Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
FRANCIS E. LORD AND HERMAN K. BLANCHARD, OF BEADSBOROUGH, VT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 155,530, dated September 29, 1874; application filed .May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS E. LORD and HERMAN K. BLANGHARD, of Eeadsborough, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the fol lowing is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved bed-bottom, taken on the line a; as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7
A is the frame, composed of the side rails B- B and cross-bars D D. E represents the'slats, and F the spring. This spring is made of spring-wire. The ends of the wire, after passing through the cross-rail, are bent upward and parallel with theslat, then pass through the slat, as seen in Fig. 1. The other portion of the wire is carried under the cross-rail, and forms a loop, H, over the slat, as seen in Fig. 2. The spring is made of a single piece of wire, the formation of which is shown in Fig. 1, where one-half of it is seen. Before passing into the.
slat the part G is bent so as to be parallel with the slat, and so that the slat rests upon it, and is raised up and supported above the cross-bar, as seen. The slatpasses beneath the loop H, which binds the end down, and being thus fastened at each end, the slat is maintained in a crowning position, as seen in Fig. 1, while retainin g the necessary elasticity. The slat being held in this position, it cannot sag at the center like the slats of ordinary spring bedbottoms.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with cross-bar D and slats E, of the wire-sprin gs F, having median parts H resting on slat, and each end passed around under cross-bar, then through it, and, finally, bent over, made parallel with and carried up through the slat, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
FRANCIS E. LORD. HERMAN K. BLANCHARD.
