IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTCM FRAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,866, dated October 13, 1874; application filed January 31, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS N. FROST, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottom Frames, of which the following is a specifica- JDion:

In my improved bed-bottom frame the end rails consist of a straight wooden bar and a curved sheet-metal plate secured to said bar, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of one end of a bed-bottom frame as it appears when unmounted, and which em bodies my invention; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same shown in the position Vit assumes when mounted.

My improved bed-bottom frame is designed for use in connection with any suitable fabric, cords, or wire, which is strained taut between the end rails by means of springs or other powerful strain. In this class of bed-bottoms as ordinarily7 made the end rails spring inward at the middle of their length, so as to cause the middle portion of the fabric to bag.

The object of my invention is to avoid this objectionable bagging, and to cause the fabric to be strained uniformly throughout the whole width of the bed.

I form the end rail of astraight bar of wood, A, and a metal plate, B, the inner edge of which plate is provided with a series of small holes to which to secure the springs or the fabric. The plate B is also swaged or curved edgewise in such a direction that the holes are upon the inner edge of the curve, and this plate is rigidly secured,by means of screws or other suitable fastening, to the wooden bar A. The ends of the end rails so formed are then secured, by means of bolt-s, screws, or in any proper manner, to the ends of the side r'ails C C, whereby said rails form a square frame. The inner edges of the curved plates B B are so placed upon the frame that their curved inner edges face each other, as partially shown in Fig. 1. These rails A B are then strained in the act of securing the fabric by means of the springs a or other pressure, which so springs the end rail A B, between their two ends, as to curve the wooden barA and straighten the curved plate B, as shown in Fig. 2.

In this position the distance between the edges of the plates is uniform throughout the whole width of `the frame, and if the springs are of uniform strength the strain is uniform in all parts of the bed-bottom, and thereby the bagging of the fabric is prevented.

As a substitute for the curved plate B, two plates of one-half the length of B, with their meetin g-ends abutted closely together, and secured rmly upon the rail A, so as to assume a similar form to that of the plate B, may be used, and the effect or result will be the same.

I claim as my invention- In abcd-bottom frame of the class described, the end rail formed of the straight wooden bar A and the curved plate B, rigidly secured together, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
