Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo WILLIAM H. TILLERY, OF ST. HELENA PARISH, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification formingr part of Letters Patent No. 155,271, dated September 22, 1874; application filed July 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TILLERY, of the parish of St. Helena, Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved bale-tie; Fig. 2, a top view of' the recessed band end, and Fig. 3 a side view of the tie.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents theband forbaling cotton or other articles, which is provided at both ends with side recesses a, preferably alternatin g at the sides, so as not to weaken the band ends too much. The recesses a are inclined at one end, and curved in semicircular shape at the other end, in such manner that they form, with the edge of the band, hooks a. The recessed band ends are slipped over each other, and tied by a link-shaped clasp, B, which is carried in lateral position over the band ends, and then diagonally into the connectingrecesses, untiltwocorrespondinghooks, a', catch at each side around the side pins of the clasp, cross over the same, and lock the band firmly thereto.
The tie forms a strong and rigid connection, as if the band ends were connected by two rivets, being only detachable by carrying the band ends toward each other.
The band may also be made of two pieces instead of one, requiring then two clasps for connecting the overlapping ends. This may be very useful for tying the bale on the plantation With a longer and a shorter piece, and using the longer band again after compressing the cotton.
As the band is not bent and doubled, and therefore not injured by use, it may be employed repeatedly for baling, forming a very durable and economical tie thereby.
.I am aware of Patent No. 28,110, havinghooks and inclines in one direction, and only on one side of each end; but
What I claim is The band A, provided With notches on both WILLIAM HENRY TILLERY.
Witnesses:
JOHN B. Won/LACK, SILAs S. NETTLES.
