FASTENER-INSERTING' DEVICE;
"A lication fi1ediApri126, 1923. Seria1No.63 1,8 1;.
' To all'whom it mag concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. J oHNs'roN, of White PlainsfWestchester Ooimty,-New York, have madecertain new and useful Improvements in Fastener-Inserting- Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to fastener inserting devices for attaching fasteners to fabrics, leather or the like, particularly where there are several layersof the mathe flange which the set forms from the skirt terial. It is particularly "adapted to setting blind eyelets in shoe uppers, .where there are several assembled layersof liningand leather. While that is its principal utility, the principles here disclosed maybe employed in securing other fasteners to some of several layers of material; 'someof-the claims forming part of this specification are so phrased, and are intended to cover such other applications of the invention. The principal parts employed are a set for upsetting the skirt of the eyelet, where the device is so used, which has the usual tapered portion for that purpose; another member movable relative'to the set, which is prefer-l ably a sleeve, though it need not necessarily surround the set; means movable relative to theset for'separating two of the'layers of material so as to provide a spacein which of the eyelet curls over without engaging the outer separated layer, which means' is usually one or more levers pivoted in the sleeve, and operated by a cam surface on the punch'when the sleeve and punch'move relatively, though other arrangements may be employed. I Some means of returning the parts to normal position when the'Set is retracted is desirable, for which springs may be used. The device is positively actuated in its operation, which is to be preferred, as the action does not then. depend, as in some other devices, upon the resilience of the leather or other material; but the layer is positively raised and after the eyelet is set is pressed down into place. In practice the layer moved is the outer one, and it is lifted by the levers as the work is commonly done; I prefer to use the term separated in the claims, to cover inversions or like ,wariations.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of my invention in one form, being a central vertical section of my improved device, on a large scale.
The set which upset-s the eyelet, which it is unnecessaryto show, bears in general the reference letter A, with various -'indices.'
The conoidal part for upsetting is marked A; A isthe tapered shank".for -insertion in the machine commonly, employed; A a
collar; he 'sha'ft'of the Set, A the cam i y for operating the levers; while at A I show'that the tip may be inserted-in the shaft by a screw-thread, thus making it re newable, and saving expense in .case' of breakage. As it is small, it may ybeimadea.
of good steel without undue cost.
' Bis the member carrying the levers,whi'ch is preferably a sleeve, and may be formed integral if desired, as the removable. tip permits the insertion of the set from above,
after the levers are secured in placefl C C are the levers for separating-the layers of material, also not shown. I These are pivoted respectively at 0 0", and are preferably e1- wedge-form. Also-it is best to make the levers short andpivot them near the bottom of thesleeve, as this makesthe radius of the are which they describe small, I and thus makes them'lift; attheir outer ends more quickly, relative to their lateral'swing, thus lifting th'e' outer layer-of leather'or fabric promptly. A i v H H 1 F D D are springs for returning-the levers-to their normal or lillustrated po'sitionjs asthe with'the charactero'f the work; With,ordi-.
nary leather two are sufficient; with very thin tawed skins three may be needed, but more may be used, if desired, though not generally required.
I have drawn the view of the device on a much exaggerated scale, as is apparent, so as to make it easily comprehended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A device for setting blind eyelets in a 7 selected part of several layers of material,
comprising a set provided with a setting shoulder adapted for insertion in the material for spreading the skirt of an eyelet between two of the layers, and means carried by the device and movable relatively to the set for sep arating: the tWo layers to permit the spread portion of the eyelet to pass be tween them.
