ToA all whom t may cof/www1 Be it known that I, CmmwitY C. "BUC-K, citizen of the 'United States, residing `at Evanston, in the county of Cooka'nd State Illinois,l vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storage Racks', of'
ivh'ich the yfollowing is fra` specification'.
This invention Yrelates to improvemeiits'inY storage racks and more' partioulalytofracks for storing pianos andthe like. y
v Prior to the present'time it has been a' gneral'practice to store grand pianos-on edge as nearly all Warehouses do ,this in order to utilize tliejls'pace tothe `rbest' ad` vantage. As grand pianos yhave become quite popular in late years, storage Warehouses usually haveas many grand pianos' for storage as they do uprights, and asstor'- ing' the grand pianosonjtheir' sides is'very injurious tothe highly poli iedl surfaces as Well as detrimental to the-interior' of each piaiioifuleft rthat positionlongit is the primary purpose O'this invention tol furnish 'means' 'for storing grand piano bodies' one above the othe'nvvit'h eaoh pianov resting on its own' bottom. Afnotherlobject of the iiiveiition is'to furnish a storage'rackliavii'ig' a number of horizontal shelves onbrac'kets adapted to be :moved outwardly beyond the 'fraiiieof the rack in order 'tojreceive a piano body tijnd tli'en Ato be n'oirepd into the' A'frar'i'fiefor tliepiirp'ose'v of supporting thepia'no? body in Anotherfobject ofthe invention isltol *fur-y nishdetachable adjustable supports or struts which may vbe moved :from one shelfv to the` other for the purpose of supporting the shelf. bracket f vvh'en the bracket vis Imoved outivarjdlyto receive or discharge its load.
further object of the inventionpis tc furnish a C letachable Ibar kadapted vtol accompanying drawings? and more particu lly pointed out rin the appendedolaimsj Referring to thedrayving's j. y Figure 1V is4 a vertical sectional'. vetv of one section of the -r'a'cli'l Y p Fig. 2 is, 'a perspective View of the dei` tachable buffer bar employed vvitli the iii'ovable brackets. v

A bolt 18 also-extends across the yoke 16 and carries a roller 19, which as shown in Figs. 1 and 7, rolls on the horizontal portion of the track. As shown in Figs. 1, vand 7, the pin 17 extends beneath thetrack 12 for the purpose of engaging the lower edge` of. the .track 12 when the bracket 14 is projected forwardly as shown in dotted lines inFig. 1. When the bracket is in this position, it is adapted to receive a piano body, l f
`Eachbracket 14` is provided at its forward end with an angle iron lug 20.- It will be notedzthat thereare twor tracks 12 and two brackets 14.for each shelf andin usethe two brackets 14 of a shelf are to be moved forwardlyat the saine time, and at this-time the buffer barY 21, best shown` in Fig. 2, may be vattached to thetwo brackets. `For this purpose the base 22.0f the buffer is provided near its ends with-sockets 23 adapted to engage the upwardly extending portions of the lugs 20, asshown in Fig. 6. Fromthis figure it will be observed thatthe base 22 of the buffer bar supports padding 24, andr a cover 25. secures this padding yto the base. When two of the brackets. 14 are --in their forwardly projectingvposition asv shown'by dotted: lines in Fig. .1, andthe buffer bar 21 is. attached to the lugs.20 'of these brackets,v
the piano body may be lifted onto the kbrackets and its edge will abut against the buffer bar 21, and thelatter'will vprevent marring ofthe polished surface ofsaid edge.y vItis tolbe noted that the buffer bar is. movable or transferable from shelf to shelf, that is, afteritfhas beenusedwith the brackets :on the :lower .shelf it maybe transferred Yto .the brackets ofthe next shelfabove andso on.
.The apparatus also includes adjustable supportsor struts 26 to bear the vweight of the brackets .14 when said bracketsarein projectedtposition. Each of these strutshas an inverted U-shaped yoke, orY socket27 at its .lower end adapted to detachably engage either of the cross bars 2,.an d. each strut is provided in its -upper end .withai cross'vhead 281to engage the lower. edge of thebracket 14, frAs..shown in Fig..4, vvthere are twoaof thesewstruts, one foreach bracket 14 of a Shelf.-
l .The blocks 10, and 1.11 function l as 1 abutment members n for the bolt 17 .Y vwhena bracket 14 is :moved either forwardly or rearward.
In-use, when it :is desired to store piano b.odies,-' `the flower. 'brackets14t may ..be slid forwardly rand the .buffer..bar 21 attached tothe lugs-20 offthese brackets. l:Then the `piano body. may beplacedfonfthe two brack-V Vets and` thenfthe. brackets-,may` be sl-id'into the=.frame until. the yokes labut against the lower blocks 11. Then the buffer bar 21 may be removed and attached to the lugs 2O of the brackets 14 immediately above, and if bars 2a and 3a to posts,.but these posts are not shown inthe drawings. :In orderl to make the device ofportable or knock-down construction, the various fastening means are preferably bolts and nuts. f
From the foregoing it is believed thatkthe construction, operation andV advantages may be readily understood byV those skilled in the art and it is apparent that various changes may be made without..departingfrom the spirit of the invention asv expressed in the claims. What is claimed. and desired to be by Letters Patentis: ,LA rack y'ncluding a plurality of substantially Yhorizontally disposed stationary rails, a bracketl bar slidably. mounted on each of said rails,.and.meansconnecting secured eachl of said rails .and its associated ,bracket bar to permit the bar to ,automaticallyswing downwardly relatively to one .end of the rail without detaching .the bar.. from ,tlie`;rail, when the vbar is moved forwardly relatively to the rail.` 1
