PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SIGGELKOW, OF NEW CASTLE, NEW YORK.
GAR-TERI.
Application filed April 19, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SIGGELKOW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at town of New Castle, county of \Vestchester, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Garter, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide garters which may be laundered easily and which will be adjustable along the length of the leg of the wearer as well as around the leg.
Garters are worn by many next to the skin, and particularly during the summer months. Elastic webbing so worn absorbs perspiration. This soils the garter, tends to give it an objectionable odor, and hastens the destruction of the rubber used to give the garter elasticity. The present invention provides a removable and easily washable cover for the elastic portions of the garter, preventing the elastic portions of the garter from coming into contact with the wearers skin and making it possible for the wearer to greatly prolong the life of the elastic portions of the garter, and to wear clean garters at all times without frequent repurchases.
The length of socks as usually made varies, as do also the length of mens legs from the knee to the heel. Socks sometimes shrink appreciably when washed. For these reasons it is desirable to have an adjustment along the length of the leg as well as, and independent of, the adjustment around the leg. 7
Certain forms of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a mans leg, wearing a sock and one form of the garter;
Fig. 2 is a view of the elastic portions of the garter shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view of the washable portion of the garter shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4c is a view of another invention I Fig. 5 is a view of the elastic which goes part way around the leg and which is used in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4;
Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are fragmentary views of certain forms of supporting member adjustable along the length of the leg;
Figs. 10 and 11 are enlarged views of a form of the Serial No. 633,065.
fastener which may be used for the supporting member shown in Fig. 4;.
The washable cover 1 and its extension 5 are made of muslin, silk, or other washable material. The stitching 2 and 3 keeps the parts of the cover in a folded position through which the elastic portion 4 is run.
The extension 5 of the cover 1 is preferably made in one piece with the cover 1. The tab loop 6 is preferably made of the same material as the extension 5 and serves to keep in place the elastic or non-elastic supporting member 7. It is stitched to the ex tension 5 by the stitching 8 and 9. The elastic portion 1 is preferably provided with an end 10 of silk, muslin or other washable material, to which is attached a hook 11 of metal which engages with one of a plurality of eyes 12 when the garter is fastened around the leg. The supporting member 7 is preferably attached to the elastic portion 4 by'means of a fastener 13 and is made adjustable by means of the slide 14. An ordinary garter button 15 is suitably attached to the lower end of the member 7 Another form of the garter is shown in Fig. 1, in which the elastic portion 4 does not completely encircle the leg of the wearer but is attached to the cover 1 by means of hooks 16 or other suitable fasteners. The elastic portion 4' is made somewhat shorter than the cover 1 between the eyelets 17 and 18 so that when the cover 1 is pulled to its full length around the leg of the wearer the elastic portion 4 is stretched somewhat, providing the necessary elasticity to keep the garter in place. The supporting portion of the fastener 19 is attached to the cover 1 as are also the hook 11 and the plurality of eyes 12. To the supporting portion of the fastener 19 thewearer attaches at will the lower portion of the fastener 20, shown more clearly in'the enlarged views, Figs. 10
and 11. The remainder of the supporting 'member, consistingof the member 7 the slide 14, and the button 15 are the same as inFig. 2. In Fig. 1 a'portion of the cover 1 is cut away to partly show the elastic portion 4 in its position. In this view the elastic portion 4c is stretched so that its length with its hooks 16 approximately equals the length of the cover '1 between the eyelets 17 and 18.
lVhile the types of supporting member "Z separate from the cover 1 or 1.
and cover extension 5 above described are all that are essential to the invention, in so far as those parts are concerned, I do not wish to be limited to these alone, but to include the following described types of supporting member and cover extension or variations thereof.
