Description

J. HBNNESSEY. FASTENING MEANS FOR LAOES.
APPLICATION FILED DBO. 13, 1909.
Patented Oct. 11,1910.
rm: NORRIS PETERS ca, wasumzrrarv, n c.
JAMES I-IENNESSEY, OF MARION, INDIANA.
FASTENING MEANS FOR LACES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HENNnssEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Means for Laces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoes, more particularly however to a means of lacing the same.
The object of this invention is to eliminate the necessity of passing the laces or shoe string through eyelets; to do away with the necessity of hooks which have been used heretofore and are liable to catch in drapery or clothing.
It also contemplates the construction of a device of this character which will be adapted for use either in connection with a single or a double lace.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a flap provided with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the intermediate catches; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the catches adjacent the top of the upper; Fig. 4: is a modification of one of the intermediate catches; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the flap with the lip partly broken away illustrating the base of one of the intermediate catches and top catches.
The means for lacing shoes forming the subject-matter of the present invention comprises a lip 1 stitched to the shoe adjacent the flap 2 and extends to the edge thereof. This lip extends approximately the entire length of the fiap and is so constructed that Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 13, 1909.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Serial No. 532,887.
the same forms a reinforcement for the upper of the shoe, and is also provided with a series of openings therein through which the shoe string catches extend.
The intermediate catches forming the subject-matter of the present invention comprise a diamond-formed base 4 to which is formed a stem or shank 5, said base being retained betweenthe flap and the lip 1, said stem projecting upwardly through the lip. At the upper extremity of the stem is formed a flattened circular head 6 which retains the lace in its operative position.
In order that the lip 1 may be retained flush against the base 5 a circular lug 10 is provided adjacent to the base 5 and normally bears against the outer surface of the lip 1. The lip is stitched to the flap by a series of cross stitches which form pockets for the base'of substantially the same formation as said base, thus retaining the base in position and secure from rotation.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
The combination with a flap of a lip c0- operating therewith, a plurality of fastening means for laces, each fastening means comprising a diamond formed base plate having an upwardly extending shank formed on said base plate, a head formed on said shank and a circular lug located adjacent to said base plate, said base plate adapted to be engaged between the flap and the lip, said lip being retained by said lug, and the lip being cross stitched to the fiap between each fastening means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HENNESSEY.
