Description
Patented Oct. 6, 1925;
UNITED STATES GEORGE KOLLS'IEDE, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.
Application led August 4, 1925.
To all @0710mt may concern.'
Be it. known that I, GEORGE KoLLs'rnDn, a citizen o1c the United States, residing at Frovidence, in the county of Providence and State oi' Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Ornamental Chains, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to ornamental chains such asv eXpansib-le bracelets, linkages, bands, girdles, and garte-rs, of the hollow unit type.
The essential objects of my invention are to ena-ble thebodily detachment-oitl any link or unit from a chain ot' the above type without the necessity of moving or twisting the link to be removed into an angular position relatively to the remainder of the chain, and to attain these ends in a strong, simple, and inexpensive structure.
My invention consists in the construction, means. Vand mechanism for producing the results above specified substantially as hereinafter claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and wherein like reference characters indicate like' parts throughout the views,
Figure 1 is a. fragmentary rear elevation of av chain or bracelet embodying my invention,
Figure 2, a section of the same on line 2 2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3, an enlarged section on line 3 3 of Figure 2, Y
Figure 4, a section on line 4 4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5, an enlarged perspective view of one of the connecting units.
My chain as .herein illustrated includes outer tubular or hollow link members or units, and enclosed connecting link members or units, indicatedin a general way by 10 and 11 respectively. Each unit 10 comprises a transversely curved front plate 12 with its lateral edges rolled over upon a transversely curved back plate 13 to form marginal beads 14. Integral with the ends of the plate 12 are inwardly bent flanges forming the end walls 15 provided with centrally cut away portions forming openings 16. The ends of each back plate 13 are inwardly turned at right angles to form the Serial No. 48,046.
walls 17 provided with peripheral cut away portion or of less height than the wallsl 15, thus formingresultant arcuate openings 18 registering with the openings 16.
Fach connecting unit 11 comprises an oblong transversely curved plate or body 19 provided with lateral guide shoulders 20. One end of thel plate is bent at right angles to form a liange 22. Near its other end there is cutfrom the material of the plate 19, forming a. resultant opening 23, a transversely `disposed inclined resilient tongue 24.
As assembled each unity 11 passes through the openings 18 in the end walls of the units 10. A helical spring 26 in each unit has .one end pressing against its wall 17, and its other end abutting against the flange 22. In the adjacent unit the tongue 24 is rearwardly directed and in transverse align-y ment with the hole 27 near the end of the back wall 13. In order to free the adjacent unit it is merely necessary to forwardly press the tongue 24 into the plane of the openings 18 and the action of the spring 26 will automatically withdraw the unit 11 with its depressed tongue from the adjacent unit. A convenient implement for this purposeis a pin or otherl pointed tool 28 indicated in Figure 2 wherein the broken lines show the depressed position of the tongue 24.
It will be observed that the removal of a unit by the described operation does not reduire anv slow and laborious4 tilting or twisting of either the unit to be removed or any remaining portion of the cha-in. Nor can the chain accidentally come apart by any twisting or turning or tilting motion.
I claim,
In a device ot' the type specilied, a series of hollow connected units provided with openings in their ends, slidable connecting plates in the units extending through the openings, anges upon the corresponding ends of the plates, compressible tongues upon the opposite ends of the plates, the units being provided with holes in substantial alignment with the tongues, and springs engaging the fianges and the adjacent ends of the units.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. V
GEORGE KOLLSTEDE.
