Be it known that i Joan" Wilmin ton ii citizen of the United States, residing in l llizaheth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful llnl'irovenients in Typewriting lilachines, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
This invention relates to sound-deadening devices for typewritinp; machines, and comprises, a casing which encloses the soundproducing parts of the machine, while permitting the ordinary typingoperations to he carried on. For this purpose, the casing comprises a body-part and a cover-part, the hotly-part enclosing all ot the typewritin z; machine with the exception of the forward extension in. which are positioned the banks of typewriter keys.
The cover extends from the trout to the rear of the hody-part to completely close the latter at the top. The front edge of the cover-part forms with the body-part a slot through which the various carriage operating levers may extend to be operable ti-our outside the casino. Ordinarily, to provide access to the mechanism at the top of the machine, as for the purpose of 111- serting or adjusting worksheets around the platen, it would be necessary to swing the cover-part out of the way untll the forward edge thereof was clear of the top of the body-part. This would necessitate swinging the cover-part through a comparatively great distance. It is a feature otthis invention to provide a cover-part which need he swung through only a comparatively small distance to allow access to the top of the machine. 7 This feature is particularly desirable where the typewriting machine is provided with a collating table which projects upwardly and necessitates considerable clearance space to the rear thereof in order to permit access to the paper-table at the rear of the carriage for insertion of worksheets. For this purpose, the cover-part is constructed in two parts, one of which swings forwardly and the other rearwardly, so that each part uncovers half of the bodypart at the top. In this manner the inconvenience of moving a single-piece cover too far to the rear is avoided, and, by the above construction, the parts of the cover are more readily accessible at all times. Said parts also counterbalance each other, thus eliminating the use of counterbalance springs usually employed with a one-piece cover.
A further feature of this invention is a connection between the parts or the cover Wherehy swinging of one part to open or cl sod position by the operator will cause the other part to swing simultaneously'to corresponding open or closed position.
Suitable means is provided to determine the open positions ot the cover sections.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

For deadening the sounds arising in the typing operation, there is provided a sounddeadening casing comprising a body-part 3O and a top or cover-part indicated generally at 82. Said body-part has a rear wall 3:5, side walls 84, lateral extensions 35 on said i w l ov w ich ai carr e it ra e machinemay be positioned relatively to the casing by holes 40 in. a plate 40 extending from side to side at the bottom*of-* the cas ing, said holes receiving the rear feet of the machine.

Further, it would be necessary to swing the cover rearwardly until the free edges thereof were considerably behind the collatingtable, so as to perinit a work-sheet to be freely inserted behind the platen and said collating table. the collating table were 'ofa height greater than that of the one shown herein, it would obstruct the cover and keep it from being opened. To avoid theabove-mentioned difficulties, the coverpart is constructed in the two sections 41 and 42 both pivotally mounted on the bodypart and having their meeting edges sub stantially equidistant fromthe front and rear edges of the body-part. By swinging one part forwardly and the other part rear wardly, th e entire top of the machine may be uncovered, the rearward part moving but a, fraction of the distance ordinarily reuired bv the sin le- 31808 cover. The forward section 41 is preferably in the form of a frame having a, front wall 49 and depending' side walls 50 overlapping the sides of the body-part and pivoted thereon, said front wall being provided with a window "51 to permit the machine in the interior of the casing to be viewed. It is desirable to provide means whereby swinging of the forward section 41 forwardly will sii'nultaneously swing the rear section 42 rearwardly. For this purpose, any suitable connection may be provided, there being herein shown a link 65 connectedat one end to'one side wal1'50 of the section 41, and atthe other end to an ear 66 on the corresponding side wall 56 of the section 42. The link is attached to side wall 50 in such manner that swinging the section 41 forwardly will draw said link forwardly and upwardly, and hence draw ear 66forwardly and upwardly to swing section 42 rearwardly. This linkage may be duplicated at the other side of the casing to provide an easier lifting action. The weight of the forward and rearward parts tends to hold these parts in closed position until the forward part is drawn forwardly. It will be seen that the link 65 and the side Wall 50 with which it is connected form substantially a toggle between the pivot 41 and the pivot at the rear end of link 65, and that when the toggle is straight the rear section will be locked in closed position. For convenience in swinging the forward part it may be provided with a finger-piece 70.
To limit the open positions of the cover sections, there may be provided a stop to be engaged by the ear or arm 66 of the rear section 42. As shown in Figure 2, the front section 41 is overbalanced to so great an extent as to render certain the holding of the rear section 42 in open position.
It will be understood that by constructing the cover with two pivoted sections, connected to each other to swing simultaneously to open and closed positions, it may be more readily manipulated, since the sections have a. tendency to counterbalance each other, thus avoiding the necessity of separate devices, such as springs, which are usually employed to assist in swinging the cover to, open position when the cover is made of one 'piece. I
.The casing may be lined with any 'suitable kindof sound-deadening material.
Variations maybe resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may beused without others.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim;
1. A combined sound-deadening casing and typewrit'ing machine having a carriage, said casing including a body-part; and said carriage having ,paperecontrolling means in eluding an auxiliary device risingfrom said carriage substantially above said body-part,

