To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL WILLIAM SEREELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and tate of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Dust-Separating or Vacuum Cleaning Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in connection with pneumatic or vacuum cleaning devices, to means for moistening the dust of dust laden air previous to its passage into the wash box or liquid holding vessel, so as to insure a quick and ready mixture with, and taking up in suspension by the water of the wash box and the liberation of the cleaned air.
The device of my invention is located in the pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus in theline of pipe between the place where the dust is collected and the wash box into which it is delivered, and in carrying out my invention, I employ a circular mixing vessel composed of two connected parts, into one of which a pipe enters for conveying the dust laden air or dirty water; the other or lower part of this mixing vessel is provided with a raised flanged center and lower chamber merging into a discharge pipe. A tubular boss enters this lower chamber and a pipe for water is connected therewith on the outside and the pipe of an internal member is connected to it on the inside and this internal member is composed of a disk and top plate and into the cavity formed between these parts, the water enters and is discharged by peripheral or marginal holes. This internal member is.
formed with a disk which fits tightly within the main vessel and the periphery of the disk is diagonally grooved or provided with ports through which the dust laden air or dirty water passes with appreciable and increased speed. The water holes preferably aline with the discharge openings of these diagonal ports so that the dust. of the dust laden air in passing through these diagonal ports, producesan atomizing effect upon the water and the dust is wet by the particles of the immerging water, so that the dust with the water and air all pass together down into the wash box or liquid holding vessel.

This lower member is provided with a central circular ange b1 rising from the bottom of the vessel with a central discharge chamber 3 of small area in proportion to that of the mixing vessel. A tubular boss b2 extends into the discharge chamber and is internally threaded at its outer end to receive the pipe 6 for water and axially bored and threaded to receive the center pipe c2 and the lower end or part of the mixing vessel Z2 is apertured and threaded to receive the discharge pipe 4;.
c represents a disk formed in one piece with a center pipe c2 with a rising outer and flanged edge 01. This disk is provided with bo-sses bored and threaded for the bolts 7 which secure to the disk the top plate al, thus forming between the disk c and the top plate a water chamber to receive the water which enters by the pipe 6, the longitudinal passage-way 5 in the boss b2 and through the center pipe c2 and the disk is provided with series of small water holes 8 from which this water is discharged into the mixing vessel. The periphery of the iianged edge c1 of the disk c is diagonally grooved to provide surface ports 9. These agree by preference in number with the number of the water holes 8 and their lower discharge. ends substantially coincide with the mouths of these water holes. These diagonal ports form the only communicating passage-ways between the uppper part of this circular mixing vessel and the lower part, consequently the entire volume of dust laden air or dirty water is obliged to pass through these diagonal ports and in doing so, a circular motion at an increased speed is imparted thereto and the dust of the dust laden air is moistened by the water which immerges with some force from the holes 8, an atomizing effect having been feo- K of said pipe,

given to the water. The supply of water passing through these holes from the pipes 6 and c2 is preferably under control and serves to replenish the water in any suitable water tank or liquid holding vessel and cause an overfiow of the same with the object of keeping this 'liquid holding` vessel as clean as possible. As the area of the discharge chamber 3 is small compared with that of themi-Xing vessel, this outlet causes a rapid action of the air and dust or dirty water as the same passes therethrough, which prevents lodgment of dirt.
In an application filed by me of even date herewith, I have shown and generally described the features of the present application, as I prefer to employ the devices of this application in connection with the apparatus of my copending application.
In the device Vof my improvement and where dirty or soapy water is being collectedV in cleaning, the water discharged from the water holes 8 serves. to dilute this dirty water and at the same time increase thel bulk of the water in the wash box or liquid holding vessel, so as to keep up the fiow in said vessel and the continuous discharge of the dirty water into the sewer.
I claim as my invention:
il. In a .pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus and in combination, a pipe for the dust laden air, a vessel interposed in the line of and connected to adjacent sections a device within and extending across said vessel adaptedY to receive water, having openings connecting the chambers of said vessel at the opposite sides thereof for the passage of the dust laden air and `also provided with openings for delivering the water therefrom to be commingled with and moisten the dust.
2. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus and in combination, a pipe for a vessel interposed in the line of said pipe carried thereby and of appreciably greater diameter than said pipe, a structure within and extending across said vessel that is in part hollow7 and' is provided with peripheral openings between the same and the walls of said vessel for the passage of the dust-laden air and also. provided with openings in the hollow walls thereof adjacent tothe peripheral openings, and means adapted to bring water into the hollow part of said structure under some pressure for its delivery to. be commingled with and moisten the dust of the dust-laden airafter passage through said peripheral opening.
3. In a pneumatic cleaning apparatus and in combination, a central pipe for the dust laden air, a hollow vessel interposed in the length of said pipe, a hollow diaphragm for water within said vessel having openings for discharging and distributing the water therefrom, means for conveying water into said hollow diaphragm and sai diaphragm provided with inclined peripheral grooves for the passage of the dust laden air whereby a circular motion and agitation is imparted to the air and water before passing out from the said hollow vessel.
4. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus, the combination with the pipe for conveying dust laden air or dirty water thereto, of a vessel or chamber composed of twoV Separate connected parts introduced into the line of said pipe, a device inserted within and extending acrossA said vessel, means for introducing water into said device and said device provided with means for. discharging the water therefrom and also means providing for the passage of the dust laden air or dirty water from one side of the said device to the other through said vessel and which latter means are in alinement with the means for discharging the water, whereby an atomizing effect is produced upon the issuing water by which the dust of the dust laden air is moistened by the water in its passage through the vessel.
