IMPROVEMENT IN BLIND-SLAT FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of letters Patent No. 155,350, dated September 22, 1874; application tiled August 22, 1874.

To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, H. VERHAREN, of Geneseo, in the county of Henry and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Blind- Sla-ts; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the inner side of a blind having attached thereto my improved lock. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front. elevation of said lock detached; and Figs. 3 and 4 are edge elevations of the same, showing, respectively, the positions of parts when arranged to close and to open the slats of a blind.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to enable the pivoted slats of window-blinds to be locked in position when open, partially closed, or closed; and, to this end, it consists in a bar pivoted to or upon the lower end of a blind-Slat rod, arranged to move vertically, and moved to and locked in position by means of an eccentrically-pivoted cam or disk, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A represents a frame, which has, preferably, the form shown, and is provided within its face with a groove, a, that receives and contains abar, B, which bar is capable of heilig moved freely in a longitudinal direction within said groove. Upon the face, at one side of the frame A, is pivoted eccentrically a circular disk or cam, U, which extends over the bar B, and holds the latter in position within its groove. Two lugs, b and b, are placed near the ends of the bar B, and extend forward in such relative positions as to bear against opposite sides of the periphery of the cam C, and prevent the longitudinal movement of said bar, except as said cam is rotated so as to throw it above or below its pivotal bearing, in which event said 'bar will be correspondingly elevated or depressed. An arm, c, secured to and extending radially outward from the pivoted side of the` cam C, enables the latter to be easily rotated, while upon the opposite side of said cam is provided a stop, c', which strikes against t-hc lugs b and b, when the bar B has reached the upper or lower limit of its motion.

The device thus constructed is attached to the inner face of the lower rail D of a blind, immediately below the rod E, which turns the pivoted slats F, and is connected to or with said rod by means of a bar, B', that is pivoted to and extends between. the upper end of the bar B and the lower end of said rod.

When the device is thus constructed and attached, it will be seen that by moving the arm c upward or downward, the cam C will be partially rotated so as to depress or elevate the bar B, and, through its connection B and the rod E, open or close the pivoted slats F.

The motion of the operative parts is positive in either direction. The adjustment is easily effected, while when opened or closed the posit-ions of the slats cannot be changed from without, the attachment operating as a stop or lock for the same. At any point between the two extremes of motion, the cam will offer sufficient resistance to the movement of the sliding bar to prevent the wind from turning the slats.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new In combination with a bar that is pivoted to or upon the lower end of a blind-slat rod, and is arranged to move vertically, an eccentrically-pivoted disk, caused to engage with said rod and impart to the same a positive motion in opposite directions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
