe protector and registering With the eyelets of the plait, a retaining element passi ing through the eyelets, and retaining elements engaging the folds.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
LOUIS II. YOUNGER.