` 5. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus, the combination with the pipe for conveying dust laden air or dirty water thereto, of a vessel or chamber composed of two separate connected parts introduced into the line of said pipe, a hollow member placed within said vessel and snugly fitting the internal diameter thereof and having a central pipe, a passageway and pipes communicating therewith for supplying water within the said member, discharge passageways for the water from said member and peripheral ports in said member through which the dust laden air or dirty water passes to be commingled with the discharge water from the said member within said vessel.
G. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparat-us, the combination with the pipe for conveying dust laden air or dirty water thereto, of a vessel or chamber composed of two separate connected parts introduced into the line of pipe, a tight fitting hollow member introduced into said vessel or chamber having a pipe for water, means for supplying water to this pipe to be passed into said member, discharge apertures in said member through which the water passes into said vessel, diagonal peripheral grooves in the edges of said tight fitting member through which the dust laden air is rapidly drawn and in its passageway given a rotary motion, the exit openingsA of said grooves being in proximity to the discharge openings for the water, so that the water exit from said member comes below the outlets of said'grooves, whereby the dustof the dust laden air is wet by the discharging water and the force of the inrushing air will act to blow said water into ne streams or a comminuted condition which assists in thoroughly wetting the dust.
7. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus, the combination with the pipe for conveying dust laden air or dirty water thereto, of a vessel or chamber composed of two separate connected parts introduced into the line of said pipe, a tight fitting hollow member introduced into said vessel or chamber having a pipe for water, means for supplying water to this pipe to be passed into said member, discharge apertures in said member through which the water passes into said vessel, diagonal peripheral grooves in the edges of said tight fitting member through which the dust laden air is rapidly drawn and in its passageway given a rotary motion, the exit openings of said grooves being in proximity to the discharge openings for the water, so that the water exit from said member comes below the outlets of said grooves, whereby the dust of the dust laden air is wet by the discharging water and the force of the inrushing air will act to blow said water into fine streams or a comminuted condition, which assists in thoroughly wetting the dust, a narrow central discharge chamber formed in the lower part of said vessel and through which the dirty water or the air and moistened dust must pass.
8. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus, the combination with the pipe through which dirty water or dust laden air passes thereto, of a vessel interposed in said line of pipe and comprising an upper portion and flanged edge, a lower portion and flanged edge connected together, an internal central circular rising flange formed with the lower portion of said vessel, a discharge chamber narrow in diameter in the lower part of said vessel, a longitudinal apertured boss entering the lower discharge chamber, a pipe for entering wat-er alining with the passageway in the said boss, a pipe for discharging water from the passageway in said boss, a hollow member tightly fitting said vessel and perf'crably formed with the latter water pipe for conveying water into said hollow member, discharge passageways from said hollow member for the water, peripheral grooves Jforming passageways for the dirty water or dust laden air from the upper to the lower part of said vessel, the lower parts of which are in proximity to the passageways for the water, whereby the air rushing through comminutes the emerging water into a spray that wets the dust.
9. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus, the combination with the pipe through which dirty water yor dust laden air passes thereto, of' a vessel interposed in said line of pipe and comprising an upper portion and flanged edge, a lower portion and flanged edge connected together, an internal central circular rising flange formed with the lower portion of said vessel, a discharge chamber narrow in diameter in the lower part of said vessel, a longitudinal apertured boss entering the lower discharge chamber, a pipe for entering water alining with the passageway in the said boss, a pipe for discharging water from the passageway in said boss, a disk c having a rising portion through which holes S are formed and spaced apart and a flanged edge 01, said disk being formed integrally with the last aforesaid water pipe, a top plate Z adapted to be secured to said disk so as to form of the disk and the top plate a hollow member snugly fitting within said chamber, diagonal surface grooves 9 in the said flanged edge of the disk, through which the dirty water or dust laden air must pass and by which a rotary motion is imparted to the dust laden air, the lower ends of said diagonal grooves being in proximity to the discharge water openings 8 in the disk whereby the discharged water is comminuted or blown to a spray so as to thoroughly wet the dust of the dust laden air.
10. lIn a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus, the combination with the pipe through which dirty water or dust laden air passes thereto, of a vessel interposed in said line of pipe, a discharge chamber narrow in diameter in the lower part of said vessel, a longitudinal apertured boss entering the lower discharge chamber, a pipe for entering water alining with the passageway in the said boss, a pipe for discharging water from the passageway in said boss, a hollow member tightly fitting said vessel and formed with the latter water pipe for conveying water into said hollow member, discharge passageways from said hollow member for the water, peripheral grooves forming passageways for the dirty water or dust laden air from the upper to the lower part of said vessel, the lower parts of which are in proximity to the passageways for the water, whereby the air rushing through comminutes the emerging water into a spray that wets the dust.
11. In a pneumatic or vacuum cleaning apparatus, the combination with the pipe through which dirty water or dust laden air passes thereto, of a vessel interposed in said line of pipe, a discharge chamber narrow in diameter in the lower part of said vessel, a longitudinal apertured boss entering the lower discharge chamber, a pipe for entering water alining with the passageway in the said boss, a pipe for discharging water from the passageway in said boss, a disk c having a rising portion through which holes 8 are formed and spaced apart and a flanged edge c1, a top plate 0l adapted to be secured to said disk so as to form of the disk and the ISL ends of said diagonal grooves being in proX- imity to the discharge Water openings 8 in the disk whereby the discharged water is comminuted or blown to a spray s0 as to thoroughly wet the dustl of the dust laden aux Signed by me this 6th day of September 1907.
