TY-PEWRITI-NG IKAOHINE.
Application filed July 18,
1 '0 all whom. it may concern: I
Be it known that l, JOHN WALnHniM, a citizen of the United States, .residing in Elizabeth, in thecounty of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvei'nents in Typewriting Machines,of which the followingis aspecifioa-tion.
This invention relates to sound-deadening hoods crossings fortypewriting machines of the same general type shown in my application, Serial No, 466,820, filed at, i921,- and in the application of 'B. C. Stickney, fiierial no. 9,617, filed December 10, 1920.
The invention comprises ahood having a body part and a cover part; hinged to. said body part, said body part. having anopening in the front thereof large enough to perm-it a typewriting machine to be inserted into: the casing, a front plate being mounted on the body part toclose theft-Ont opening.
It .is one feature of this invention to provide a hood or casing which shall efi'ectii'ely deaden sounds pnoduced by. the machine during the typing ope-ration. For this purpose, the body part and thecover part each comprise pa allel, spaced walls, so that sounds striking the inner wall must pass an air space before reaching the. outer wall, said air space acting as a cushioning means to deaden the vibrations. The bodypart and the cover part are each preferably separate closed units, and each of said units maybe constructed of two substantially similar members, one slightly larger: than the other, so that one fits within the other and is separated therefrom by an air space. Thus, the body part comprises substantially two similar members, each of which has substantially the shape of the complete body part, but one of which is smaller than the other to enable it to fit therein. Similarly, the cover part comprises substantially two similar members of slightly different sizes fitted one it hin the other and separated by an air space. The similar iii-embers of both the body part and the co-ver'partmay be assembled by sliding one member vertically into the other.
The walls of the body part and the-cover part are-provided with corrugations or in dentations which strengthen the surface of the casing, fastening means passing. through the inueutations of the Walls to grip the inner and outer walls without unduly (Us 1921. Serial No. 485,521.
fastening-nieans passingf'through the walls and through a pad of sound-deadening ma'terial. The pads are positioned in recesses in' the inner members and are thus held in pos tion]- while the members'of each; part are assembled by sliding one member into 'the' other.
v p The inner and the outer members of bo-uf w the cover part and the body part may be construotcd preferably by overlappi-ngplates riveted together, the inner and outer m'embers of each part being connected at then outer ends to form closed containers. For this purpose, the inner members and the outer members may each be provided at their upper or lower endswith flanges which oyerlap the edges of the other member to close the upper or lower openings between the walls. To close the openings at the front side edges, where the inner and outer members terniii'iate, there may be provided anaddition-al flange on one of the members adjacent one side edge and overlapping sideedge of the other member.
lVhen the soun'd-deadeningcasing is plied to the machine, it is. found that the the
front wall of. the body part extendsupward- 'ly to a point in proximity to the marginstops on an ordinary Underwood standard typewritmg mach ne. To allow easier access to the margin-stops, platen-rotating means and other mechanism associated with i the typewriter carriage, the upper portionof the frontrplate of the body part is hinged so that. it may be swung to lowered position, thus providing a larger spaceat the front of the machine in the vicinity of the car ri'age. -Means' are provided whereby the raising of the cover wlllcause the simultano'ous lowering of the hingedportion' of the front plate To aid the cover in its upward movement, there is' provided a linkage between the body part and the cover. It 1 a feature of this invention to connect the means for lowering the hinged portion of the cover with the cover-opening linkage, so that, when the cover is raised, the hir ed portion of the front. plate will be swung to lowered or ineffective position. The hinged portion at the front of the body part is normally pressed upwardly and rearwardly to raised or effective position by means of springs, said springs restoring the hinged part to its normal position when the cover is lowered and the means which operated to swing the hinged portion downwardly to lowered position is withdrawn.
In another form of the invention, there may be used, instead of the pads as spacers between the walls of the body part and the cover, sheets of sound-deadening material, such as felt, cardboard or any other suitable sound-deadening material, extending between said walls, thus forming t hree plies and double air chambers in all of the walls.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an Underwood standard typewriting machine with the sound-deading casing or hood applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the cover of the casing in raised position. I
Figure 3 is a side view, vertically sectioned, of the device shown in Figure 1 and showing the structure of the walls of the casing.
Figure f is a front view, partly sectioned vertically, of the body part and cover part, said parts being disassembled.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the device as shown in Figure 1, partly in section, the cover part having been removed.
Figure 6 is a sectional side view of the cover, showing the arrangement of the threeply walls.
Figure 7 is a sectional plan view of one end of the body part of the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 6.
