SILENCING DEVICE FOR TYPEWRITERS.

This invention relates to silencing devices for typewriters or similar machines and its primary object is to provide a cover of simple construction which encloses the portion of the platen of a typewriter at which. the paper is struck by the keys and thereby 1 deadens the sound of the contact which is frequently a source of annoyance to persons working or conversing in the vicinity of the machine.
In order to effectively mufiie the sound made by the -keys in the operation of the machine, it is essential that the cover which encases the place at which the keys make their impression on the paper, be extended to close the openings which expose the keys at the top and the front of the frame of the machine, and it is another object of the invention to provide a sound deadening contrivance of the above described character which is readil detached from the machine to which it is applied, to give access to the keys and the therewith co-operating parts of the mechanism, for cleaning or repairs.
It is evident that the form of the sound deadening device must be varied in order to adapt the invention for use on different makes of typewriters and it is a further object of the invention to provide a cover of the kind hereinabove described which is capable of following the upward movement of the platen in machines in which the operator changes from characters of the lower case to characters of the upper case by adjustment of the platen instead of by shifting the basket of keys as in other machines.
It is well known that many machines especially those of modern type, have sound deadening covers or panels to enclose the sides and bottom of the frame and I desire it understood that my invention does not interfere with the application of such devices but is in fact, an auxiliary thereto in that it aids to completely muflie the sounds made in the operation of the machine.
An embodiment of my invention in a plurality of forms adapting it for use in connection with different makes of typewriting machines, has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- F igure 1 represents a front elevation of a typewriting machine'to which my invention is applied;' Figure 2-, the same;

The machine chosen to illustrate the em bodimentof my invention in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, is that known by the trade-name Royal, while the machines shown in outline in Figures 6 and 7 are known in trade respectively under the names of- Remington and L. C. Smith.
The above mentioned machines were selected merely as being representative of the more popular types at present in use and it will be readily understood that other changes required to adapt the cover for use on other types of machines, will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the hereunto appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, the reference characters 5 designate the frame of the typewriting machine having connected openings 6 and 7 in its top and front to expose the basket of pivoted keys one of which has been shown at 8 in Figure 5.
The numeral 9 designates the platen or feed roller on which the paper rests to receive the in'ipressions of the keys, and 10 designates the ribbon which supplies the ink for the impressions.
In typewriters of the kind illustrated in Figures 1 to 5, the ribbon is wound on spools 12 mounted ontop of the frame and at opposite sides of the point 13 at which the keys strike the platen. i
The cover of my invention, designated in its entirety by the reference character 14 comprises an angular body portion 15 adapted to close the openings 6 and 7 of the frame of the machine.
The front part '15 of the body port on 5 is flat to extend evenly along the forward side of the frame, and the substantially horizontal upper part 15 of the same is preferably bulged to afford work ng room for the-keys in their movement to and from the point 13 at which they hit the paper on the platen.
slanting rearwardly from the body por-' tion of the shield is a member 16 of reduced width which curves over the platen at the central point of the machine at which the types are impressed upon the paper through the medium of the inked ribbon.- The member 16 is flanged as at 16 to enclose the space over which it extends and it has an opening 16 closed by a pane 17 of transparent material through which the operator can observe the work.
The transparent pane is preferably made of glass or other similar material and it is set in a detachable frame 18 so that it may be readily removed if necessary. I
In machines of the type of those illustrated in Figures 1 and 6, in which the platen is raised to change the line of writing from the lower case type to the upper case type on the heads of the he s, the member 16 is hinged as at 19 to ena 1e it to follow the movement of the platen 9 and its flanges overlap the sides of the body member of the cover as indicated at 20, so that even though it moves upwardly with the platen, the space covered by the member remains completely enclosed.
For machines in which the ribbon spools are mounted on top of the frame, the cover is provided with narrow slots 21 through which the ribbon passes.
It is desirable that the flanges of the member extend as near to the surface of the platen as is possible without interfering with the movement of the paper, so that the paper together with the carbon and copy sheets will practically fill the space between the platen and the cover and thereby aid in deadening the sound made by the keys when they strike the paper on the platen through the medium of the ribbon.
The shield is fastened on the frame of the typewriter by screws 22 or other suitable means and it is preferably provided with a lining 23 of felt or other sound-insulating material which not only aids materially in deadening the sound but which also functions as a packing to insure an air-tight contact of the shield with the frame.
The shield shown in Figure 7 is solid in that its platen embracing member 16 is a rigid and preferably integral part of the body member 15, the shield being particu- ;arly adapted for use on machines in which .he platen is not lifted, but the type-changing adjustment is accomplished by an upward movement of the entire assemblage of pivoted keys commonly known as the hasket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt is 1. A silencing device for typewriters comprising in combination with a machine having a frame, and a platen, a cover exclusively enclosing a portion of the surface of the platen around and including the point at which the impressions are produced byaction of the keys.
2. A silencing device for typewriters comprising in combination with a machine having a frame, and an upwardly movable platen, a hinged cover exclusively enclosing a portion of the surface of the platen, around and including the point at which the impressions are produced by action of the keys.
3. A silencing device for typewriters comprising in combination with a machine having a frame, and a platen, a partially transparent cover exclusively enclosing the portion of the surface of the platen around and including the point at which the impressions are produced by action of the keys.
4. A silencing device for typewriters comprising in combination with a machine including a partially open frame, and an upwardly adjustable platen, a cover having a movable, flanged and transparent member enclosing the portion of the platen at which the impressions are produced by action of the keys.
5. A silencing device for typewriters comprising in combination with a machine having a partially open frame, and a platen, a cover closing an opening of the frame above the keys, and exclusively enclosing a portion of the surface of the platen around and including the point at which the impressions are produced by the action of the keys.

A silencing device for typewriters comprising in combination with a machine having a partially open frame, and a platen, a cover closing openings of the frame at the top and the front thereof, for exelusivelv enclosing a portion of the-surface of the platen around and including the point at which the impressions are produced by action of the keys.
