9 Claims. (Cl. 280-49) 1 V This invention relates to, improvements in store carriages of the type used for supporting baskets for the accumulation of merchandise by a customer.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a store carriage of the type inquestion in which a rigid carriage frame is provided, the frame including a commodity supporting platform and a-basket supporting and attaching means, whereby the same carriage maybe utilized for different types of baskets, whichbaskets can be removed and/or replaced which will enable a:proprietor to utilize different designs, types, and sizes of baskets without the expense of replacing the main carriage assembly. 7
l Vfore specifically the invention comprehends the use of a tubular frame, the tubular frame embodying side uprights and a forwardly projecting platform supporting structure, the uprights and the platform being mounted on wheel supports, and theuprights including cantilever arms which project from the upper extremities of the side frames and are provided with fastening means for "securing suitable commodity carrying baskts.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of that portion ofthe invention including the fastener for securing the basket at the top of the side frameff The'main frame' of the carriage is shown as formed primarily of tubing and includes two side frame assemblieseach formed of rear uprights I and front uprights 2, the rear uprights having the wheel bearing "parts'3 at their bottom portionsand associated'wheels 4. The front uprights 2 of each side frame are positioned. forwardly and slightly above the rear uprights 2, so that their extremities terminate above the bottom and top of the rear uprights I. The frame tubings l and 2 are plugged at their front ends as at 2 to provide a filler, with their rearwardly inclined faces lying in a common plane which forms a support for the basket as hereinafter described. The bottom of the carriage frame is formed primarily by the U-shaped horizontal vertically spaced members 5 and 6, these members projecting substantially forward and supporting at their front ends posts I and 8, these posts I and 8 extending vertically and being connected at their lower ends with the swivels 9 mounting the front casters It. The upper ends of the posts extend slightly above the upper U- shaped frame member 5 and are drilled horizontally to receive the forward portions of the legs of the U-shaped members 5 and 6 to secure, position, and properly support the latter as shown. The uprights l and 2 are similarly drilled to form transverse openings for the reception of the outer ends of the arms of the U- shaped frame members 5 and 6, the extremities of which receive plugs m, which plugs primarily function to provide a finished structure.
The rear frame members are laterally spaced by a tubular connecting member II, this tubular connecting member forming a support for the outer wicket [2, the inner wicket l4, and a medial rod I6 of the platform assembly. These wickets and rod lie in an angular plane which terminates below the front portion of the upper U-shaped member 5. The inner wicket I4 has its forward ends projecting upwardly into projecting inverted V-structures as shown at [5, which will form stops to prevent forward movement of commodities which might rest upon the platform, as best shown in Fig. 1. This wicket assembly including the parts l2l4l6 is secured by welding or otherwise to the transverse supporting wire 32 which lies above the transverse connecting tubular bar 3| and facilitates in the bracing of the assembly. It will be noted that the platform as shown may be modified and lie in a plane lower than indicated, it being obvious to one skilled in the art that the lower the plane of the platform, the more complete the telescoping of the tapered side members 5 and 6 when the carriages are in stacked association. It will be noted that all horizontal parts of the frame medially intersect the vertical parts, the vertical parts being formed with bores for receiving and forming suitable connections at all points of intersection, which points may be further secured by suitable welding operations.
As heretofore stated the filler blocks or plugs 2 at the upper ends of the tubular side frame members I and 2 are formed at their upper faces with rearwardly inclined surfaces which lie in a common plane and upon which rests the horizontal flanges 19 of the cantilever supporting members. The supporting members are of angular form and include the horizontal portions 19 and the vertical outer portions 18, the latter terminating in rearwardly and downwardly projecting hooks 20 and extending forwardly and being drilled to receive the clamping plates 2!. The clamping plates 2| are of angular form with their upper portions flanged inwardly as at 22 to overlie and secure portions of a basket assembly as best shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The clamping plates are secured in place by screws 23 which may have associated nuts in the conventional manner. In Fig. 4 a wire basket is illustrated as including horizontal side stays 24, which normally lie immediately above and in a plane with the upper edge of the upright angle portions 18 of the supporting member, this arrangement permitting the flange 22 of the clamp 2| to overlie the side stay 24 and to clamp and retain the same in proper association with the support. The bottom of the basket structure is indicated at 25 and will normally lie on the horizontal portion IQ of each of the side supports. Baskets of the type in question likewise include the end angular U-frame member 21, this frame member 2! being formed with a bottom connecting rod or portion indicated by reference character 2'! in Fig. l and 1 is engaged beneath the hook 20 provided at the rear of the upright angular portion I8 of each of the supports. Obviously by this structure a basket of the type shown in Fig. 4 will first have its transverse connecting member 27 engaged under the hook 20 and will then be swung down to rest on the cantilever supporting member and along the upper surface of the horizontal portion thereof indicated by reference character [9. In this position the frame or stay member 24 of the basket will overlie the upper margin of the vertical angle portion 18 of the supports and can be clamped by the angular clamps 2| as clearly shown. This structure permits the interchange of the basket from the carrier, the substitution or replacement of a different basket, and facilitates the shipment of the baskets and frames, which if not in relative unmounted condition would occupy considerable shipping space in proportion to the weight involved and require special packing and shipping facilities. The horizontal flanges [9 of the angle supports are drilled to receive connecting bolts 34 which extend downwardly into the filler block or plug 2 of the uprights I and 2 of the side frame members.
