AIR PUMP.
Application filed November 23, 1922. Serial No. 602,704.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known-that I, FREDERICK C. Fnon- LIcH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Air Pump, of which the following 1s a specification. v
My invention relates to an alr pump and consists of barrels, pistons therein, air inlet valves an air outlet valve, and means for operating said pistons by the action of a cam or cam body whereby air in llarge volumes may be drawn into the barrels and in a measure compressed therein and then forcibly discharged therefrom in continuous flow to a place of service.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specilic details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.

Referring to the drawings.
1 designates a housing formed of a casting which is surrounded by the inclosing indicate casing 2, the forward end of which is secured to the flange 3 on the corresponding end of the housing by suitable screws which are passed through said casing into said flange. In said housing are chambers forming a series of longitudinally extendingbarrels 4 which extend in circular form around said housing and receive the pump pistons 5 which are movable in said barrels. Projecting from said flange 3 is the neck 6 which is hollow forming continuations 7 of the chambers of the barrels, the pistons being shorter than the entire lengths of the ling the barrels 4 within the casing 2 is what I termA the rotatable cam 12 which consists of a cup-shaped body having one end closed by the wall 13, and the opposite end open, said wall having thereon the hub 14 which is firmly connected with the shaft 15, the latter passing through the central opening 16 in the housing 1 as its bearings.
On the end of the housing opposite to the casing 2 is the head 17 which is cast with the housing and is hollow forming the air discharging chamber 18, the inner wall 19 of which has therein the series of ports 20 which are in communication with the barrels 4 respectively, the walls of said ports formingseats for the ball or other valves 21 which are adapted to open outwardly into or towards the chamber 18 so that air pumped into the barrels may be discharged therefrom into the chamber 18, the head having connected with it on its exterior the nozzle 22 which is in communication with the chamber 18 and adapted to directl the air to a place of service.
The valves 21 are held to their seats by the engaging coil or other springs 23 which occupy the chamber 18 and are connected with and held in place by the plugs 24 which are screwed to the outer wall of the head 17.
In the neck 6 are the ports 25 one for llO l -tating the cam 12 whereby the rollers 10 `for the inwardly opening ball or other valves 28, the seats of the latter being on the bases of the air inlet ports 29 in said plugs.
Said valves 28 when in closedpositions are held on their seats by the springs 30 which rest upon the adjacent portions of the necks 6 and bear against said valves 28.
In the inner face of the side wall of the cam or cam body 12 is the spiral groove 31 in 'which are received portions of the rollers 1Q` carried by the pins 11 o-n the pistons 5 as has been stated. K
,The operation isas follows:
Power is communicated to the shaft 15 of the pump in any suitable manner, thus rowhich are engaged in the spiral groove l31 and the-pins 11 livhichare attached tothe pistons 5 cause the latter to be reciprocated in the barrels. In one throw of the pistons which in the present case is to theright, open the valves 28 and close the valves 21. Air
is thus drawn in large volumes into the barrels through the ports 29 and25 following the t-hro-w of the pistons. Then the pistonrreturns making the opposite throw when the valves 28 are forced on their seats and so closed to the atmosphere but the valves 21 are forced fromtheir seats and open into the chamber 18 when the air is forcibly injected into the latter and from thence directed by the nozzles 22 to a place of service, there being a continuous flow of air from the pump with greatpressure.l
In Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 which show another 'embodiment 0f my invention, the cam or cam body is of the form of the collar 82 having thereon hubs 33 which are secured to anoperating shaft similar to the shaft 15 in the prior figures, but the exterior surface of the collar has therein the spiral groove 34 to receive the rollers 35 which are secured to the ends of the pins 5 which are extended inwardly from the pistons V11, but the operation of the pump in this instance is similar to that shown and described in Figures 1-5 inc. Referring to Figure 7 on the exterior of the housing 1 is a series of Y ribs 36 radiating from said housing and separated from each other forming surfaces beyond said housing adapted to cool said housing.
The pump in either case will be found admirably adapted for the purpose of inflatin'g tires and otherservices in garages to which uses, however, Ido not limit myself.
` Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
