Description

J. P. JARMAN CREAM GAN LOCK Oct. 13, 1925- Filed Jung 17 1924 atto: mq
Patented Oct. 13, 1925.
y UNITED STATES JOHN r. JARMAN, oFsro-UXQCITY, IOWA.
CREAM-CAN LOCK.
Application filed June 17, 1924. serial No. 720,622.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known thatI, JOHN P. JARMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Voodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cream-Can Locks, of which the following is a specifica* tion.
This invention relates to locking devices especially adapted to be used upon lcream cans and the like, and it consists 1n the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a locking device of the character stated, of simple and durable structure, and which may be easily and quickly applied to the can or removed therefrom, and which will properly hold the cover in position upon the can, so that` the cover may have slight limited movement with relation to the body of the can, in order to prevent gases which may form within the can to escape without damaging or breaking the can.
With the above object in view, the device comprises a pair of horn shaped members, which are pivotally connected together, the pointed end portions of the said members being adapted to be passed through registering openings in the cover and mouth portion of the can.
One of the said members is provided with spaced lugs which are adapted to be disposed at the opposite sides of the handle of the cover, and a leaf spring is mounted upon the said member. The other member is provided with a lug adapted to pass through an opening in the leaf spring, and a lock may be applied to the said lug, whereby the device may be securely held in position upon the pan and the cover is held in place with relation to the mouth of the can.
In theaccompanying drawing: i
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of the upper portion of the can and the cover therefor, with the lock applied.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one of the horn shaped members which is a component part of the lock device.
The can locking device comprises horn shaped members 1 and 2, the member 2 being provided at one end with a recess 3, which receives the inner end portion of the member 1. The member 1 is secured to the member 2, by means of a pivot bolt 4, which passes transversely through the members and the recess 8. The member 1 is provided, in the vicinity of its inner end with anupstanding lug 5, having an opening 6 passing transversely therethrough. A ring 7 is pivotally connected with a member 2, at a point between the ends thereof and may be used as-means for carrying the device. A leaf spring 8 is attached to the top side of the member 2 and is provided with an opening 9, adapted to receive the lug 5 of the member 1, when the parts are in the position as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The bail of a lock 10 may be passed through the opening in the lug` 5, whereby the said lock and bail is disposed above the leaf spring 8, and thus the members 1 and 2 are loosely held in the position shown in Figure 1. The member 2 is provided, at its under side, with spaced lugs 11, adapted to receive between them the handle 12 of the can cover 13, the cover 13 being provided with openings 14, adapted to register with the openings 15 provided in the sides of the mouth port-ion 15 of the can, and when the said openings are in register with each other, the smaller end portions of the members 1 and 2 may be passed through the said registering openings, whereby the cover is secured in position in the mouth of the can, as shown in Figure l of the drawings.
To remove the locking device from the can, the lock 10 is removed from the lug 5, and by grasping the ring 7 in the hand and exerting a pull in an upward direction thereon, the members l and 2 are swung with relation t-o each other, upon the pivot bolts 4, whereby the lug 5 is withdrawn from the opening 9 in the leaf spring 8, and the smaller end portions of the members 1 land 2 are withdrawn from the registering openings 14 and 15, in the cover and mouth portion of the can.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A can locking device including a pair of members, one of said members having at one end a. recess for receiving one end of the other member, a pivot pin passing through the side walls of the recess and through the end of said other member disposed in the recess, and a leaf spring ixed at one end to the member having the recess and eX- tending over the recess.
9.. A can locking device including a member having a recess at one end, a second member having one end receivable in the recess, a pvot pin passing through the side walls of the recess and through the end .of
the second member, a leaf spring Xed to the first member to extend over the recess and l0 provided With an opening adjacent its end, and a lug on the second member adapted to pierce the opening in said spring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN P. J ARMAN.
