To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILMORE FQSPERY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink Pads, of which the following is a specification. l The object of this invention is the production of an efficient, serviceable, convenient, and ornamental, inking pad for rubber and other hand stamps, in which the pad proper comprises a series of preferably connected, reversible, and removable, elements, comprising a-base or board which is not inkabsorbent, over `which an inked ribbon is stretched, which pad, when exhausted of ink, may be re-inked, or discarded and replaced by a new pad. To accomplish this result, I construct this stamp-inking device in the preferred embodiment of my 1nvention, as shown in the drawings, 1n which I Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device;

A, in the drawings designates the base of this device, which is, preferably, rectangular in form and has a top part B, preferablyl smaller in length and width than the base A, and of suitable height. The upper surface of this part B is of such material as to be non-absorbent of ink, thebase A and the part B being preferably of wood, although steel stamping or casting may be resorted to without departing from the scope of my invention. When made of wood, the upper vsurface of the part B is preferably var-r nished, for the object stated.

Supported upon the base A, and over the upwardly-projecting part B, there is re-v movably placed a container C, comprising.

of a length somewhat longer than the corresponding dimension of the part' B. This container is of an inverted, box-shaped con- A tour, the bottom 12 of which has a rectangular cut-out portion 13, or sight, the remaining part of the bottom affording lianges against which the ink pad properl bears.

1 To the container C there is hingedly connected a coverD, there being on said cover, at opposing margins, lugs or ears 15, which lugs are punctured to receive pins 16 engaging the end walls of the container C. The length of these lugs is such that when the cover D is in opened condition and standing at right angles to the base, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the preponderance of weight of the cover causes it to retain the vertical position, the rear margin 17r of the cover in this case bearing against the rear wall of the container C.

In the front and rear walls 18, 19, of this container, there are L-shaped slots 20, af fording, in conjunction with pins 21, a locking meansA known by the term bayonet catch, whereby the container can be removed from the base A by sliding it in the direction indicated by the arrow m, yin Fig. 8, the part B being shorter than the length of the container to permit of this longitudinal movement of the container.

vThe container C is suliiciently deeper than the member B, to afford therein above the part B, and below the inwardly-extending flanges 12, a space in which the inking pad proper, E, is located. This inking pad proper Y'comprises one or more plates 23, preferably made of cardboard of proper thickness, which board is, preferably, rendered non-absorbent of ink by suitable treatment; and it is of a length and width to l'lt into 'the container, by an easy fit. Over this board 23, there is trained or stretched an inked ribbon 24, said ribbon being, preferably, wound lengthwise around the board 23, and of one or more layers.

rEhe Container with its @over is preferably mede in sheet metal, which at once cheap, and which lends itse admirably ornamentation in anyv ot the well-known pi es'ses ot eleetroplating, japanning', ete., 'and thereby produces a verf; ormnnentnl article. It is a well-known tact that rubber, and other lnind. stamps when being inked by being pressed upon an inked rilfbon prop eilj,v cushioned instead ot an iijiliing pad, the inain portion 0i2 whieli Yfelt saturated with ink, ntl'ord a inneh cleaner and clearer iinpression, and that the objeetional Vfeature of re-inking is avoided in my device, when the exhausted pads are discarded.
