To allwlwm t may Gomera:
Be it known thatn I, THOMAS H. SYMNG- TON, a citizenof the United States, residing' at Baltimore,"in thecity of Baltimore and State of Maryland, 'have' invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Draftlowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of .the invention, .suchv as willy enableA yothers skilled inV the art to whichit appertainsto make andfusethe same:
The invention relats to' railway draft rigging, and more particularly' to a cheekplate for use with that type of draft' rigging YI5 ging, 'Ihe principal object" f. the'` invenltion isrto providemeansto greatly strengthen commonly called tandem` spring draft' rigand reinforce, and therehyprolong the life of, aV cheek-plate of the type illustrated and described infUnitedV StatesLetters Patent lheretofore granted tome on'May 26, 1914,

rIfl'uoughout the specification. and claimsV likeV parts are designated by like'reference characters.
lsioioo tho improved form ofv otter-plato Y differs Vfrom that illustrated and described 1n my former patent heretofore mentioned, only m' the formation of the main stop shoulders and the upper follower 'guide Harige, it will only be necessary for al corn` 'pletn-n'destanding of'thiS-invention to describe' the cle'ek-fplate generally except for these particular atures; y s 1f They cheek-plato oomprisosa main web vor andrlniddle, and the rearV and middle Stops, Y
are arranged in a plane parallel to, ybut spaced inwardly from, the* rear wall or sill` adjacentvface of the casting, so as to form gilides for the ends'v ofthe follower plates.
'A plralityot oountersinks-or depressions 8' and 9v l arey provided' inf each of theA portions 7 of the web; Thev outer, orsill adjaoont foos'fof those- 'ootntorsinks aro adapted tocontctwith theadjac'entjface of the' car sill, and"V are preferably in the samef'verticalI plane with the* outer` portions of the web 1` af'the" front and rea'r portions 10 and 11 of the" cheek-plate. The depressions 8 and 9 and thestticll portions 1'0 and 11,are suit- Y ably apertured asfat 12 t'oreceive the securing rivets* which connect fthe cheek-plate to the a"djacentsills;Y Y
Iritermed-iate the main' stop shoulder-sare also ltoatetrtho front' and 'r'oanintermodiato or limiting' stops; rfttndy 14, respectively.
Eafoh f of these' stops' is 'crossedV ori intersected A p by'fo'ne ofthe;idepressi(ins*9.l Fig. 1, the directions in whichfFigs, 3i andV 5. are taken. beingind ic'li'e'd by tli'ef arrows otV tto.V middle ,scoprono sloping from tho i oryoornoro: thereof tothe onorj stops,A
The front stop 2 is provided adjacent the upper and lower portions thereof with forwardly extending lips or flanges17 and 18 which are preferably made somewhat longer than the correspondingly `extendinglip or flange 19 which is formed on the intermediate portion of the said stop. These flanges v 1T, 18 and 19, in conjunctionwith the inclined bracing webs 20, which arefintegrally connected thereto, and the main web ofthe cheek-plate, form longitudinally extending 'pockets 21 which open on the inner or yoke adjacent face of the cheek-plate. `The outer faces of these lips or flanges vform `an eX- tended bearing against which the adjacent portion of the yoke may rub, and also .Serve to greatlystrengthen and reinforce the vertically extending flange which forms the front stop 2. j l greatly strengthened `by providing `thejconnecting webs 22 thereof with vertically extending lips or flanges 23 whiclnAin-conjunction with the said webs 22, form a series of T shaped flanges, the headA of each `T forming a portion of the yoke adjacent face of the said stop. I also preferably provide a downwardly extending lip 24 on the inner edge` of the flange forming the upper end of the said stop, the verticalface ofsaid lip `being preferably in thesame planewith the outer faces of the T flanges. These lips or flanges 23, 23'and 24 lgive to the inner face vof the middle stop a large Wearing area to counteract the rubbing action ofthe adj acent portion of the draft yoke, and also greatly strengthen the vertical flanges 5 and f5 which form the followeriadjacent(faces ofthe middle stop. The pockets 23a formed by the flanges v5 and 6, the webs 22 and the main web 1 `of the casting open, aswillbe observed from the drawings, on vthe inner or inner edge of the rear stop `3is likewise pro- `vided with alip or flange 25, this flangeextending rearwardly, and is` integrally connected-to the bracing webs 26 `and is spaced from the main web of the-cheek-plate. `The `longitudinally extending pockets [27 i thus formed by the stop member 3, the flange 25, the bracing webs 26 and the `main web 1, also' lopen on the yoke adjacent `faceof the cheek-plate. A y,
Owing to the constantly increasinguse of cast steel yokes in draft rigging, it hasbecome .of great importance to inrease the The middle stop 4 is also area of the malleable iron cheek-plate at all possible points of contact of the same with the yoke. To increase the wearing area of the .cheek-plate and at the same time to retain the highly desirable construction heretofore patented to me has given rise to great difficulty and has been `successfully accomplished 'in the device herein described. It will be readily apparent from the foregoing description that the improved form o cheek-plate presents at all places of Contact of thesame with the yoke a large s urface area, and that this additional area is produced by flanges which add great strength to the casting and which do not in the least interfere with the simple method of casting the cheek-plate or make any change 1n the vform of the casting which would prevent its use in the replacement of the type heretofore patented to me.
. 1 Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to `secure by Letters Patentis:` Y jj' 7,
y1. A cheek-plate for tandem spring draft rigging comprising a main web, a plurality of end sto lmembers connected thereto, said stop memY ers `each involving a flange extending inwardly fromv said, web, a middle stop member connected to said web and involving a lpair of` spaced inwardly extendinganges connected b spaced webs", 'and meansifor reinforcing said end sto members said means comprising longitudinally and vertically extending flanges connected to the j inner or yoke adjacent faces .of said end stop members, and means for reinforcing said `middle stopmember comprising vertical longitudinally extendingf flanges connected to V,said `webs, the vertical faces of :said flanges being `located in the same plane as the inner Vor yoke adjacent edges of said stop flanges.
i. 2,.- r-1cl1eek-plate fortandem spring draft rigging comprisinga main web, a plurality of stop members extending inwardly Atherei 'from and, vrespectively, forming the three main follower stops, and a plurality of longitudinally extending flanges spaced inwardly fromsaid main web and respectively .tandemv draft rigging'side casting having front, rear, and center main stops,
