To all 'whom t may concer/rt.'
ABe it known that I, STEPHEN SrIANArIAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, county ofHam- 5 ilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover Boxes for Meters, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to cover boxes for 1o meters, and more specifically toa self-drainlng cover-box or enclosure for Aoutdoor water-meters and the like. l
The primary object of the invention is to provide a box-like cover for meters having a construction which insures ready and complete drainage of all water that may find access to the inside thereof, and which, therefore, is free from the troubles and dangers attendant upon the freezing of collected Water in ordinary forms of such boxes. 'l
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view `of the invention, partly in sectional elevation; and- Figure 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates a casing of hollow pipe form designed as an enclosure for an outdoor meter (not shown), the same having a bell-like upper end providing an internal annular upwardly-facingv ledge 2 and an encircling upright flange 3.
Permanently seated upon the ledge 2 is the horizontal base flange 4 of an inner covering for the casing-enclosed meter, and seated vupon said base-flange, or upon a gasket 5 which overlies said flange, is the lower end of a cylindrical main cover 6 which extends upward to a suitable height above the casing -1 and which is spaced from the casing flange 3 to provide for suitably calking 13. Said main cover has a closed upper end 6a provided with an opening 7 through which access may be had to the interior of the cover, and disposed in closing relation to said opening is a removable plate-like cap 8.
The inner covering hereinbefore referred to is designed to shield the casing-enclosed.
meter from water which finds access t5 the interior of the main cover 6 and to drain such water to an out-let, as will hereinafter be described. In the embodiment" 'disclosed in the drawings, `Vsaid inner covering comprises three separate members 9,' 10 and 11,`preferably formed of galvanized sheet metal, the, membern 9 being ofI upright hollow cylindricalV Vneck-like form, having the flange 4 formed integral therewith. Saidy member 9 'is spaced from 'the mainfcover 6 to,formanintermediate channel 12 adaptedjfor 'the reception of Water asf the'v latter drains from the other members Vconstituting sai-d innery covering. The member 10r constitutes ay removable lcover for the member 9, having ya downturned flange l()a adapted-to seat inembracing relation to the neck port-ion of said member 9. Said member 10 has therein a central opening defined by an upright flange or neck 10b, and disposed Vin embracing relationto said neck 10b is thedownturned flange 11a ofthe member 11,the latter constituting va removable cap ,for said opening and having a diameter suflicientlyr smaller than that of the opening 7 in the main cover 6 that it may be conveniently removed through the last mentioned opening, as for exposing to view the dial of the meter. While it is apparent that theinner covering may be otherwise constructed and made of fewer parts, yet for purposes of convenience I prefer to employ the construction described.
The casing 1 has therein a drain opening or passage 14 which opens upward through the ledge 2, apertures 15 and 16 provided in the base flange 4 and gasket 5, respectively, in register with said passage. While said passage may be otherwise arranged, it is preferred that it be disposed vertically, vas
a recess 2O of suitable length; and depth in that part of its lower edge adjacent to said passage, said recess being designed to permit Water collected in the channel 12 to flow unobstructedly to ,said passage. Due to the fact that the enclosure is at all times kept free from the collection of Water,`freezing of the meter is effectively eliminated.
f What is claimedY is-l Vl. An enclosure for meters, comprising a casing having at its upper end an upright flange and having an internal annnlar ledgeI located inwardly With respect to lsaid flange, an inner -covering having base flange seated en .Said ledge; an yentercover vseated' nnen Sei-@ibase ange andspaeed from said innen (levering t ferm' intermediate annular ehennel, and e. drain Passage leading one ward from Asaid channel through. the, casing Wall 4 2L An'eneleenle fel* meters, comprising n easing having .its npp'en en@ an upright enge endlhevng en internal annnlanled'ge loeef'ed'ifnwnrdly' With'reepeet to Seid flange, en inner eeveingfhavng a Lnenne Seated on said ledge, enter Gevel? `seated. upon saidba'se angf'e and SpnCf-,ed from said inner 'eov'erngto 'ferm .an intermediate annnlar Channel, nese'age'leading entivard froinsad channel through the-eeeng 'n."a'll,V fsa-id' p"V 'Sage opening upward through .Sadlelge 4enelolslnie inn meters,v comprising a easing hevng et its 'upper ein-0L er1 Ynellfeht flange 'and having' .ein 1; ,ternel ,annuler ledge leeeted inwardly with 'reepleetite Said flange,
