UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo WILLIAM MASON, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINDLE-STEPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,878, dated October 13, 1874; ap plica-tion filed March 26, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MASON, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spindle-Steps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the Same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in providing a spindle-step with an oilcylinder of peculiar construction, the same being adapted to prevent effectually the entrance of dust, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved step, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a spindle of the usual construction, provided with the foot a and whirr a', as shown. B represents the step, constructed of the usual or any other proper material, which has attached to it the oil-cylinper b, as shown. This cylinder extends above the step as far as is possible without touching the whirr when the spindle is in position, as shown in the drawings, and it is provided at its upper end with an outwardly-turned lip or ange, w.
The operation will be readily1 understood from the foregoing description.
The entran ce of dust is efectually prevented by the outwardly-turned lip or ange a: and its proximity to the lower face of the whirr, as it serves to direct the currents of ascending air produced by the rapidly-revolving whirr away from the open space between the lower space of the whirr and the upper' edge of the cylinder, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2.
The construction described is exceedingly simple, and yet well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cylinder b, provided with the outwardly turned iiange fr, in combination with the spindle A, having the whirr ct, the whirr and flange being located in.olose proximity to each other, as and for the purpose described.
This speciiication signed and witnessed this 17th day ot' February, 1874.
VWM. MASON.
