Description
B. B. ROGERS.
Curry-Combs.
No.155,977, Patented Oct. 13,1874.
Mill wepi' fume/dam I. PARK FLACEVNYI UNITED STATES CHARLES BUTTERS ROGERS, OF KASOTA, MINNESOTA.
PATENT OEEIeE IMPROVEMENT IN CURRV-COMBS..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,977, dated October 13,1874; application filed J une 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs BUTTERS ROGERS, of Kasota, in the county of Le Sueur and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry- Oombs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-. tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a rotating curry-com b, and in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully-set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my curry-comb, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents an ordina y handle, in the end of which is secured a metal frame, B, of any suitable dimensions. The outer side of the frame B is open, and in the same a shaft or roller, 0, has its bearings. To this roller are secured a series of narrow blades, D D, extending the entire length of the frame, and radiating somewhat like the spokes of a wheel. The outer edges of the blades D D are toothed, as shown. On the back part of the frame 13, or to an arm extending forward from the same, is hinged a plate or apron, G, which is held in proper position by means of a spring,
a, so that, while the comb is being used or drawn forward by the operator, one of the blades D will come in contact therewith, and hold the blades in that position as long as the forward stroke is continued.
When the blades that are in use become filled with hair and dust the operator gives the comb a backward movement over the face of the brush, causing'the roller to turn in the opposite direction. The spring-plate or apron G then rises and allows the blades to pass freely, and causing the hair and dust to fly off from the teeth, leaving the comb cleaned and readjusted.
By this means the comb may be cleaned while passing over the face of the brush commonly used with curry-combs, without jarring or striking it against anything solid, as is now ordinarily done, and whereby the curry-combs are soon injured and destroyed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' The revolving shaft 0, provided with the serrated blades D D D D, combined with the hinged plate G and spring a, all constructed and arranged to permit the shaft to revolve or turn when the curry-comb is pushed, but to prevent said shaft from turning when the comb is pulled toward you, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHAS. BUTTERS ROGERS.
