UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY F. BECKMAN, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSGNOR TO DUPLEX PRINTING PRESS COMPANY, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, .A CORPORATION 0F MICHIGAN.
STEREOTYPE-PLATE CASTING BOX.
Application mea october 1o, 1922, serial 110.593,56?. Renewed Jamie, 1925.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BECHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented vcertain new and useful Im rovements in Stereotype-Plate Casting oxes; and l hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had` to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention isV an improvement in stereotype plate-casting boxes of the type shown in my Patent #853,752, of March' 14th,'19o7.
The objects of thepresent invention are to insure plates of uniform thickness; to automatically spread the matrix in the mold previous to the casting operation; to improve the form of the cope so that the in flowing metal itself will also tend to spread the matrix in the mold; and to do away with the necessity of using any tail piece or pouring sheet to direct the metal into the mold.
The present invention embodies novel i1np rovements in the construction of the cope, the drag, and the matrix positioning dcvices, as Aillustrated in the vaccompanying drawings and hereinafter described; and the novel features of construction and novel combinations of parts for which protection is desired are set forth in the claims follow-V ing the description.
In said drawings: Y*
Fig. l is a top plan view of the upper part of the cope and drag of a casting box, closed ready for pouring.
Fig. 2 is a part vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 Fig. l, showing the matrix in place.
Fig. 3 is apart vertical sectional-view on the line 3 3 Fig. l.
Fig. 4- is an enlarged detail sectionl onthe line L -4 Fig. 3.
The cope and drag of the casting box may be constructed and arranged to operate sul stantially as described in my aforesaid patent, but improved as hereinafter pointed out, and therefore it is unnecessary to illustrate the entire casting box in the drawings. Only the upper portions of the cope and drag are shown, as these will sufiice, in connection with the following explanation thereof, to
impart a full understanding of the invention.` 'i
As shown stantially as in my said patent with the exception that its upper portion is slightly contracted in internal diameter, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, about one eighth inch, just labove the upper edge of the matrix when in splashing thereof. This flange does awayl with the loose tail piece (or pouring sheet) which is ordinarily used for this purpose.
As shown, the copel is constructed substantially as described in my aforesaid patent,`but its upper portion 1b (which projects above the matrix M when the box is closed, see Fig. 2)` is slightly contracted in internaly diameter forming ,an outwardly flaring shoulder or ledge la at the lowerend of part 1b, said shoulder approximately coinciding withand lying opposite the shoulder 22t of the drag when the box is closed. As the molten metal descends the space between the cope and drag it strikes the shoulder la and is deflected thereby against the inside sur.-V face of the matrix M and forces the latter outwardly and closely against the inner wall of the drag below the shoulder 2a.. The contracted portion 1"' ofthe cope provides for a greater thickness of the casting at its upper or waste end above the matrixwhich thickened portion forms the head or sprue of the cast plate, which head is removed during the finishing operations on the plate.
l.The upper end of the part 1* of the cope l is also beveled as shown'at 1G, adjacentthe flanges 2"' when the box is closed. The space between the tapered portion 1c and the flange 2b forms a mouth into which the molten stereotype metal can be easily poured to fill the mold in casting a plate.
The matrix M may be of any suitable kind, and is placed in the drag 2 below the .Shoulder i2?, and may be confinedbetween,
the drag 2 is constructed` subing bars hinged to the drag adapted to and cope, and matrix looking bars hinged 10 clamp the edges of the matrix when the boX to the drag, substantially as described. is closed. l0. In a stereotype casting box as set 9. A stereotype casting box comprising a 'forth in claim 9, springs adapted to engage drag, and a cope, the drag being slightly the opposed edges of the matrix and position contracted in internal diameter above the it in the drag, substantially as described. l5 matrix holding portions, and the cope hav- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ing its upper end reduced in diameter opmy own, I aixmy signature.
posite the contracted portions of the drag l HENRY F. BECI-IMAN.