It will be noted that the bottom frame is tapered forwardly to provide for nesting and in association with this provision the arrangement of the basket cantilever supports 18 and I 9 at a forwardly, upwardly inclined angle as provided for inherently comprehends the arrangement of the basket which preferably is of tapered form at an angle from the horizontal, whereby these baskets may be telescoped as is conventional in the art, and as shown in my copending application Serial No. 99,847, filed June 1'7, 1949. In order to more fully understand the basket structure, it will be noted that in Fig. 4 the basket is formed of U-shaped spaced wires 26 which are connected by the horizontal stays 24 and the bottom stays 25. The rear end of the basket is formed of side frame members 21 which are connected at their bottoms and tops and from which extend the horizontal U-shaped side braces 30. Angular reinforcing stays 2B and 29 are provided at the side of the basket and merge with the rear frame members 21, as shown in my prior application.
What I claim is: i
1. In a store service carrier, side frame structures, each consisting of spaced uprights of forwardly increasing elevation, a U-shaped frame having arms and formed with its closed end forward of the uprights, said frame arms diverging rearwardly with its free end portions intersecting said uprights and being fixed at the points of intersection, spaced posts carried at the front end of said frame, casters supported at the lower ends of the posts, rollers carried at the lower ends of said side frames, transverse bars arranged between and connecting said posts and said uprights, and a platform fixed to the transverse bar between said uprights and resting upon the transverse bar between said posts.
2. In a store service carriage, a forwardly converging horizontal frame formed of a pair of spaced superimposed U-shaped tubular members, tubular uprights forming side frames fixed to the free ends of said U-shaped frame members, rollers carried by the lower ends of said uprights, a frame supporting the forward end of the U- shaped frame, including vertical post members having swivels at their lower ends, said post members being drilled medially to receive said frame members, and cantilever supports rigidly secured to the upper ends of said side frame posts, said cantilevers having free end portions extending forwardly and upwardly in a common plane including means for detachably connecting a receptacle thereto.
3. The substance of claim- 2 characterized in that the side frame members are connected by a transverse spacer, and a platform is supported at its rear end by said transverse member and extends forwardly in an inclined direction between said posts.

shaped frame, including vertical post members having swivels at their lower ends, said post members being drilled medially to receive said frame members, and cantilever supports at the upper end of said side frame posts, said cantilevers being formed of inwardly facing angles, the upright walls of which terminate at their rear ends in downwardly facing hooks, and a clamp at the front end portion of each of said cantilevers.
5. The substance of claim 4 characterized in that an inclined platform is supported between the U-shaped frame members.
6. The substance of claim 4 characterized in that an inclined platform is supportedbetween the U-shaped frame members, and includes a plurality of wickets welded to horizontal cross bars.
'7. The substance of claim 4 characterized in that an inclined platform is supported between the U-shaped frame members, and includes a plurality of wickets, one of the wickets-being formed at its closed end with a series of upwardly projecting loops providing stops for the platform.
8. In a store carrier, side frame structures, each of said side frame structures consisting of spaced uprights of forwardly increasing elevation, a forwardly converging horizontal frame formed of superimposed U-shaped tubular members, a truck frame supporting the forward end of said forwardly converging frame structure, said truck frame including vertical posts having swivels at their lower ends and a connecting brace, said posts being drilled medially to receive said frame members, cantilever supports carried at the upper ends of said side frames, said cantilever supports extending forwardly at an angle corresponding to the relative elevation of the spaced uprights, and means for securing a receptacle to said cantilevers.
9. The substance of claim 8 characterized in that the cantilevers are formed of inwardly facing angle members, the upright walls of which are,
formed with hooks at their rear end portions, and clamps at the forward end portions of said cantilevers.