In Fig. 6 the supporting member 7 is made adjustable for length by running up over the elastic portion 4 .and attaching to one of a plurality of fasteners 21. In this view the tab 6 is shown cut away in order to show the supporting member 7 more clearly. In Fig. 7 the extension 5' is made It is suspended upon the shoulder of the fastener 13, or other fastener used, the remainder of the supporting member being thesame as that shown in Fig. 2 or Fig. 4:. Fig. 8 illustrates the supporting member 7 attached to .the cover 1 and extension 5 by means of an ordinary button and buttonhole connection 22. In Fig. 9 the supporting member 7" is hooked or otherwise fastened to a a plurality of eyes 23 or other fasteners, at-
tached to the cover 1 and to the extension 5. I
The fastener shown in Figs. and 11, while not essential to the invention, is desirable to more effectually keep fastened the supporting member '7 to the cover 1 or the elastic member 4 While the garter is removed from the person. The upper portion 19, preferably made of metal, is attached to the cover 1 or the elastic member 4 by means of stitching through the holes 24:, or otherwise. 'This portion 19 is provided with an opening or slit 25 of such size and shape as to receive the curved hook 26, also preferably of metal, when the same is placed in a position oblique to the ventical .or approximately at the angle shown in Fig. 11, said opening 25 being so limited in extent that the hook 26 is covered by other parts of the portion 19 when the supporting member 7 is in its normal vertical position as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 10.
I am aware that garters have heretofore been made with a certain amount of adjustment along the length of the leg by means of the adjustment for length around the leg. The disadvantage of such garters is that, when they are made longer, .to accommodate a shortened sock, they have a tendency to slip over the calf of the leg, falling down about the wearers feet, to'his great embarrassment, usually. It is believed that the present invention entirely overcomes this disadvantage.
' Various changes in detail and other modifications may obviously be made in garters made according to my invention, for example two hose supporters may be secured to the leg encircling members when a double grip garter is desired.
opposite ends to hold it around the leg, of a supporter detachably secured to one of said members, hose gripping means on the supporter, and a washable strip separable from said supporter and composed entirely of textile fabric to separate the supporter from the leg.
2. In a garter, the combination with a washable non-elastic casing member adapted to completely encircle the leg just below the knee and having a downwardly depending extension, of an elastic member adapted to fit within said casing, interengaging adjustable fastening devices at opposite ends of one of said members to hold it around the leg, and a hose supporter adapted to be secured to one of said members in position to be separated from the leg by said downward extension, said hose supporter being readily separable from said depending extension.
3. In a garter, the combination with a washable casing member adapted to complete-ly encircle the leg below the knee and having a downward extension, an elastic leg encircling member in said casing member, and means to hold the casing member and elastic member around the leg, of a hose supporter including a garter button, means for attaching said'supporter to one of said members in line with said extension, and a loop on the extension to maintain the proper relation between the latter and the supporter, said supporter being readily separable from said extension.
4. In a garter, the combination with a leg encircling portion including an elastic member, a washable casing to cover said elastic member and of substantially the same length, a fastener device on one end of said leg encircling portion, and spaced fasten-ing devices at the other end of said member for selective engagement with the first mentioned fastening device, a downwardly extending hose supporter attached to said leg encircling portion, and a shield to prevent contact between the hose supporter and the leg.
5. In a garter, the combination with an elastic member adapted to encircle'the leg below the knee, a hook at one end of said member and a plurality of spaced eyes for engagement by the hook at the other end thereof, a washable tubular casing of approximately the same length ,as the elastic member and adapted to contain the same, said casing having its outer side cut away near one end to give access to theeyes, a downward extension on the casing below said cut-away portion, a hose supporter pivotally secured to the elastic member and adapted to overlie said extension, and a loop to limit movement of said supporter relative to said extension.
6. A garter construction comprising an elastic leg band with a depending hose fastener in combination with a detachable washable shield comprising a leg encircling body portion forming with the leg band a self-su staining portion and a depending portion having a positioning loop for said fastener, the depending portion of said shield being readily separable from said depending hose fastener.
7. In a hose supporter having an encircling band and depending attaching flap, of a lining member of protective material to cover the inside of the band and a flap to cover the garter flap, with means for de tachably securing the lining to the band and additional means for securing the lining flap in place.
