JOHN COYNE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-ASSORTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155.606. dated October 6, 1874; application led March 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CoYNE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachment for Nail Assorting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a nail-assorter tted with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a nail-assorter.
My invention relates to that class of nailassorters in which the separation ismi made by means of a slot or opening of sufficient width to permit the escape of headless nails and retain the perfect ones; and it consists of the combination of such an assorter with a spout or conductor arranged below it to receive and conduct the headless nails and refuse to any desired point or receptacle.
To enable others -skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction. 4
The nail-assorter a. consists of one or more conductors or spouts having a slot, b, formed therein. This assorter is placed in an inclined position, and the nails are delivered. on its upper end. The nails with perfect heads, which are almost invariably perfect nails, ride in the slot or slots b ldown tothe lower or discharge end, and the headless nails and other refuse go through. For the purpose before stated of catching and conducting the refuse, I arrange under the assorter c a conductor or spout, c, which extends under the slot b a dis tance sufficient for the perfect cleaning of the nails, so that it may receive allthe refuse. The conductor c is hung on the attachmentclamp d; but itl may be attached to other parts, or be set up on a standard under the assorter. It is better, however, to fasten it to the assorter or some part of its attachments, so that the vibration Which is communicated thereto may affect it, and hasten the delivery of the refuse.
Instead of running backward this conductor may extend out sidewise, in which case thc discharge-point would be at the long side instead of the short one.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a nail-asserting appa- -ratus having one or more asserting slots or openings, a conductor or spout arranged below it for receiving and conducting the headless nails and other refuse to any desired point or receptacle.
In testimony whereof I, the said JOHN GOYNE, have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN COYNE. Witnesses:
