IMPROVEMENT lN PRINTERS CHASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,434, dated September 29, 1874; application filed May 19,1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that we, OOE FINOH, of Middletown, Orange county and State of New York, and EDWARD L. MEGILL, of Brooklyn, Kings county and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Printers Chases; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved upright chase. Fig. 2 is a modified form of the same, showing the legs and handle arranged to bring the chase diagonally across the bed of the press when secured thereto. This we term a diagonal chase. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the bed of a printing-press most common in use, showing a chase attached with a form secured in it. Fig. 4. is a section on right hand of line w w of Fig. 1.

This invention relates to printers chases; and consists in so constructing them that various sizes and shapes may be produced, and, at the same time, fit into the bed of a printing-press, without the use of an additional or supplemental chase, and thereby allow the printer to secure a small form of type in a single chase, and transmit and secure itin the bed of the printing-press with the same rapidity and convenience as a form occupying the full capacity of the ordinary chase. This does away with both the necessity of overloading the chases with furniture, and that of securing one chase inside another in printing small forms. It also consists in the arrangement of chases in such a manner that, when placed in the bed of the printing-press, they will print a form diagonally across sheets of paper placed on the platen in the usual way, having the lower edges parallel with that of the platen. It consists, also, in an improved means of securing the forms in the chase, whereby much labor and damage are prevented.

A is the bed of a printing-press, having sides B B, lugs O O, and clutch D. E is the chase, projecting from which is legs F F and handle G, having their outer edges beveled to interlock with the lugs O O and clutch D similar to the ordinary chase. The handle G provides an improved means of carrying the chase about with a form in it, or placing it in the bed of the press. Legs F F, at the point of contact with sides B B, are rounded, that the chase may be easily placed in the bed and centered firmly in place. Legs F F may be made double, as in Fig. 2, in case the lugs O O should be nearer together than shown in the drawings, to obtain the strength required. The chase E, Fig. 2, is arranged in connection with the legs F and handle Gr to bring it diagonally across the bed of the press, as above mentioned, which would be placed in the bed of the press the same as the upright chase shown in Fig. 3. Set-screws H, passing through the chase E, extending on the outside, are prevented from interfering with the sides B B by the adaptation of the legs F F and handle G, by which arrangement the screws may be operated by a suitable wrench for tightening the forms in connection with steel braces I.

These chases may be made of any size and shape without altering the principle, and other legs may be added to extend to other parts of the bed, in accordance with the manner in which other presses are made to secure the ordinary chase.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The upright and diagonal chases E, constructed much smaller in body than the bed of the printing-press in which they are used, provided with legs F F and handle Gr, extending to the full size of said bed, and arranged to be secured thereto in the usual manner, substantially as herein described.