The Underwood standard typewriting machine comprises a main frame 10, which may be supported upon a base 11 by supporting feet 12, said frame having a forward extension 13, in which are positioned banks of keys 14C to operate type-bars, not shown, and cause types carried by said type-bars to print against a platen 15, journaled in the end walls 16 of a platen-fral'ne 17. Said platen-frame forms part of a carriage 19 mounted for letter-feeding movement upon a front rail 20 and arear rail 21 fixed to the main frame. The carriage comprises various forwardly and downwardly-extending operating members, such as the carriagerelease lever 22, the carriage-return fingerpiece 23, and the line-space handle 2 1, said carriage-release lever being guided in its movements by a bracket 25 fixed to the carriage-return finger-piece 23.
For deadening the sounds arising in the typing operation, there is provided a hood or casing having a body part and a cover part or cover 31 hinged at 32 to said body part. The body part comprises a rear wall 35, side walls 36, and a front wall in the form of two end portions 37, said portions being spaced laterally to provide an opening through which the machine may be inserted into the casing, said machine being positioned within said casing by abutments fixed to the rear wall 35 and contacting with the rear posts of the main frame 10. hen the machine is so positioned within the casing, the forward extension 13 projects forwardly from the front wall of the casing. For closing all of said front opening not occupied by the forward extension, there is provided a front plate 4-1 which is mounted upon the portions 37 by means of hooks 42 projecting between said portions and engaging pins or studs as fixed to the portions 3?, said hooks being fixed to front slides 39 mounted upon the front plate 4C1 by means of studs 1 1 which guide said slides in their upward movement, said'slides having fingerpieces -15, whereby they may be raised to release hooks from pins -13, or lowered to cause said. hooks to engage said pins.
The machine is then enclosed at the rear, sides, and front, and, to enclose the machine at the top, there is provided the cover 31 having a rear wall 50, a top wall 51 provided with a transparent plate 52'to permit the interior of the casing to be viewed, said rear and top walls forming a ceiling for the cover part, a front wall 53 terminating above the front plate 41, and side walls 58. A space or slot is thus provided between the lower edge of wall 53 and the upper edge of plate 41, through which the various carriage-operatinglevers extends. To close all of the slot not actually occupied by these levers, there is provided a set of co-operating cushions 54 and 55, each of said cushions comprising folds or loops of sound-deaden ing material, such as plush, felt, or soft leather, the two-ply mar ins of said loops being clamped between bars 56 to form a unit, one of which is mounted on the front wall 53, so that cushion 5% extends downwardly, and the other of which is mounted on front plate etl, so that cushion extends upwardly, said cushions contacting to close the slot. The cover may be raised by means of a linger-piece 57 and swung about hinge 32 to permit acces to the machine. To aid in raising the cover, there may be provided a linkage comprising a bell-crank 6O pivotally mounted on the side wall of the body part, one arm 61 of said bell-crank being connected to one end of a link 62 pivotally mounted on the cover at To another arm of said bell-crank is attached one end of a spring 66, the other end of which is connected to a bracket 64 fixed on the side wall of the casing' The spring normally apparent that, Wheiithe cover is lower arn'i and link willm'oye rear'w y, and the forward end o'tlinlr75 willbe wlith- *rint springs tendsto rotate thebelI-Qrank, so thatarmthe cover is limited bya t'lillCldLLll'l 68 con pin 69*lixed to" the side of taeting with the p the body part. It will be understood that the cover-opening linkage may be duplicated at the other side of the casing.
It will'be" seen that the front plate l1,
with its attaehed cu shion 55, extends upwardly to about themiddle of the platen or on a line-with the margin-stops'ZO; 7 To permit greater access to these margin-stopsand to the platen-rotating knobs 71, as well as to: other mechanism associated with the carriage, it is desirable: that the front plate terminate some distance below thema-rginstews.- To maintain the slot initelose'd osition, and stillprovide the necessary space to allow access to the carriage mechanism, the front plate isprovided!with a hinged portion 72, whichrinay be swung about a hinge'i but which is normally pressed up- "ward'ly' intoslot-closing position by springs.
74' (Figure v I,
It is desirable that'cthe hinged portion '72 shall be loweredsimultaneously'with the opening of the cover andwithout an 'additional operation; For thispurpose, there is provit ed a link 75 guided for movement on the side of the body partby a headed stud 76 ogeratingin-a slot 7'5 in said link said link being connected to the branch or arm- 65 of the bell-crank. As previously described, upon opening-the cover, the arm 65 moves forwardly, and, hence link 75 will move forwardly, so that the'forward endxot I said link, which contactsqw than abutment or extension v7 8 oni the hinged portion, Will press forwardly against said abutment to swing the hinged portion forwardly and downwardly to loweredposition (Figure against the action ot'springs 7 L. It'will be drawn from abutinent'TSfto pei T l to swing the hingedportion upwardly and rearwardly to eti ective orslot-olosing position. A link 75' may be provided at each side'of the casingit' a cover-opening linkage is mounted at each side.