A con'ibined sorind-deadening casing and typewriting machine having a carriage, said casing including a vbody-part, and said carriage having papencontrolling means ineluding an auxiliary device rising from said carriage substantially above said body-part, a top for said body-part comprisinga section in rear of said auxiliary paper device and hinged to the body-part and having a rear wall and side walls, and a section in front of said auxiliary device and having a forwardly and downwardly inclined window and side walls pivoted on the body-part, and connections between the front section and rear section to cause them to move simultaneously to open or closed positions, said connections serving to lock the rear section in closed position when the front section is in closed position.
3. A combined sound-deadening casing and typewriting machine having a carriage, said casing including a body-part, and said carriage having paper-controlling means including an auxiliary device rising from said carriage substantially above said body-part, a top for said body-part comprising a section in rear of said auxiliary paper device and hinged to the body-part and having a rear wall and side walls, and a section in front of said auxiliary device and having a forwardly and downwardly inclined window and side walls pivoted on the body-part, and a toggle connection between the front section and the rear section to cause simultaneous movement to open or closed positions and straight when the sections are closed to lock the rear section in closed position.
4. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a traveling carriage, a platen thereinand a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said casing comprising body-part having a rear wall and side walls, and said collating table rising substantially above said body-part, and a cover for said body-part to receive said collating table and includinga-front section pivoted to said body-part, said cover closing over the upper end of said collating table and at the sides.
5. A sound-deadening casing for atypewriting machine having a traveling carriage, a platen therein and a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said casing com prising a body-part having a rear wall and side walls, and a cover for said body-part to receive said collating table, said cover comprising front and rear sections pivotedto said body-part at the front and rea1',:respectively, and meeting at the top over the upper end of said collating table and overlapping at the sides along lines substantially parallel to said collating table.
6. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame, a traveling carriage thereon, a platen in said carriage and an upwardly-projecting' collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said casing comprising a body-part to receive the frame and having arear wall and side walls, and a cover having a rearsection with a rear wall hinged at its lower edge to the rear wall of the body-part and extending upwardly and forwardly to a position above and adjacent the upper edge of saidcollzding table, and side walls having their forward edges extending downwardlysubstantially parallel to the collating table, and a front section having a ceiling extending downwardly and forwardly to the front of the body-part and side walls to engage the side walls of the rear section, and having downward extensions so pivoted tothe side walls of the body-part that the front section may be swung, lower edge foremost, down at the front of the body-part.
7. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame, a traveling carriage thereon, a platen in said carriage and an upwardly-projecting collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said casi 11g comprising a body-part to receive the frame and having a rear wall and side walls, a cover having a rear section with a rear wall hinged at its lower edge to the rear wall of the body-part and extending upwardly and forwardly to a position above and adjacent the upper edge of said collating table, and a front section having a ceiling extending; downwardly and forwardlyto the front of the body-part, and having downward extensions so pivoted that the front section may be swunglower edge foremost, down at the front of the body-part, and a connection between the front and rear sections of the cover to cause simultaneous swinging of the front and rear sections to and from their closed positions. y

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a frame, a traveling carriage thereon, a platen in said. carriage and an upwardly-projecting collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said casing comprising a body-part to receivetho frame and having a rear wall and side walls, a cover having a rear section with a rear wall hinged at its lower edge to the rear wall of the body-part and extending upwardly and forwardly to a position above and adjacent the upper edge of said collating table, andside walls having their forsimultaneous swinging of the front and rear sections to and from their closed positions, said connection comprising a link at one side of the casing pivoted at its forward end to the corresponding side wall of the front section of the cover, and at the other end to a downward extension of the corresponding side wall of the rear section.

A combined typewritlng machine and sound-deadening casing therefor, said casing comprising a body and a top portion, said typewriting machine comprising a carriage having paper-controlling means including a part which rises substantially above the body of the casing, said top extending up from said body and closing over said rising part, and including a front window portion supported to swing bodily forwardly and downwardly off from said casing.

A. combined typewriting machine and sound-deadening casing therefor, said casing comprising a body and a top portion, said typewriting machine comprising a carriage having paper-controlling means including a part which rises substantially above the body of the casing, said top extending up from said body and closing over said rising part, and including a front window portion supported to swing bodily forwardly and downwardly off from said casing, said top also comprising a rear portion which is supported to swing rearwardly; and connections between said top portions for causing them to move together in opposite directions into open and closed positions.

In a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and a finger-piece projecting forwardly therefrom, said casing comprising a body-part having a rear wall, side walls and a front closure-plate, a cover comprising a front section forming with said frontclosureplate a slot through which said fingerpiece projects, and pivoted on the body-part to be swung, forward edge foremost, down at the front of the body-part, and a rear section hinged to the rear wall of the bodypart, and a connection between said sections for opening and closing the rear section by opening and closing the front section.

A combined sound-deadening casing and typewriting machine having a traveling carriage, a platen therein and a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said casing comprising a body-part having a rear wall and side walls, and said collating table rising far above said body-part, and a cover extending upward from both front and rear and comprising a frontwindow section and a rear section, both sections hinged to the body part and closing over said collating table.

A combined sound-deadening casing and typewriting machine having a traveling carriage, a platen therein and a collating table at the delivery side of the platen, said casing comprising a body-part having a rear wall and side walls, and said collating table rising far above said body-part, and a cover extending upward from both front and rear and comprising a front window section and a rear section, both sections hinged to the body-part and closing over said collating table, said front section hinged 'to swing forwardly off from the casing, and said rear section hinged to swing rearwardly. let. A combined sound-deadening casing and typewriting machine having a frame, a traveling carriage thereon, a platen in said carriage and an upwardly-projecting papertable on said carriage, said casing including a body-part to receive the frame and a rear top portion extending upwardly and for wardly adjacent said collating table, and a front top portion having a window eXtending downwardly and forwardly and having downward extensions so pivoted to the bodypart that the front section may be swung down at the front of the body-part.
15. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body and a two-part cover, the forward part supported to swing forwardly and downwardly and bodily below the top of the casingbody, and connections between the parts for constraining them to move together in opposite directions into open and closed positions, said connections including a toggle-joint, straight when the parts are closed.
