10 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in road machines.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved road machine frame having a longitudinal connecting member of the tubular type fabricated with a rear end section particularly lending itself to attachment to the rear platform and running gear.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rear end connecting section of spread formation arranged to be attached to a tubular overhead reach member, arranged to straddle a motor or other mechanism which may be used, as well as imparting greater rigidity and better bracing to the rear end of the machine.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a road machine frame constructed in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same, a portion of the reach member being omitted,
Figure 3 is a detail of the rear end section,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the joint between the reach and the rear end section, and
Figure 5 is a rear elevation of the machine.
In the drawings the numeral ill designates a tubular reach member. This member is shown in the form of a pipe or tube, but it is to be understood that it need not be round or imperforate. So long as the reach member is tubular so as to give sufficient strength and is of restricted size so as to permit unobstructed vision on each side, the purposes of the invention will be served. Such a member is set forth in my Letters Patent No. 1,812,342 issued June 30, 1931.
The reach member may include a substantially horizontal section A and a downwardly and forwardly inclined section B bent therefrom. The front section B is supported on the front running gear H in any suitable manner as is now common in this art. A sub-frame I2 has its forward end pivoted to the running gear ll, while its rear end is suspended by a hanger l3, as is the common practice. A scraper blade I4 is carried by the sub-frame.
The principal feature of the invention resides in a rear end section or yoke. This section includes a tubular adapter it having a reduced shank ll telescoping the rear end of the section A of the reach member; and a pair of divergent fiat wings l8. This adapter is struck on about a thirty degree angle which is subject to varialion. Channel members or legs l9 are suitably secured at their upper ends to the wings and diverge downwardly. The adapter is preferably welded to the reach member and the wings may be bolted or riveted to the legs.
The legs i9 being spread are inclined and have their lower ends cut horizontally so as to rest on a transverse platform 2%. The legs are welded otherwise fastened to said platform. In order to lend rigidity a cross bar 2i is fastened between the upper portions of the legs [9 and to facilitate this the channels are turned outwardly.
The platform is fastened by welding or bolting on angle bars 22 which extend rearwardly and support a rear axle 23 supported in rear wheels Z l. It will be seen that the legs are spread sufficiently to brace and stiffen the rear end of the frame or to permit a motor to be hung therebetween. Also the platform is left free between the legs and this gives ample foot room.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A road machine frame including, an elongated tubular reach member, and a rearwardly and downwardly spread rear end section having a supporting adapter at its forward end, said adapter provided with a forward shank extension telescopically and rigidly secured to said tubular reach member.
2. A road machine frame including, an elongated tubular reach member, a rearwardly and downwardly spread rear end section having a supporting adapter at its forward end, said adapter provided with a forward shank extension telescopically and rigidly secured to said tubular reach member, a platform to which the lower end of the spread rear end section is secured, and a transverse brace member extending between and secured at its ends to the rearwardly and downwardly spread upper portions of said end section.
3. A road machine frame including, an elongated tubular reach member, and an upwardly and forwardly inclined yoke having a forward shank extension telescopically and rigidly secured to said reach member.
4. A road machine frame including, an elongated tubular reach member, an upwardly and forwardly inclined yoke having a forward shank extension secured telescopically and rigidly to let) said reach member, and a platform secured to the lower ends of the yoke.
5. A road machine frame including, a tubular reach member having a horizontal rear portion and a forwardly and downwardly inclined forward portion, an adapter section having a horizontal forward shank extension telescopically and rigidly attached to the rear portion of said reach member and a pair of rearwardly and downwardly divergent rectangular extensions, and a pair of correspondingly inclined leg members of channel section rigidly attached at their upper ends to said rectangular extensions of said adapter section.
6. A road machine frame including, a tubular reach member having a horizontal rear portion and a forwardly and downwardly inclined forward portion, an adapter section having a horizontal forward shank extension telescopically and rigidly attached to the rear portion of said reach member and a pair of rearwardly and downwardly divergent rectangular extensions, a pair of correspondingly inclined leg members of channel section rigidly attached at their upper ends to said rectangular extensions of said adapter section, and a platform secured to the lower ends of said leg members.
'7. A road machine frame including, a tubular reach member, an adapter having a shank extension at its forward end rigidly fastened telescopically to the rear end of the reach member and provided with rearwardly and downwardly divergent portions, downwardly inclined and divergent leg members secured at their upper ends to the divergent portions of the adapter, and a platform secured to the lower ends of said leg members.
8. A road machine frame including, a tubular reach member, an adapter having its forward end rigidly fastened to the rear end of the reach member and provided with rearwardly and downwardly divergent portions, correspondingly inclined legs secured at their upper ends to the divergent portions of the adapter, and a platform secured to the lower ends of the legs.
9. A road machine frame including, a tubular reach member, an adapter having its forward end rigidly fastened to the rear end of the reach member and provided with rearwardly and downwardly divergent portions, correspondingly inclined legs secured at their upper ends to the divergent portions of the adapter, a platform secured to the lower ends of the legs, and a rear axle having its end portions mounted in ground wheels and its middle portion supporting the platform.
10. A road machine frame including, a rigid pipe-like member having a horizontal rear portion and a downwardly inclined forward portion, upwardly and forwardly convergent rear legs, and an adapter having a forward shank extension rigidly connecting the upper ends of the legs with the rear end of the horizontal portion of the reach member.