To further deaden'the sounds" arising in thetyping operatioinboth the body part and the cover part comprisedouble walls spaced apart, so that sounds'whiclr-are transmittied" by the innerwall must pass through the space between the walls before reachingthe" outer wall,-thus effectively deadening the erably Similarly, the outerbody part 81' comprises Qare providedwith indented s-i co-operating with the ir'i' den outer body part, so that, when the'p'arts I are assembled, the pads: m ybe placed in the "recesses of the inner l'a'odyfpart before sounds; For this purpose, the body-part and the cover part each comprise'two similar members, one smaller than the'other and fitted within'th'e other, the inner member of; eaeh part being spaced from the: outer member; Thus, the body part coni'prises an inner member or inner body partand an aid inner member comprising anin'ner rear wall outer member or outer body part '81,
83, (Figures 3 and 5), inner side members 84,- (Figures at and 5), and inner front por tions" 85 (Figure 5), said i" her rear wall, side members, and tront'port'ions beingpre'l separate plates riveted together:
an outer rear-wall 86,- outer side members 87,
and outer front portions88, said outer rear wall,- side members,- and front portions being preferably riveted together in a manner similar to themnerbody part. Theinn'er body part is provided on" its upper edges with fla ng'es 89 to overlie the corresponding upper edgesof-the outer body'part, and the outer body part is providedon its lower edges with flanges-90, upoir'whiehrest the lowerjedges of the' inner bodypart' To assemble the body'part,therefore,- it is only necessary to slide the inner body part downwardly into the outer body part,"until the flanges 89' rest upon the upper edges'ofthe outer body pa'rt,-'and the lower edges of' the inner body part rest upon the flanges 90 of the outerbody part. To close the openings between the inner a'n :l "outerbody parts at the front, along the front-side edges, one oi? said body parts (here shown as theouter body part) may be provided with flanges to overlie the-side-edges of the other body The walls otthe inner and outer ,parts are provided with co-oper'atingcorrugations or indentations 92 to strengthen the' walls, and [fastening members 93 are" passed through these walls-to-holtl the walls together and-are countersunk intheme-em ta-tions, There are interposed betweenthe walls to keepthem spaced from' each other, sound-deadening Washers orpads 9 L, throughwluch the fastening DIQIK'ElJGl'S' ray.
be passed Said pads are seated in recesses 95in the walls of the inner boda part, and
itis slid down into the outer part; the indented surfaces 96 of the pads sliding alongthe indentations 92 of theouter wall during the assembling of the body part.
The corrugations ori'ibs 92 co-operate with the inner andouter wa l-ls to form a n'ultiplioity or sound-deadenin air-pockets;
Similarly, the'ooyer part Bl'cmnprises an I inner member 100 and an outer member 101, said members being similar in shape; but
the inner member being somewhat smaller, so that it may fit within the outer member and be spaced therefrom. The inner member 100 comprises an inner rear and top wall, or ceiling, 102 and inner side Walls 103, while the outer cover part comprises an outer rear and top wall, or ceiling, 104 and outer side walls 105 (Figures 3 and 4). Both the inner and the outer cover parts are cut out to provide the necessary opening for the transparent plate 52. The inner cover part is provided, at its lower rear edge, with flanges 106, so that, when the inner and outer cover parts are assembled, the inner cover part need only be inserted upwardly within the outer cover part, or the outer cover part moved downwardly over the inner cover part until the bottom edges of the outer cover part rest upon the flanges 106. The inner and outer cover parts are provided with indentations or corrugations 107 similar to the indentations 92 of the body part, and are similarly fastened by bolts or rivets 108 similar to rivets 93, passing through the indentations in the inner and outer walls of the cover part and through pads 109 of sound-deadening material, similarly seated in recesses in the inner cover part.
Instead of pads 94, there may be used to space the inner and outer members and 81 from each other, sheets 110 which may be composed of felt, cardboard, leather, or any other sound-deadening material, said sheets extending parallel with the inner and outer members, as indicated in Figure 7. In a similar way, the inner and outer members 100 and 101 of the cover part may be spaced from each other by sheets 111. With this arrangement, it will be seen that there are provided two chambers and three parallel layers in each wall of the body part and the cover part of the casing, thus adding to the sound-deadening effect of the casing.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
