To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAM N. PAsMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Stopper-Chain Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an attachment for stopper chains as usually employed in lavatories, basins, bath tubs, wash tubs and similar devices. In the use of stoppers for closing the opening to the drain or waste pipe of such devices much inconvenience is caused by the stopper, for one reason or another, becoming disconnected from the chain and misplaced so that it is not readily available for use when wanted. I am aware that heretofore it has been suggested to attach the stopper to one end of a chain and to employ a counterweight at the other end oi the chain so that by passing the chain over a suitable roller or similar member the stopper may be readily lowered for use and raised and supported in an elevated position when not in use. Such devices, however, so far as I am. aware, have been more or less complicated and oftentimes more or less inaccessible for repairs inasmuch as in some instances the counterweight has been concealed and access thereto cannot be obtainedv without disconnecting more or less the entire fixture.

The object of my present invention is to overcome these difliculties and to provide an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive stopper chain attachment by which the stopper will always be available for use and may be suspended at any given height from its support when not in use. In car rying out the invention I employ an eye attached in any suitable manner to any fixture with which a stopper may be employed and through which the usual stopper chain is threaded. At one end of the chain I attach the usual stopper and at the other a suitable counterweight. lVit-h these parts of the device I also employ a detachable stop which may be connected to the chain at any suitable point so as to determine the extent to which the chain may be drawn through the eye and consequently the height at which the stopper will be normally maintained in its raised or elevated position, as will be hereinafter more particularly de; scribed? l In the drawing:

Referring to the drawing it will be seen that in carrying out my present invention I employ a chain 10 which may consist of a plurality of links constructed in the manner usually employed for stopper chains for lavatories, basins, tubs and similar fixtures. This chain is passed through an eye 11. The eye 11 is adapted to be supported in any suitable manner to any fixture with which the device may be used. As illustrated the eye 11 is provided with a screw threaded shank 12 but, as will be understood, this is merely illustrative.

At one end of the chain 10 a stopper is suitably attached. As illustrated the stopper 13 is provided with a pin 14 carrying a ring 15 to which this end of the chain is connected. At the opposite end of the chain a suitable counterweight 16 is attached, as for instance by a ring 17. The stopper 13 and the counterweight 16, however, may be connected to their respective ends of the chain by any equivalent means.

Together with the devices hereinbefore described I also employ a stop member indicated at 18. As clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 this stop member preferably comprises 'a plate 19 having a recess 20 therein and inturned

23 and 24 which are spaced and bent or turned over on each other as indicated at 25 and 26 so as to assume positions on the opposite side of the chain substantially parallel to the plate 19. The

21 and 22 From the o eg seven s i w l b apparent that the stop member may be at tached to a chain at any desired position and that the position in which the stop is attached to the chain will determine the extent to which the chain may be pulled through the eye 11 to lower the counter weight and raise the stopper to maintain these parts in initial inactive positions as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

It will be understood that the plate 19 is sufficiently large to make it impossible for the same to pass through the eye 11, and it will now be obvious that all the parts of the stopper chain attachment made in accordance with my invention are exposed, easily operated, and as readily repaired when occasion requires the same.

I claim as my invention; 7

1.-In combination with a chain stopper, counterweight and a stop device through which the chain passes, a stop comprising a member for engaging one portion of the chain and having extensions spaced to span the chain and adapted to engage another portion of the chain and to be secured thereto to determine the extent to which the chain may be moved in the said step device.

Incombination with a chain, stopper, counterweight and eye member through which the chain passes,a stop comprising a plate adapted to engage one side of a chain and having spaced extensions adapted to engage the opposite side of the chain to be secured thereto and to determine the extent to which the chain may be drawn through the said eye. a
