VENT-BOX;
T 0 all whom it may concern:
' a vent box which will have a large ventilating passageway therethrough, relative to the size of the pipe upon which it is used; a further object of the invention is to construct a vent box which will prevent the insertion of sticks or pieces of wire which would clog the drainage system and to still maintain the desired'amount of ventilating area, and a still further object of the invention is to make various improvements in the construc tion and arrangements of the several parts of the vent box to increase its efliciency and facilitate the manufacture of the same.
Referring to the drawings; Figure 1 is a vertical section of our improved vent box; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 1gig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the vent In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, 1 represents the cover provided with ventilating orifices 2. The casing 3 is cylindrical and is provided at the top with a flange 1 to receive the cover 1. The lower part of the casing 3 is provided with an enlarged flange 6, which forms an annular recess 7 of larger diameter than the inside diameter of the casing 3. The casing 3 fits over the end of the vent pipe 8, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the said enlarged annular recess 7, forms a space for calking the casing to the vent pipe.
The casing 3 is provided with an aperture 10 formed above the flange 6, so that the calking metal may be poured through the aperture 10 and fill the annular recess 7. A. temporary collar 12, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, is formed around the drain pipe to hold the molten metal, in the manner well known to the plumbing trade. By thus pro- Application filed March 29, 1919,
V Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 3, 1919.
Serial No. 286,070.
viding the lower end of the casing with a bell-flange 6, having an aperture 10, formed in the casing above the flange, a leaded joint may be readily made with the vent pipe, and the necessity of having an upwardly turned bell-flange on the'vent pipe is avoided.
The casing 3 is provided with an inwardly projecting flange 15, which rests upon the top of the vent pipe 8 and thus supports the vent. box upon the said pipe, and also forms a member against which a stick or wire would strike if inserted in the vent box.
A rod 18 is secured to the center of the cover 1 and carries two disks, or shields, 19 and 20. The lower disk 20 is larger in diameter than the upper disk 19 and is provided with central aperture 21, as shown in Fig. 2,-to increase the ventilating space through the vent box. The said apertures 21, formed in the lower disk are protected by the upper disk 19, which is secured upon .the rod 18 midway between the lower disk and the cover, and said" disk 19, is of larger diameter than the area of the apertures 21 formed in the lower disk 20.
A collar 28 fits loosely in the casing 3 and rests upon the projection 26 formed on the casing. Said collar 28 is provided with a conical flange 29, which forms a funnel shaped member located immediately below the cover 1, which slightly reduces the diameier of the free passageway through the vent I ox.
The dotted lines A, B and C Fig. 1, illustrate that a stick could not pass through the vent box but would strike against either the disks or the conical flanges projecting inwardly from the casing.
The disks 19 and 20 and the flanges 29 and 15 are all provided with sloping upper surfaces so that any particles of dirt will fall or will be flushed through the vent box and will not clog the latter. By this construction a self cleaning vent box is provided.
By constructing the vent box in the above described manner the necessary amount of ventilating space through the vent box is provided, and the disks and flanges are arranged to form a trap which will prevent the insertion of sticks andpieces of wire. The cover may be removed together with the disks 19 and 20 and also the collar 28, so that a plunger, the diameter of the drain pipe 8, may be inserted into the latter without removing the vent box.
Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A vent box for drains comprising a casing, a cover having orifices formed therein, disks centrally located within the casing, said disks being of different diameters, the larger one of said disks having apertures formed therein located adjacent to the center thereof, the smaller one of said disks being larger in diameter than the said apertures formed in the larger disk to prevent a wire from passing through the said orifices formed in the cover and the said apertures formed in the larger disk, and a conical flange projecting inwardly from the casing.
2. A vent box for drains comprising a casing, a cover having orifices formed therein, a rod secured in the cover, an inverted conical member having a central passageway formed through the same, a disk upon the said rod located below the said conical member, a second disk upon said rod and of 3. A vent box for drains comprising a casing, a cover upon said casing, a rod Secured to the cover, disks secured upon said rod and spaced below the cover, a collar adapted to fit into the casing, an inwardly projecting annular flange upon the collar, and a stop upon the casing to hold the said collar so that the said flange thereon will project between the disks and the cover.
4. A vent box for drains comprising a casing, a cover upon said casing, disks centrally mounted within the casing, a collar adapted to fit into the casing and rest thereon, a conical flange upon said collar adapted to project inwardly between the cover and the disk which is located adjacent to the cover and one of said disks being larger in diameter than the internal diameter of the said flange.
5. A vent box for drains comprising a casing a cover upon said casing having orifices formed therein, a rod secured upon the cover, a disk upon the rod located adjacent to the cover, a second disk of larger diameter upon said rod located below the first mentioned disk, said second disk having apertures formed therein adjacent to the center thereof, said casing having an enlarged annular chamber formed therein adjacent to the periphery of the larger disk, aflange upon the casing projecting inwardly below the lower disk, a collar supported by the said casing, and a flange upon the collar projecting inwardly between the upper disk and,
the cover.
In testlmony whereof we affix our signatures.
WILLIAM W. BYTHINERL FRANK MONTAGUE.
