UNITED STATES FRANK M. GINGER, OF ELDOBADO, KANSAS.
PATENT SIGN.
Application filed May 26,1S25-"SeriatNo. 33,02 8.
Toall whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, FRANK M. GINGER, a
citizen of the United States, residing'at' Eldorado, in the county ofButler and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain improvements in signs and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character embodyingr means whereby the be exposed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my mproved sign whereby certain important ad vantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient andadvantageous for use,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel iea'tures or my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
1n orderthat my invention n'iay be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to de-.
scribe tlie'same with reference to-the accom ianying drawings wherein:
i igure 1 is a view inelevation illustrat ing asign constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a View in side elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in elevation ofthe'sign as disclosed in Figure 1 with the movable or swinging leaf in a second position;
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a view in elevation illustrating a sign. constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention;
Figure 6 is a side elevation of'the struc ture as illustrated in Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a front elevation of the sign illustrated in Figure 5 with the movable or swinging leaf in a second position;
Figure 8 is a view in side elevation of the As disclosed in Figures 1 to 4, 1 denotes positioned outstanding ears 2 through which suitable holding members are adapted to be directed to maintain said plate in applied position as upon the side wall ofa car or a plate of desired dimensions andconfigure ,1 tion and which is provided with the suitably the like. At opposed points the sides of the" plate 1 are'providedv with the outstanding;
flanges orwebs' 3, each of said fiangeslor webs 3 immediately adjacent to the plate l being provided with a slo-t 4 the upper poi tion of which being enlarged to provide a i substantially right triangular opening 5, the
edge of such opening defining the 1liypot-' enuse of such opening beingdisposed onjanf outward and downward incline.
A swinging leaf or plate 6 is employed in" connectionwith the plate 1, said plate 6 being of requisite dimensions and configuration and provided at' one "longitudinal plate 6 which, when the'plate 6 is swung downwardly, are adapted to be receivedwithin the lower or restricted portion of the marginal portion withop'positely disposed outstanding flat arms 7 coplanar with theslot 4 so thatsaid plate,whenin such low:
ered position, is held againstiswinging move- 5 ment. lVhenthe plate 6 is moved' i'ipwardly or a' direction to position" the arms within the enlarged portions-5 of the slots 4 the plate 6 may be swung upwardly and reversed to have close contact with the plate 1 and more especially the upper portion thereof.
The outer or free marginal portion of the plate 6 at substantially the longitudinal I center thereof is provided with a slot 8- dis--' posed at right angles to the axis about'which the plate'6 swings andthe outer end ofthe i 6 slot 8 is continued by a perpendicularlyrd lated extension slot 9, the marginalportion of the plate 6 defining the, outer edge of said extension slot 9having produced'therein a" notch or recess '10 opening into the extension slot 9 andpositioned at one sideof the slot 8. 7
When the plate 6 is swung upwardly an outstanding lug 11 carried by the upper portion of the plate passesthrough the slot 9' and as the arms 7 drop within the lower or restricted portions of the slots 4-sa1d lug ispositioned at the outer end 'of-the slot 8 so that upon lateral or sidewise movement be ing imparted to the plate 6, said lug will be received within the extension slot 9 and when the notch or recess 10 is positioned 7 plate or leaf 6 to bring the lug 11 within above said lug 11, the plate 6 will further drop to permit said lug 11 to be received within said notch or recess whereby the plate when in its upper position is held against lateral movement. The lug 11 is of a length to project beyond the outer face of the plate or leaf 6 when said plate is engaged therewith and the outer end of said lug is provided with a cross head 12 extending in the same general direction as the slot 8 and of a length in excess of the width of the slot 9 sothat at any point along the slot 9 the plate or leaf 6 is held against down-v ward swinging movement. 7
To. facilitate the lateral movement of the the slot 10 an end marginal portion of the plate or leaf 6 is provided with a recess or notch 14 which receives, upon such lateral movement, a portionof a web or flange 3 above the enlarged portion 5 of the slot 4:.
The plate 1 above and below its vertical center is provided with suitable legends or indicia 15 giving desired information while the opposite faces of the plate or leaf 6 are also provided with suitable legends or indicia 16. When the plate or leaf 6 is in its lowered position the lower legend or indicia 15 isconcealed by the plate or leaf 6 with the legend or indicia 16 on a face of said leaf or plate 6 exposed and when the plate or leaf 6 is in its raised position the upper legend or indicia 15 on the plate 1 is concealed and the legend or indicia 16 on the opposed face of the leaf or plate 6 is exposed.
If desired av conventional seal 18 or its equivalent may b'edisposed through the slot 8 and a suitable opening 19 in the plate 1 to further maintain the plate or leaf 6 in its raised position and to provide means to denote unauthorized adjusting of such plate or leaf 6. p Y
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figures 5 to 8, the plate 1' is of suitable design and dimensions and is provided at its lower portion with an out: standing foot or bracket 20 to provide means whereby the plate may be bolted or otherwise secured to a tank car bolster, running board or other desired support. Operatively engaged with the plate 1 is the plate 6, such engagement being substantially the same as hereinbefore particularly recited in connection with the first embodiment of my invention. The upper portion of the plate tension 22 while the opposite end portion thereofis enlarged, as at 23, to permit ready passage therethrough of the head 24; carried by the outer end portion of thelug 25 extending outwardly from the plate 1. When the plate 6 is swung into its upper posiin excess of all portions of the slot 21 with the exception of the inner enlarged por tion 28.
I also find it of particular advantage to provide the leaf or plate 6 or 6 with the suitably positioned slots 26 .to permit the ready application to said leaf or plate of a destination or consignee card as particu-- larly indicated by dotted lines in Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings. I also find it of advantage to provide the adjacent end portions of the plate 1 and the foot or bracket 20 with the reinforcing or strengthening corrugation 27. 5
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a sign constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that'my invention is susceptibleof some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A signal comprising, in combination, a plate provided with spaced outstanding ears,- said ears being provided with slots having corresponding ends enlarged, a second plate having outstanding arms insertible through the slotsof the ears of the first plate, said arms whenwithin the enlarged portions of the slots permitting the second plate to be swung to overlie one or the other end portionof the firstplate, said arms when within the restricted portions of the slots holding the second plate against rotation.
2. A signal comprising, in combination, a plate provided with spaced outstanding ears, said ears being provided with slots having corresponding ends enlarged, a second plate having outstanding arms 1nsert1ble through the slots of the ears of the first plate, said arms when within the enlarged portions of the slots permitting the second plate to be swung to overlie one or the other end portions of the first plate, said arms when within therestricted portions of the slots holding the, second plate against rotation, and
means for holding the second plate against movement when the arms of said plate are engaged within the restricted portions of the slots.
3. A signal comprising, in combination, a plate provided with spaced outstanding ears, said ears being provided with slots having corresponding ends enlarged, a second plate having outstanding arms insertible through the slots of the ears of the first plate, said" arms when within the enlarged portions of the slots permitting the second plate to be swung to overlie one or the other end portion of the first plate, said arms when with portion of the second plate. being provided with a slot, an end portion of the first plate being provided with an outstanding headed lug insertible through the slot of the second plate to hold the second plate in one of its two positions.
In testimony signature.
