Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17,1918.
Application filed January 22, 1918. Serial No. 213,195.
To all whom it ma fi concern:
Be it known t at I, JosEPH H. VVIOK- STROM, a citizen of the United States, re-
' siding at Beresford, in the county of Union and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates and consists in the provision of a simple and efficient gate having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in g the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
1 illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view through one end of the gate, and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing a slightly modified form of the enlarged gate, and Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of a slight modified form of the gate.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
A, A designate the longitudinal and parallel bars of the gate, which may be of any suitable size and material, and B designates the vertical end pieces of the gate which are reinforced by the metallic plates C each of which is bent at right angles at D and eX- tend over the top of the gate and held to the end piece by means of a suitable bolt E. Vertical pieces F, F are passed alternately between the longitudinal bars A, preferably at the longitudinal center of the gate, and which cause the bars to be sprung out, as shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and ferrules H are placed intermediate the two stripsF and space the same apart. Bolts I,
or other suitable fastening means, are passed through the several bars and vertical piece and hold the same securely in place. Rods K and K are connected at their adjacent ends to'a coiled spring J and one end of the rod K is fastened to one of the vertical end pieces of the gate, while the other rod K is connected to a hook N, adapted to engage one or another of the perforations 0 formed in the longitudinal bar of the gate, and which spring and rods tend to keep the gate from sagging, the tension of the spring being regulated by adjusting the hook N in one or another of the perforations O.
In the modified form in the drawings it will be noted that the vertical pieces intermediate the ends of the gate are duplicate where the gate is of considerable size and requiring further reinforcement.
By the provision of a gate made in accordance with my invention it will be noted that the horizontal bars are reinforcedand held rigid while'the gate is prevented from sagging by employment of the tension means.
lVhat I claim to be new is:
l. A gate made up of longitudinal bars spaced apart, vertical pieces passing alternately between the bars intermediate the ends of the gate, and spacing ferrules intermediate said pieces, fastening means passing through the latter and said bars and ferrules, and tension means for preventing the gate from sagging.
2. A. gate made up of longitudinal bars spaced apart, vertical pieces passing alternately between the bars intermediate the ends of the gate, and spacing ferrules intermediate said pieces, fastening means passing through the latter and said bars and ferrules, a rod fastened to one end of the gate, and a second rod adjustably connected to the lower portion of the gate diagonally opposite one of the first referred to bars of the gate, and aspring connecting the adjacent ends of the gate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH H. VVICKSTROM.
