Description

DARLINGTON.
Wire Fences Patented Aug. 11, 11874.
- INVENTOR WITNESSES THE GRAPHIC CILPHTOLITHJSSr 4| PARK PLACLMK,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HILLBOBN DARLINGTON, OF CONCORD TOWNSHIP, DELAWARE COUNTY, PA.
IMPROVEMENT lN WIRE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,024, dated August 11, 1874; application filed July 8, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILLBORN DARLINGTON, M. D., of Concord township, in the county of Delaware and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Making Barwaysin Wire Fences, also in attaching wires wherever they are required to be kept tight and regulated to suit expansion and contraction; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consistsin the mode of connecting and tightening the wires of wire fences, and making bars or gaps in the same, as will be described.
In the annexed figure, which is a perspective of my invention, A represents the fenceposts, through which pass the wires B B. Loops are formed in the ends of the wires to be connected. The loops of one set of wires are caught into an eye in a lever, 0, near its center. This lever has teeth or notches formed on it near one end and a portion of its length,
and at the other end is made a hook, as seen at d. The lever being connected to one set of the wires, the loops of the other set are caught over the teeth or in the notches, as seen at c. a
The lever is then pressed down until its hook 01 will catch upon the wire B, and thus hold it in position. By looping the wires nearer to the end of lever C a longer gap can be closed up.
By the use of suitable intermediate wires gaps or bars can be made and closed up quickly, and the wires made perfectly tight or loosened in a moment of. time.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fence-wire looped at intervals and stretched by means of the hooked and ratcheted lever permanently united therewith, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of May, 1874.
