J. H. SAMPLE PENDANT FOR LIGHTING FIXTURES Filed March 20, 1925 ATTORN EYS Patented Mar. 9, 1926.
UNETE 3TATEL JOHN H. SAMPLE, OF MAUMEE, OHIO, ASSIGNOB. TO THE EDTVABD N. RIDDLECOM- rarer PANY, 0F TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
PENDANT FOR LIGHTING FIXTURES.
Application filed March 20, 1925. Serial No. 16,832.
To all whom it may concern: 9
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SAMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maumee, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pendants for Lighting Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices which are used for loops to support a fixture, or for pendants to depend from a fixture. Devices of this kind which are generally employed are usually made with two sides extending from closed ends. The result of this construction is when they are turned edgewise, all sense of beauty is entirely lost.
On the other hand, to make a loop or pendant having more than two sides, if made comparatively open so asto be light as well as ornamental, requires such expen sive core work in the casting thereof as to be prohibitory; and if made solid, they are so heavy that they lose their utility.
My invention has for its object, to provide a construction for a device of this character which can be cast and assembled without a particle of machine work, and yet which will be both useful and-ornamental, and can be made so inexpensively as to en able the trade to use them on medium price fixtures, at the same time retaining the highest type of ornamental construction.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawing, attached hereto and made a part of this specification, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device;
Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views showing the component parts; and
Figs. 4 and 5 are crosssectional views, taken respectively on lines 4:4 and 55 of Fig. 1, to show position of parts when assembled.
Similar reference numerals refer to simi lar parts throughout the entire description. As shown in the drawing, the device consists of a fixed member 10 which is cast with a solid portion at its top 11 and at its bottom 12, each such portion being slightly flattened and grooved on two opposite faces 13 and 1 1. Above the top 11 and integral therewith is a circular portion 15 upon which is cast an upwardly extending loop or hook 16, said .circularportion 15 extending over the two grooved faces 13. Below the bottom portion 12 and {integral therewith isa circular portion 1'7, upon the lower side of which is cast a finial 17 as illustrated (for which may be substituted a second loop or hook, downwardly depending,
if it is desired to utilize the device as a loop instead of a pendant asshown). Cast integral with the member lO'are two curving sides or arms 18, which unite with the top 11 and the bottom 12 on the faces thereof at right angles to the grooved faces 13 and 141, and the extremities of which abut the lower and upper edges respectively of circular portions 15 and 17. At the lower portion of the top 11, between the arms 18, is formed a recess 19 fitted to receive a bar 23, to be described. At the upper portion of the bottom 12, betw'eenthe arms 18, is cast an upwardlyfextending ornamental finial 20..
A' removable member 21 is cast withtwo curvingsides or arms 22 identical in size and contour with the arms 18', which are joined at a point corresponding to the'lower portion of the top 11 of the fixed member 10-by a bar 23 whichis adapted to fit into the recess 19 formed in the top 11. The inner surface of that portion of said arms 22 which extends upwardly from the ends of said bar 23 is slightly rounded to contact with the grooved surface 13, and the upper extremity of each of said arms 22 is adapted to abut the lower edgeof the circular portion 15. The inner surface of the lower portion of said arms 22 is also slightly rounded to contact with the grooved faces 14: on the bottom 12 of the fixed member 10, and the lower endsthereof are adapted to abut the upper edge of the circular portion 17.
My device is easily and quickly assembled without the necessity for any machine work. The lower end of the removable member 21 is passed over one of the arms 18 on the fixed member 10. The upper end of member 21 is pushed upwardly until the bar 23 fits into the recess 19 and the rounded inner surfaces of the upper ends of arms 22 contact with the grooved faces 13. The lower ends of the arms 22 of removable member 21 are then pushed laterally toward the bottom 12 of fixed member 10 until their rounded inner surfaces contact with the grooved faces 14, which completes the operation, and the assembled device is held firmly in place without the use of screws or other mechanical appliances.
Having thus described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A loop formed with an enlarged portion at its top and bottom, flattened faces on said portions diametrically opposite to each other, the sides of said loop abutting the enlarged portions at the edges of said faces; one of said enlarged portions having a recess adjacent the point of union of the sides with said portions, a removable member formed with curving sides corresponding to the sides of said loop, a bar which connects said sides, saidbar being fitted to said recess, the inner surface of the ends of said sides being fitted to the faces on said enlarged portions.
2. A loop formed with an enlarged portion at its top and bottom, flattened faces on said portions, which are slightly grooved, diametrically opposite to each other, the sides of said loop abutting the enlarged portion at the edges of said faces; one of said enlarged. portions having a recess adjacent the point of union of the sides with said portions, a removable member formed with curving sides corresponding to the sides of said loop, a bar which connects saiti sides, said bar being" tted to said recess, the inner surfaceof the ends of said sides being fitted to the faces on said enlarged portions.
3. A loop formed with an enlarged portion at its top and bottom, flattened faces on said portions, there being a vertical groove in each of said faces, the sides of said loop abutting the enlarged portion at the edges of said faces; one of said enlarged portions having a recess adjacent the point of union of the sides with said portions, a removable member formed with curving sides corresponding to the sides ofsaid loop, a bar which connects said sides, said bar being fitted to said recess, the inner surface of the ends of said sides being fitted to the faces on said enlarged portions, an eye at the end of one of said enlarged portions and a finial on the other.
4. A loop formed with an enlarged portion at, its top and bottom, flattened faces thereon diametrically opposite to each other, there being a vertical groove in each of said faces, the sides of said loop abutting the enlarged portion at right angles to said faces; one of saidenlarged portions having a recess adjacent the point of union of the sides with said portions, a. removable member formed with curving sides corresponding to the sides of said loop, a bar which connects said sides, said bar being fitted to said recess, the inner surface of the ends of said sides being fitted to the faces on said on larged portions, and an eye on each of said enlarged portions.
5. A loop formed with an enlarged portion at its top and bottom, said portions having flattened faces diametrically opposite to each other, the sides of said loop abutting the enlarged portion at the edges of said faces; one of said enlarged portions having a recess adjacent the point of union of the sides with said portions, a removable member formed with curving sides, a bar which connects said sides, said bar being fitted to said recess, the inner surface of the ends of said sides being fitted to the faces on said enlarged portions.
