To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, -Brnns W. KABEL, a citizen of the United States, residing vat Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in` Baclrstops; and I do hereby dem clare the following to be a full, clear,fand exact descript-ion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to inake anduse the same.
The invention relates to ydraft rigging for. railwayl cars and more particularly to a stop member adapted to cooperate. with a movable member of the draft rigging and serve as a tie means to rigidly connect the draft or center sills and prevent their spreading.
One of the principal objects of the invention, generally stated, is to provide a backstop vcasting of great strength value but of comparatively light weight, which can be effectively connected tothe car. sills with; a minimum expenditure of labor.
Particularly stated, the principal features of the invention is.V to provide a backstop with spaced side walls united at their for.- ward ends bya transverse .orend wall forming the bufling web or abutment with which thexyole of the drafting rigging contacts, said walls being united by a bottom or floor web and transversely disposed upwardly inclined webs, said last named webs acting to .reinforce the buliing web and having dis` posed above and below thesame aplurality of rivet openings, the forward lowermost openings being readily accessible by reason of the relative spacing of the front edge of the bottoni web and the lowermost edge of the buiiing web, `the vertically disposed longitudinally extending web reinforcing the bufling web also being shaped to permit free access to the lowermost front rivet openings without impairing their strength value. i 1

The side walls throughout their length are united laterally ofthe casting by upwardly inclined` longitudinal webs 8 which converge toward` the center of the casting, said webs .uniting the side walls. with the b-ufling web and transverse web 7 and pro.- viding a very strongreinforcement for, said bufingweb. Each of theinclined webs 8 is intersected by a vertically disposed web or rib 9 arranged relatively, close to the center of thecast-ing and having a portion extending above and `below the same, said webs 9 acting to reinforce the buiiing wall land having their lower portions spaced above the lower front openings in the side walls tov readily permit the insertion ofthe rivets V.and the connecting of thecasting to the car The'casting is provided with a. vertically disposed longitudinally extending web 10 located centrally of the casting, said web 4upwardly convergingweb `8. Triangular shaped openings 11 may be provided in the upwardly converging web 8, said openings being preferably located Vbetween the transverse web 7 and rear wall 4 of the casting, as best shown in Figure 1.
A casting constructed in accordance with the present invention permits .of the forward edge of the bottom wall being located well back from the lower edge of the bufling wall without sacrificing the strength value of the casting or increasing the weight, it being observed that the shape of the reinforcing webs and their section moduli are relatively large for the amount of metal used, Said webs being advantageously located throughout the casting to uniformly distribute the loads to the major portions of the casting without deformation and at the same time verse wall forming a bufing web, a floor.

I claim:
l. A baclrstop casting for railway draft rigging involving spaced side walls having a plurality of openings therein, said walls being united at their front ends by a transportion uniting the side walls, the front edge of said floor portion being spaced rearwardly from the bnfing web and disposed below the lower edge thereof to provide a relatively large space for access to some of said openings in the forward lower portion of the side walls, and a plurality of longitudinally disposed substantially parallel reinforcing flanges for said bufling web, said flanges being spaced from the side walls and floor portion.
2. A backstop casting for railway draft rigging comprising spaced side walls having a plurality of rivet openings therein, a transverse wall forming a buiiing web uniting the side walls at their front ends, a floor portion connecting the side walls inthe rear of the front ends thereof, said floor portion being located below the bottom edge of the bufiing wall to permit convenient access to the rivet openings, a vertically arranged longitudinally disposed web uniting the buiiing web and floor portion centrally of the casting,
longitudinally extending upwardly inclined webs uniting the vertically arranged web to an adjacent side wall, and a vertically arranged longitudinally extending web located upon each side of the centrally ar,- ranged vertical web and intersecting one of said upwardly inclined webs, said last named webs having their lowermost edges terminating above the. rivet openings located in the `lower forward-'portions of the side walls.
3. A backstop for railway draft rigging involving spacedside walls having rivet openings at their lower forward ends, a bottom wall uniting said side walls and having its forward edge spaced from the front ends of the side walls, a transverse bufling wall uniting the front ends4 of the side walls and having its lower edge arranged in spaced relation from the forward edge of the bottom wall, a centrally located ,vertical web longitudinally uniting the buiiing and bottom walls, and a reinforcing web located upon each side of said centrally located web, each of said webs having its bottom portion terminating short of the said rivet openings.
4. A backstop for railway draft rigging involving spaced side walls having rivet openings at their lower forward ends, a bottom wall uniting said side walls and having its forward edge spaced from the front ends of the side walls, a transverse bufing wall uniting the front ends of the side walls and having its lower edge arranged in `spaced relation from the forward edge of the bottom wall, vertically and laterally arranged intersecting webs reinforcing said buiiing wall and uniting the same with the bottom and side walls, said intersecting webs having their lower portions disposed to permit convenient access to the aforesaid rivet o enings.
5. A backstop casting for railway draft rigging involving spaced side walls each having a plurality of rows of longitudinally disposed rivet openings, a transverse wall uniting the forward ends of the side walls and forming a buifing web, a bottom wall uniting the lower edges of the side walls, said bottom wall having its front edge arranged lin spaced relation from the lowermost edge of said transverse wall, trans versely arranged upwardly converging webs uniting the side walls and transverse buffing web, said converging webs extending between certain of the longitudinal rows of rivets, and vertically disposed webs intersecting said upwardly converging webs for reinforcing the bufing wall, said last named webs having their lower edges spaced above and inwardly from the rivet openings lying beneath the upwardly converging wall for permitting convenient access to Said openings.
6. A combined tieand backstop casting for railway draft rigging involving spaced side walls each having a plurality of rows of rivet openings, a transverse wall uniting the side walls at their forward ends and forming a buliing wall, a rear wall uniting said side walls, a bottom wall uniting the side walls intermediate their front and rear ends, a center thimble projecting from said bottom wall, a transverse web uniting the bottom wall, side walls and center thimble, upwardly converging webs uniting the front,
rear and side walls, said webs intersecting the center thimble, and a plurality of vertically arranged longitudinally extending reiniorcing webs having portions projecting above and below the upwardly converging webs, said reinforcing webs having their lower-edge portions spaced above and inwardly of the lowermost row of rivets in said side walls.
