To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, Jon IVIARTIN Jnz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thrall, in the county of lVilliamson and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Pickers Sacks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cotton pickers sacks, and its primary object is to provide simple, reliable and 'etfi cient means for strengthening and reinforcing the sack and protecting the same from wear by frictional contact with the person of the picker and by contact with the ground, cotton stalks or other extraneous objects with which the sack may come in contact in .the cotton field, or while in course of transportation from place to place.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a cotton pickers sack having strengthening and protecting means lncluding a metallic shield plate detachably secured upon the rear side of the sack so as to lie between the same and the ground, and constructed and arranged to shield the sack from wear by contact with the ground and also to protect the sack from injury by contact with extraneous objects, said shield being detachably supported in positionvso as to admit of its ready and convenient removal when occasion requires.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter. fully "described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. rear elevation of a cotton pickers sack embodying my invention.

Figure 2 is a similar view of a port on of the sack showing the protector flap in normal position.

Figure 3 is a view of a portion of the front side of the sack showing the trans verse connecting strap thereon.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a cotton pickers sack, made of any suitable strong and durable fabric and of oblong rectangular form, as'is customary, said sack having an upper open end or mouth portion 2 and a lower closed end or bottom portion 8, The sack is provided at its upper end with a shoulder strap 4 whereby it is supported upon the person of the picker while in use.

As is well known, sacks of this character vide means whereby the sack may be shielded and protected to a large extent from wear, tear and injury. I

For the purposes described, I provide a metallic shield 5, which is disposed upon the rear side of the sack, said shield being approximately of oblong rectangular form. The shield is arranged in practice to lie in contact with the rear wall of the sack, with its upper edge lying somewhat below the horizontal transverse center of the sack and its lower edge projecting a greater or less distance below the bottom 3 of the sack. The shield may be made of galvanized sheet metal of a desired thickness and of a width to extend approximately across the entire' rear surface of the sack.

For supporting the shield in position, I provide said shield along its upper edge with three equidistantly-arranged openings 6, the central opening being disposed at the center of the, sack and the other openings equidistant-1y on opposite sides thereof, which openings are adapted to receive snap fasteners 7 upon a. similar number of suspending straps 8. These straps are sewed or otherwise secured to the rear wall of the sack at or above the horizontal transverse center thereof and suspend the shield in working position in. an obvious manner. A trans verse strap 9 is sewed or otherwise secured to the front of the sack and is provided at its ends with snap hooks 10 or other suitable connectors, hinged or otherwise flexibly connected with the strap 9,so that they may be swung back against the rear side of the sack. Diametrically disposed openings 11 areprovided in the shield at or about its transverse center to receive the snap hooks or connectors 10, whereby the shield 5 and strap 9 are coupled to strengthen and reinforce the sack against pressure strains and liability of bursting when heavily filled. This connecting means between the strap and the shield further serves to prevent the shield from swinging sidewise on the straps 8 and thereby hold the shield from lateral or sidewise deflection or displacement. The shield 5 may lie at a distance from the rear surface of the sack, and the flexible connection afforded between the front Wall of the sack through the medium of the strap 9 and pivoted con nectors 10 adapts the sack to be filled to a maximum degree without interference, while at the same time the sack will be reinforced against any tendency to become unduly strained or to burst under pressure of a full load of cotton therein.

The sack is provided upon its rear side with a reinforcing and protecting strip 12 of heavy fabric sewed or otherwise secured thereto, and against which strip the straps 8 and their connectors and the upper edge of the shield 5 are arranged to bear. This strip l2 serves to protect the sack from undue wear from the mov'eme'ntsof the parts referred to when the sack is in service. A. flap 13 is also provided upon the rear side of the sack to cover the straps '8 and the connectors 7 and the upper edge portion of the shield This flap is formed of heavy fabric, leather or other suitable material, sewed or otherwise secured at its upper half along its longitudinal and side edges to the rear wall of the sack, leaving the lower half of said flap free so that it may be swung upwardlyto expose the parts 7 and 8 for connection or disconnection of the shield 5 when occasion requires, and so that-said flap may be turned down to overlie the said parts when the sack is in service, as shown in.

This fla'ip 15 serves the double function of protecting the sack from undue Wear by contact with the upper edge of the shield 5 and the ground, the straps 8 and the connectors 7, and also serves to prevent cotton-stalks, trash or other extraneous objects coming in contact with the parts 7 and 8 and becoming entangled therein and causing disruption of said parts, or the collection of such stalks and trash between the shield and the sack, while the sack is being transported through the field or dragged over the surface of the ground in its various manipulation.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that my invention provides a cotton pickcrs sack embodying means, of a simple, reliable and efficient character, for reinforcing and shielding the sack against undue wear and tear in service, and for performing other stated incidental functions, and that the con struction is such as to adapt the shield plate to be readily applied for use and removed whenever required for compact storage or shipment of 'the sack. Other advantages flowingout of the construction disclosed will be apparent from the. foregoing description and readily understood and appreciated by those versed in the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:

In a cotton pickers sack, the combination of a bag or sack, a shield plate disposed upon. the rear side thereof, flexible suspension devices secured to the rear side of the bag and detachably engaging the upper edge of the shield plate, areinforcing band extending transversely across the front of the bag and provided with fastening members 'detachably engaging the side edges of the shield plate, a wear strip positioned upon the rear face of the bag beneath the suspension devices andupper edge of the shield plate, and a flapsecured to the rear side of the bag and adapted to beturned down upon the flexible suspension devices and upper edge of the shield plate.
