In the neck 6 are the ports 25'one for each barrel, the same being in communication with the interior of the barrels respectively and with the interior of the plugs 26 whose bodies are screwed to the collars 27 on the neck 6 and in which-are chambers for the inwardly opening ball or other valves 28, the seats of the latter being on the bases of the air inlet ports 29 in said plugs. Said valves 28 when in closed positions are held on their seats by the springs 30 which rest upon the adjacent portions of the necks 6 and bear against said valves 28. In the inner face ofthe side wall of the cam or cam body-"'12"is thespiral groove 3l in which are received portions of the rollers 10 'carried bythe pins 11 on the as has been stated.
The operation is as follows Powter is communicated tothe shaft 15 of the pump in any "suitable manner, thus rotating the cam 12 whereby the rollers 10 which are engaged in the spiral groove 31 pistons -5 and the pins 11 which are attached to the pistons cause the latter to be reciprocated in the barrels. In vone throw'of the pistons which in the present case is to the right,
- open the valves 28 Yandvclose the valves21.
lAir is thus drawn in large volumes into the barrels through'the ports 29` and 25 lfollowing the throw of the pistons. Then the piston returns making the Aopposite throw when the valves 28 are forced on their seats andA open intoy the chamber 18 Vwhen the air is forcibly injected finto :the latter and from thence directed by the nozzles 22 to a place of service, there being a continuous ow of air from the pump with great pressure.
to an operating shaftY similar to ythe shaft-15 in the prior figures, but lthe exterior surface lof the` collarhastherein the spiral grooveB/l ,to receive the vrollers 35 which are Asecured to ythe ends Yofy the pins 11 which are extended inwardly from'the pistons 5, but the operation of the pump in this instance is similar to :that shown and described -in Figures 1-5 inc.; Referring to Figure 7'V on the exterior of the housing 1 is a yseries of ribs 36 radiating from said housing and separated from each other. forming surfaces beyond said housing adapted to cool said housing.
The pumpin either case will 1be found admirably adapted for the purpose of inflating tires and other services in garages to which uses however, I do not limit myself.
It will now be apparent that I have devsed a novel and .useful .enstructor @f air Havingthis described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is y [1Q An air pump comprising in combination, a horizontally arranged housing havinga central cylinder casing, concentrically arranged cylindersy each having a vertically arranged valved inlet and a horizontally arranged valved outlet at Vthe same end' ythereof and Yhaving an elongated, horizon-,
tally disposed slot at the other end, a' pis# ton within each cylinder, a hollow camv operative for rotation around said cylindersl said cam having an interiorly arranged spiral groove cut upon its inner face, means including a horizontally disposed, rotatable shaft passing entirely through said housing for operating said cam, a pin passing through each cylinder and slot, and a roller carried by each pin for engagingy within said kspiral groove forreciprocation of said cylinders.
2. An'air pump comprising in combination, a horizontally arranged housing having a central cylinder casing, concentrically arranged cylinders each having a vertically arranged valved `inlet and a horizontally arranged valved outlet at the same end v thereof, each valved inlet being disposed In Figuresf, 8, 9 and 10 which show an-y at right angles to the horizontal axis of a arranged slot at the other end, a piston with- I in each cylinder, a hollow cam operative for rotation around -said cylinders said cam having an interiorly arranged spiral groove cut upon its inner face, means including a horizontally disposed, rotatable shaft passing entirely through said housing for` operating said cam, a pin passing through each cylinder and slot, and a roller carried by each pin for engaging within said spiral groove for reciprocation of said cylinders. 3. An air pump comprisingv in combination, a horizontally arranged housing having a central cylinder casing, yconcentrically arranged cylinders each having a vertically arranged valved inlet and a horizontally arranged valvedy outlet at the same end thereof and having an elongated horizontally arranged slot at the other end, a piston Within each cylinder, an annular chamber arranged at the discharge end of said housing for direct re- CePtOl Q f air as compressed in @Il Q Sad.
cylinders said chamber having a single vertical outlet, a hollow cani operative for rota-- tion around said cylinders, said cam having an interiorly arranged spiral groove cut upon its inner face, means including a horizontally disposed, rotatable shaft passing entirely through said housing for operating said cani, a pin passing through each cylin der and slot, and a roller carriedkby each pin for engaging Within said spiral groove A for reciprocation of said cylinders.
4. An air pulnp comprising in combination a horizontally arranged housing hav ing` a central cylinder casing, a horizontally arranged shaft passing entirely through. Said housing, concentrically arranged cylinders'each having a valved vertical inlet and a valved horizontal outlet at the saine end thereof and having an elongated slot paral leling said shaft at the other end, a piston Within each cylinder, a hollow cam iixed to said shaft at one end said cani having af cani groove upon its inner face operative for rotation around said cylinders, means including` a roller for cooperatively engaging said carn groove passing through the cylinder slots and connecting with the cam interior for reoiprocation of said cylinders, and an air outlet arranged at the same end of the pump as its intake and paralleling said intake.
