To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS P. Eennsonn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain lmproven'ients in Sand-Traps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to traps for controlling the delivery of sand to car rails, particularly on electric roads, and its primary object is to provide improved means for effecting a regulated delivery of sand from a car to the rails by the use of a partial vacuum or suction in an apparatus that will feed as desired, is not subject to the usual tend ency to clog, has the capacity for automatically effecting its protection from the cutting action of the sand blast, and is possessed of the desired mechanical construction for convenienee of manufacture, assemblage, dissociation and access.
The nature and characteristic features of my improvements will more fully appear by reference to the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view partially in section taken on the line 1--1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the trap with a sand box thereon; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the detached nozzle.
The apparatus, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a hollow casting 1 forming a bowl 1' having an inlet port or passage 1 at its top, a discharge port or passage 1 at its side, a diagonal battle 1 extending downwardly between the passages 1 and 1, an air duct 1 with the converging discharge passages 1 adjacent to the top of the port 1, and the bottom aperture 1 closed by the removable plug 1, by which the receptacle can be emptied and access had thereto.
A casting 2, provided with a base flange 2 which fits in a seat 1 of the casting 1, forms a nozzle comprising a passage 2 extending therethro-ugh, such passage registering with the passages 1 and 1 from which its interior converges similarly to the elements of an oblique cone frustum.
A casting 3, having the bearing 3* which is engaged to the bearing 1* of the casting 1, is provided with the recess 8* which conforms to the flange 2 of the nozzle 2, the latter being thus fixed in position. The casting 3 is provided with a pocket 3 into which the nozzle 2 discharges and an outlet passage 3 beneath the nozzle and the pocket, the passage delivering through the hose S thereon to the rail.
The box l delivers sand through the passage 1" to the receptacle 1 which can be sub stantially tilled without the sand spilling through the passages 1, 2 and 3 owing th the action of the battle 1". When it is de sued to deliver sand to the rail, air under pressure is supplied to the duct 1 and discharged by way of the passages 1 through the top of the passage 2 into the pocket 3", the suction thus created drawing the sand from the receptacle 1 through the passages 1 and 2 whence it is delivered into the pocket 3 and through the passage 3 As the sand accumulates in the pocket 3. it forms a buffer which protects the apparatus from the cutting action and deterioration resulting from the action of a sand blast against metal. As the bulk of the sand which is delivered through the passage 3 to the rail has not been subjected to the impact of the blast, there is avoided the accumulation of moisture, caking and packing which take place when sand is delivered by blowing against a mass thereof as distinguished from moving it by suction.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A. sanding apparatus comprising a receptacle having a nozzle with a converging discharge passage communicating therewith, means for delivering a blast through said nozzle, an outlet passage beneath the end of said nozzle, and a pocket in line with said nozzle and in communication with said outlet passage.
2. Asanding apparatus comprising a bowl having an inlet port at the top thereof, an, outlet passage at the side thereof, a nozzle with which said outlet passage communicates, a passage for delivering blast through said nozzle, a sand pocket in the line of said blast, and a battle extending downwardly between said inlet port and nozzle.
3. A sanding apparatus comprising a bowl having a removable plug in the bottom thereof, an inlet at the top thereof, an outlet at the side thereof, a baffle extending clownwardly between said inlet and outlet, a passage for delivering blast through said out- 1loelt, and a sand pocket in the line of said ast.
4. A sanding apparatus comprising a receptacle for holding sand, a nozzle communicating therewith, a fluid duct having one or more discharge passages for delivering a blast through the upper part of the passage through said nozzle, a pocket. into which said blast carries sand from said receptacle, and a discharge passage communicating with said pocket.
5. A sanding apparatus having an inlet port at its top, a discharge port at its side, an air passage at the top of and adjacent to said discharge port, an aperture and a removable plug therefor at the bottom of said receptacle, a nozzle which registers with said discharge port and passage, a pocket in line with said nozzle, and a discharge passage beneath said nozzle and in communication with said pocket.
6. A sanding apparatus comprising a casting having a bowl with an inlet at its top, an outlet at its side and a passage above said outlet, in combination with a casting having a pocket and an outlet, and a nozzle clamped between said castings in registration with said bowls outlet and passage and in alinement with said pocket.
7. A sanding apparatus comprising a receptacle, a nozzle communicating therewith, said nozzle having substantially the form of an oblique cone frustum, and means for delivering a blast through said nozzle.
8. A sanding apparatus comprising a receptacle having a lateral outlet port, a nozzle having a downwardly inclined axis communicating with said port, and means for delivering a blast through the upper portion of said nozzle so as to exhaust said receptacle.
