Utilizing# the illustratedii `s'tiricture I as a characteristic embodiment: by'whoh* tl'mdo,L ture? of' my inventioiifmay loeuntlerstood, I will nolw proceed to e more detailed disoriesioh of theV principles` involved tlierei'n,` it biiigjunderstood "that fsuoh' embodiment and disoussio'is"illil'stative rather thah specific except" Wliele" Speoic' fatee *of invetttiloii ae'set. forth asjelem'eiits ofnovel'ty. Throughout tho -speciootiorr and drowngjs uw olraaoolutolri Shift i the pawl leverA` 23 is rocked on its pivot by the link 21, and through the engagement of the feed pawls 26 with the ratchet v25, said ratchet is turned through a part of a revo-z lution and by means of the gear train 28, 29, rotates the drive shaft 6 for the cloth beams 3. Asthe diameterof the cloth lbeam increases, the roll- 18 is liftedi bythe successive layers of cloth wound on the beam and by reason of its connection at 2O with the link 21 raises said link in the slot 22 of the pawl carrying lever 23, thus changing the leverage, and thereby automatically reducing the number of picks.
, Inasmuch as the loom of the present invention is designed to weave two independent lengths of fabric, it is necessary to employ two shuttles with appropriate picker mechanism for operating the same, together with suitable heddle and reed mechanism operating in properly timed relation to the flight of the shuttles. I have accordingly indicated at 34 a batten which extends transversely of the loom approximately midway of theheight of the side frames 1 and which carries the shuttle boxes and the reed mechanism. -The `batten 34 is automatically raised and lowered to open and close the shed by means of cranks 35 (Fig. 1) on the crank shaft 31 and connecting rods 35y to the batten, being guided in its vertical travel by'guide rods 36 carried by the side frames 1. The shed is openwhen the cranks are lowered (Fig. 1) and is closed when the cranks are raised.
The batten 34 has at either side thereof and s aced therefrom side strips 37 (Fig. 5) which define with the batten independent parallel guideways 38 for the shuttles S. Beyond the side frames 1 the batten 38 has bolted thereto at 39 on either side thereof a pair of blocks 40 (Fig. 6) constituting the bottom surfaces of the shuttle boxes. The side walls of the shuttle boxes are indicated at 41 and the blocks 40 are vertically slotted asindicated at 42 to admit the picker sticks 43 which are fulcrumed upon the side frames 1 at 44 and are actuated in the usual manner.
Mounted uponV the batten 34 is an overlying strip 45 which with other strips 46 overlying the guide walls 37 and' spaced therefrom as indicated at 47, Fig. 5,. constitute a mount for the reeds R past which-the shuttles therefore,
batten 34 as actuated from the crank shaft 31 whereby to open and close the shed at the proper moment during the flight of the shuttles. Y f i The warp I/V is opened and closed in properly timed relation to the movement of the batten by heddles H arranged beneath the batten and moved laterally relative thereto by theusual dobby. Inasmuch as this dobby forms no part of my present yinvention, it is not illustrated, althoughV the heddles are shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
In order to maintain a dragging tension upon the warp beams, each beam roll is provided with a gear 52 meshing with a pinion 53 on a stub shaft 54, the ratio between the gears 52 and 53 being preferably a one to two ratio, and the stub shaft 54 carrying a pulley 55 over which is suspended a counterweight `56, the freeend of the `cord which carries said counterweight being 'wrapped a few times Aaround the pulley to secure it thereon.
It will thus be seen that with myloom two lengths of fabric are simultaneously woven in vertical flights, and that this methodl of weaving not only doubles the production of the loom without material increase in either floor space or power required, but permits convenient inspection of the fabrics for imperfections while they are being woven.'
Various modifications in the construction and operationof my device may obviously be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, if within the limits of the appended claims. NVhat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y 1. In a loom, a crank shaft having an eccentric thereon, a pair of cloth beams, ya
pawl carrying lever operated from said eccentric and having a pawl, a ratchet driven by said pawl, a common drive shaft for the cloth beams f and operatively connected to said ratchet, and a regulating. device in contact with the fabric being wound upon one of said cloth beams and operatively connected with the connections between said eccentric and said pawl carrying lever, i
said pawl carrying lever, whereby to change the effective leverage of said lever as the diameter of said cloth beam increases.
3. In a loom, a crank shaft having an eccentric thereon, a pair of cloth beams, a pawl carrying lever operated from said eccentric and having a pawl, a ratchet driven by sai-d pawl, a common drive shaft for the cloth beams and operatively connected to said ratchet, worm shafts operated from said drive shaft, a clutch mechanism .for selectively connecting said worm Shafts, a
speed reduc-tion gear train between said worm shafts and said cloth beams, and a regulating roller in contact with the fabric being Wound upon one of said cloth beams and operatively connected with the connections Abetween said eccentric and said pawl carrying lever whereby to change the effective leverage of said lever as the diameter i of said cloth beam increases.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
